there are a few very narrow cone attacks that could be classified as column. i have no idea how the collision detection is treated in any case. For what purpose do you make this suggestion?

Column, or rectangular AoEs are good for when you want an ability to have a consistent coverage from source to end.

Imagine something like a wave or beam of energy 5m wide traveling down a corridor. The distance from the source doesn't matter, so long as the target is visually within it, it will count as a hit, unlike cones which require backpedaling to get targets into the wide end of it.

  2. I've been wondering if it's possible to have an AoE type that behaves as a rectangle, with range and width being the two parameters.

Powers with especially narrow cones would be good candidates for such an AoE type, as cones even in the 45* range (for melee at least) have this tendency to entirely miss all but your selected target without carefully finessing your position and choice of target.

Narrow ranged attacks, like the 5-15 degree cones, will miss targets directly infront of you, even though everything visually lines up.

Cone attacks bring up questions as to what counts as being inside the cone. It's certainly not a bounding box around a character, perhaps it's a pinpoint coordinate somewhere between their feet and their head? Floating in the air somewhere in front of them? Swiveling straight out of your AoE coverage by merely rotating in place?

  3. Maybe the beanbag could be an armor piercing rocket?

Still does the mag 3 stun to one target, but with an added S/L -Res in an AoE?

That should help mitigate the issue of S/L being so heavily resisted everywhere, and lean a little more into the AoE of the set, would help FA anyhow.

I wonder, is it possible for an AoE ability to have mixed effects like that? The single target stun, AoE -res, and making that debuff only effective on targets with S/L above 0%?

My recommendation is worry less about what others tell you about the set and just dig in and give it a try. You may be surprised. It basically boils down to your playstyle, but you need to decide for yourself how Assault Rifle is as a set rather than run off what you are being told. I find the set rather fun and effective. I have an AR/Devices Blaster that is both fun and effective. May not do as much damage as some of my other characters, but it can be rather hard to keep up with Fire Blast or a tricked out for damage Energy Blast set.

I normally just play what sounds fun, and then find out later that it's bad, which is pretty discouraging if you're planning on spending time on kitting out something.

I'm using AR/Dev as well, but doing so in a bit of a vacuum as I haven't tried all of the combinations, or those considered meta.

  5. As much as I like the theme of this power set, if you ask anyone that has a deep understanding of the game, they'll invariably tell you it's bad.

From what I've gathered, these are some of the issues:

    - Sniper Rifle doesn't have a shorter cast time while in Quick Form, but it has a 1 second faster cast time compared to other snipes while out of combat, so it's a lower DPA snipe compared to other sets once combat is underway, just gets the initial shot off faster, but interrupt time is still 2 seconds.

    - Ignite has a very small radius (4 ft) and a very strong fear effect, making it far less effective than it theoretically could be.

    - The set is lacking on debuffs, with only a -DEF on your weakest attack. (I mean, still better than Archery and Energy Blast...?)

    - 4 abilities have random chance KB, which is a bit of a toss up on if that's good or bad, since you get Force Feedback procs as an option, but face the KB2KD tax if you don't want things randomly flinging around... such as out of your Full Auto cone coverage or aforementioned very tiny Ignite AoE.

I don't really have the experience to make good suggestions, which is why I want to hear from you guys why it's considered such a bad set, but I have a few ideas to throw in while we're kicking the discussion off here:

Beanbag is a good ST stun, but it stands in place of Aim, which is able to significantly buff the damage and to-hit of your big AoE attacks. Maybe this could be upgraded to a Flash Bang grenade? 100% chance of mag 3 stun to your target, but a 40% chance to all others in a 15ft radius?

Since Sniper Rifle has a longer cast time while in Quick Form, maybe it could have a higher damage output or -Res to compensate for this?

Ignite having a 10ft radius and a slow debuff would help that power be more than something you splash in a doorway and weep as Minions and AVs alike run through it like it's nothing, taking 3 ticks of damage at the most. That power really leans on you or someone else having immobilizes or holds. Maybe just making contact with the puddle starts a DoT that lingers even if the targets run out of it or straight through it?

