Well, it sort of says what it is.

After I read what the others had said, I tracked this down on the wiki

    "Defense Tags and Stacking

Defense bonuses carry tags as well, to specify what styles of attack they work against. Each Defense bonus applies only versus attacks whose tags match one or more of its own. There is one additional type of Defense bonus called Base Defense, or DEF(Defense), which applies against all attacks regardless of tagging.

Every time an attack is made against a target, the game checks the target's total Defense bonus against each of the attack's tags separately. Once the game has those separate totals, it uses only the best one in its calculations that determine whether the attack hits. The important result of this rule is that, for any given attack, Defense buffs only stack when they all have one of that attack's tags in common. However, for attacks that have multiple damage types (e.g., Cold and Smashing), only the defense for the damage type which makes up the majority of the power's damage used in the calculations.

Example: Deflection Shield gives a Defense bonus against Melee Attacks, Smashing Attacks, and Lethal Attacks. Glacial Armor gives a Defense bonus against Energy Attacks and Negative Energy Attacks. A Tanker with both these buffs is ambushed by a nasty Council Vampyri who tries to hit her with Siphon Life. That power is tagged as a Negative Energy Attack and a Melee Attack. Our Tanker will only be protected by one of her two Defense buffs. Lucky for her, it will be whichever is larger." - https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Defense

Can Phase Shift be used as a get-out-of-jail free card?

Phase shift is better used in advance.

Can you be mezzed and use it or be used after you run in and nuke a mob?

I can't remember if it has interrupt time or not at this point (it has been nerfed a couple of times), but you can't use it when you are mezed.

I alway carry one column of resist effects insps on squishies.

I'm thinking if you are able to nuke everyone in a mob, you will probably have enough time to get into phase shift if you click it immediately.

That being said, I've never tried it.

    2 hours ago, WuTang said:

Does it take you out of combat?

Other characters the are phase shifted can attack you. (at least as far as I know, but it has never happened to me)

You are invulnerable to attacks from non-phase shifted characters.

I only ever used phase shift on a katana/super reflexes scrapper that I had before the sunset.

When I used phase shift, I used it along with invisibility (which is no longer part of the concealment pool) to stealth to the end of missions.

Back then, phase shift lasted much longer as well.

I don't have an characters on Homecoming with Phase Shift yet.

"Although this power is a toggle, you cannot remain Phase Shifted for more than 30 seconds, even if you still have Endurance." - https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Concealment#Phase_Shift

Enough time to get away, but not enough time to stealth with it to the end of a mission in one shot.

Can someone also explain Melee and Range Def, please? I understand how Def and Res work, but with Melee and Ranged, if I'm being targeted with a ranged Fire attack does both my range and fire def come into play, same for Melee?

Well, it sort of says what it is.

Melee defense only defends against melee attacks (oddly enough, some attacks that seem to be melee are actually ranged attacks)

Ranged defense only defends against ranged attacks.

FX based defenses say to Fire, energy, etc. Only defend against that damage type (not regulated by being ranged or melee).

If an attack is a ranged fire attack, both ranged defense and defense vs fire would stack.

    Same for melee.

You can get defense vs AoEs as well. I'm unsure if that stacks with ranged and melee, but it would stack with say defense vs fire.

But still how can I get the status protections up?

    https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Defiant_Barrage:_Recharge/Chance_for_%2BStatus_Protection (Unique)

This enhancement adds a chance to boost your status protection against hold, disorient, sleep, immobilize, confuse, and fear effects for a short time. This effect will trigger approximately 3 times per minute. Its minimum proc chance is 9.5%, and its maximum is 90%.

    https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Winter's_Gift (unique)

Two enhancements increases Fire and Cold Resistance by 3.75%.

Two enhancements reduces the duration of Immobilize effects on you by 6.25%.

Two enhancements reduces the duration of Hold effects on you by 6.25%.

Two enhancements reduces the duration of Stun effects on you by 6.25%.

Two enhancements reduces the duration of Sleep effects on you by 6.25%.

Two enhancements reduces the duration of Fear effects on you by 6.25%.

Two enhancements reduces the duration of Confuse effects on you by 6.25%.

    https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Impervious_Skin:_Status_Resistance/Regeneration (not unique)

This enhancement grants a global 7.5% reduction in status effect duration, which may be stacked up to five times to provide a maximum reduction of 37.5%.

This enhancement grants a 25% regeneration rate bonus for 120 seconds. When used in a click power, the effect is granted every time the power is used. When used in a toggle power, the effect persists until 120 seconds after the toggle power is deactivated. When used in an auto power, the effect is always active. This regeneration rate bonus is unique and non-stacking.

    https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Leaping#Acrobatics

While this power is active, you are very nimble and Acrobatic. You can avoid most Knockback effects and are resistant to Hold effects. You must be at least level 14 and have two other Leaping Powers before selecting Acrobatics.

    adapt a classic arc

Is the way that I would always go.

Just remember, whatever they do, they're likely to mess it up.  😛

... because "they" always think that what made the comics popular isn't as important as "modernizing" and "selling" the movie to a general audience.

I would seriously like to see a classic comic movie done with everything from a series of comics done as it was done in the comics.

Keep all the scripting and action from the comic ... and, then ... add in extra embellishment and dialog.

In general, I have this feeling about retcons as well. The original were popular because the readers enjoyed them.

Back when I was actively seeking out comics in the early days (early for me at least) -either on the "Hey, Kids! Comics!" or in a comic book store -, there wasn't polybagging, hologram cards, multiple covers, restarts to sell issue #1's, etc. Comics sold because people were interested in the story, characters, and/or the cover looked cool.