I dunno, curious to hear your thoughts. When people say a set is "bad", are we talking differences of 10%, or massive night and day issues?

  6. I thought it would be hilarious if targets under the influence of certain mez effects could be forced to say things or perform animations via commands.

Might be abusable, not sure, but I'm absolutely certain that control-heavy ATs will have a field day with it.

Would include variations for all affected, target selected, and accept <em emotes>

This idea brought to you by the brilliant minds of the Excelsior General Chat gang, please don't kill me.

  7. This requires 3 text files, but it allows you to treat your forms as toggles.

You can change Q and E to whatever you desire your controls to be.

C:\binds\ can be changed to anywhere you like.

    PeaceBringer.txt

    Q "goto_tray 8$$powexec_name "Bright Nova"$$bindloadfilesilent C:\binds\PeaceBringerB.txt"
    E "goto_tray 9$$powexec_name "White Dwarf"$$bindloadfilesilent C:\binds\PeaceBringerW.txt"

    PeaceBringerB.txt

    Q "goto_tray 1$$powexec_toggleoff "Bright Nova"$$bindloadfilesilent C:\binds\PeaceBringer.txt"
    E "goto_tray 9$$powexec_name "White Dwarf"$$bindloadfilesilent C:\binds\PeaceBringerW.txt"

    PeaceBringerW.txt

    Q "goto_tray 8$$powexec_name "Bright Nova"$$bindloadfilesilent C:\binds\PeaceBringerB.txt"
    E "goto_tray 1$$powexec_toggleoff "White Dwarf"$$bindloadfilesilent C:\binds\PeaceBringer.txt"

    In game:

    /bindloadfile C:\binds\PeaceBringer.txt

Be careful not to toggle faster than it takes for your powers to "light up" after the tray switches and your transformation completes (About 0.5 seconds) or your trays and power will be out of sync. It will correct itself if you enter a different form or press the same key you spammed 2 more times.

This macro will let you switch into and out of a form, or one form to another, and only needs two keys to do it.

  8. What if the Domination bar was changed to be a resource?

The ability would be a toggle that consumes the resource at a certain rate, and being proactive extends the uptime of it.

The ability itself wouldn't have much of a cooldown at all, it would just be locked out until 90-100%

So you could turn it off at 50% if you're not using it, and get back up to 100% far more quickly

The Domination paradigm shift that happens over a 1% change in recharge rate to completely bypass the crash just doesn't sit right with me at all.

  9. Wait, I got it!

What if Repair was replaced with something akin to the Kheldian transforms?

    - It places you into the cockpit of a big stompy war-mech with its own set of powers

    - Your normal powers are locked out for the duration that you're in the form

    - Once disabled, it has a somewhat lengthy recharge time

This disables your ability to call in reinforcements, prevents use of your support abilities, and cancels certain toggle abilities

But you get to be a watered down Sentinel for a bit 😋

  10. I think I like the idea of a Gang War equivalent.

Imagine a ground-targeted ability that calls in a transport ship that flies in and drops off 6 robots and 1 large stationary turret/artillery piece with something like a gatling laser or photon barrage

  11. This reminds me a lot of the Brewmaster on WoW. Instead of taking instant damage, it's converted into a DoT, with a meter for how much is in queue, and that meter can be reduced with other abilities.

It's not really an absorb, more of a damage smoothing. You're going to take the same damage in the end, but something that would kill you instantly can be mitigated by healing during the time your health is plummeting

  12. It's bad, very skippable, and I'm sure most players will agree you're better off taking something else.

I've bounced around a lot of ideas to make it a more compelling choice, but I keep hearing something about this "cottage rule" whatever that is. 😋

-Low cooldown, but it shuts the bot down to fold up into a "maintenance mode" where they heal over time and have a high +Res +Def for the duration

-Changing it to summon a specialized repair bot of some type (this also opens up the possibility to use it as a mule for pet auras or something)

-Recycle. Dismiss the bot (perhaps explosively) for components, shortening the time to summon reinforcements

-Absorption added to it, to prime the target for a nuke you know is going to wipe it out otherwise

-Resurrects the targeted bot to full health and endurance

Maybe you guys have some ideas? But we can all at least agree it's bad in the current state, right?

  13. I don't really blame anyone for hating this suggestion, but here we go.

First, just get rid of all the scrambled set bonuses. It's a complete mess of predominantly survival-focused buffs that have absolutely nothing to do with the enhancement name or role.

Sets will have "milestone" bonuses, you can't just throw in one and get the good shit. Sets could have anywhere from 1 to 6 milestones. Some milestones could be so good that you want to dedicate an entire set to get it. This means that a great deal of enhancements that provide some global attribute and nothing else would go away, and instead would enhance an attribute as well as have a set effect for having 1 slotted.

For the most part, these set bonuses apply only to the power you slot them in, but they enhance things that normally cannot be enhanced.

    We're talking things like...

    - Increase the magnitude of stuns, holds, mezs (so a weak one can affect larger targets like Lt's and Bosses, for example.)

    - Increase (Or decrease/nullify?) the chance of procs that are not 100% (For example, an attack with a 50% chance for KB could be slotted to do so at 100%, or 0% so it never happens.)

    - Grant a single target ability some measure of AoE. (Like 20% of damage is applied to enemies within 10ft.)

    - Convert some portion of damage into a different typed damage.

    - Apply a bonus enhancement that goes beyond ED limits.

    - Speed up animations so you cast more quickly.

Durability (Resist), Evasion (Defense), Fortitude (Status Duration Resist), Willpower (Magnitude Status Resist) would be inherent and slottable powers.

Strength (Global Damage), Precision (Global Accuracy), and Haste (Global Recharge) could also be inherent powers, but this would need to be balanced carefully.

These powers would start at 0% across the board, and can be slotted with special enhancements that increase effectiveness against various types of damage.

You could generalize or specialize into resisting various damage and status types.

Bear in mind that you enhance these at the price of dedicating slots to them.

Again, these need to be balanced carefully so that choosing what type of things you resist and how much are a compelling decision.

TL;DR - Set bonuses are different and apply to what you slot them in. Survival bonuses are now done directly through the relevant inherent powers.

All parts of this are up for discussion, and hopefully might lead to an even better idea by someone else

  14. It is kind of overpowered that a single pool power can be equivalent to 9 luck of the gamblers +global recharge

The fact that builds require this to "perma" something is indicative of a larger problem.

Some games don't even start the cooldown on abilities until they finish their thing, so hastens cooldown wouldn't even begin until its 2 minute duration is up under that system.

I'm just a newcomer, so trying to take toys away from the veterans for reasons of balance probably isn't going to end well, so I just accept it and suggest QoL and power creep instead 😛

  15. AE farming on typical ATs is boring (Though I had some fun with a fire farmer), but it's like 20x faster and easier to power level a toon off of level 1 elite bosses than to try and do normal missions solo.

On one hand I enjoy having the option to power level, but on the flipside I hate how comparatively unrewarding the rest of the game is because of it.

Trash random drops, bad exp/inf, traveling long distances, and cranking up the difficulty to the maximum that you can barely deal with yet still getting next to nothing for it... all sucks.

Getting together with a mission team can be decent, and is certainly a lot more fun, but I haven't seen an LFG mission ad in hours that I even marginally qualify for.

DFB DFB DFB DFB, then what? You got your 4 basic offensive abilities and your best option is to farm AE Elites the rest of the way. If you want to do the stories, you can just use an oro crystal later.

My first character was an MM that I leveled 'normally' through story arcs and contacts, and it took me nearly 2 months to reach 50.

Then, I made a fire farmer and reached 50 in one day.

After seeing the sheer efficiency of AE farming first hand, it's really hard to go back.