    768e3493096a517f7f8837de287343ee.jpg

To me, there seems to be far too much "adulting" of superheroes in movies ... and, it appears, in comic books in general these days (if not, simply deconstruction which to me is a juvenile attempt at "adulting" superheroes. It is always easier "to tear something down" than it is to "build something up")

The flashy colors in comics were to promote sales which were targeted at adolescents and not adults.

X-men under Chris Clairmont was highly targeted toward pointing out the prejudice of people toward those that are "different", how those that are "different" deal with that prejudice, and how that prejudice against those that are "different" is a villain that has to be confronted.

[Coming back to insert this: In effect, how as a "nerdy" kid that reads comics am I to deal with the dressers, jocks, and bullies in the "in crowd"? - aka how do I deal with being an outsider (mutant)?]

They tried to handle this in some of the X-men movies, but I think they were off-target because they "think" they know what's "better" than the original.

I do think that the X-men movies were enjoyable and some of the better superhero movies out there (However, I have not enjoyed the handling of Dark Phoenix in the movies. Far too truncated and far too retconned for my tastes ... Dark Phoenix was a slow-boil thing in comics. plenty of foreshadowing for a long time before the ultimate solar system - if not galaxy spanning - confrontation.)

I didn't really know where I was going with this, but it seems to be rounding out to pointing to a storyline with Sentinels in it. We have seen the advancement in Kaiju films - the technology can do a good job on Sentinels at this point. I would definitely think a Sentinels storyline should stretch out over at least two movies. 1) so that the first one can have a cliffhanger and 2) so that the VFX (hopefully, used properly for abbreviation purests) could be used over the course of 2 or more films for budgetary concerns.

I have so many street level heroes and refuse to give them incarnate powers because it does not fit the theme of a street level hero. Is there anybody else who would love end game content that is not incarnate based? Maybe a city takeover by freak show, council, and new level 50 family sub group. I just want something else to do for those characters that’s meaningful on the same level as incarnates

There are plenty of missions in the AE that aren't farms.

Very few people were using them and Joystick probably needs a serious look to revamp it for modern game controllers (that's a whole other can of worms).

I have been using game controllers to play City of Heroes since I started playing just before the drop of episode 2.

I have always used Logitech controllers and used their profiler to set the controller to act like a keyboard.

Here is my thread about my use of the Logitech F310 and how I set up that controller.

The setup works very well for me and it might be helpful to look at my setup when setting up defaults for controllers.

Also, if you are setting up for controllers/joysticks I would make sure to make one setup for the XBox controller and one for PlayStation controllers. I don't use either, but those seem to be one one most likely to be "ported" over for use. I don't believe either of these have a default profiler system that allows them to be set to operate like a keyboard.

I included in my post is my setup file for the Logitech F310.

Most of the time. I'm digging through to find the costume parts that work best of the character conception.

Am I trying to make character concepts based on using parts that I haven't used before? Rarely.

    23 hours ago, DougGraves said:

Bonus question - do you use the random costume generator and how do you use it?

    Rarely.

Sometime I make a character because I want to use a powerset, and I didn't really pre-plan a character concept.

And I mean rarely. I think I have only done this once.

I randomized until I found something cool - not so many times as I remember - and then used that as the base and changed costume parts.

I can't remember, but I think that time I even make the character name after I made the costume and/or changed the character name to more meet the character's costume.

Right now you got to log in again and again then check each character

well, I have 2 problems with this.

    1) If it is going to show something I need on the character screen that isn't there, it would be more important to me to know if the character needs to level-up or not.

    2) I think it would cause massive delay and a strain on the system to have to draw additional information out of the character database and display it on the character selection screen.

If I really need to know how much a character has, I can track it on a spreadsheet.

I have general cap of x influence on a character, any more than that goes into email in 500M infl emails to myself. If a character doesn't have enough extra to load a 500M infl onto an email, then I just email what they have extras - next character, pull that less than 500M infl out and then rollback what extra that character has into an email and repeat until 500M infl.

Then I draw from one of those emails when ever I need loot which is mostly on a new character or if I'm going to buy a bunch of card packs.

    Topic!

    Origin contacts!

When they started funneling during the last years before the Sunset, they stopped directing new players to the Origin contacts in City Hall in Atlas. A lot of the Origin stuff is left out of the contact selection if you don't follow it and get the next Origin contact. An origin contact will give you two Origin contact choices part way through their arc that are not the same origin. At the last level or the level after their last contact level (for missions) they will/can offer you another origin contact of the same origin. If you use the wiki to check out contacts, it will list what origin they are if they have one.

You can solo a lot of the Hollows, but it more fun with a team.

Perez Park is great for street fighting with a team.

And I second running the Striga arcs.

    Croatoa is fun as well.

Before we can do that, I think it's important to recognize what sleep is, so that we can identify its strengths and weaknesses more clearly. Sleep is a Fragile Hold, that both completely shuts down an enemy but also breaks immediately on any form of damage. Because it is fragile, sleep tends to have a longer inherent duration than other control types. Sleep also sometimes has a higher base magnitude than other control types, and sleep magnitudes stack. The only thing I’m not personally clear on is whether or not sleep stacks linger for the full duration even if the target wakes up early, or if they’re lost entirely if the target gets woken up. Experience tells me that the latter is probably true, but I could be wrong so I don’t want to make any assertions.

I'm pretty sure it works like fear.

Hitting someone under the effect of the power allows them to make one retaliatory attack before coming under its influence.

It is important to note that Sleep is an auto hit on most non-PVP targets at this point.

The real power of sleeps - of course - is to get on a team where they know you are sleeping and understand not to attack the targets that are sleeping - aka use single target attacks on non-sleeping opponents first.

Sleep the minions while the team focuses on the Bosses and LT's but, of course, today there are so many people that only know how to play "Hulk smash!" and don't want to play any other way.
