About TheAltOption

  1. I've been trying to get in for months - finally made it!!
  2. My first and still my favorite is en/en blaster. Felt kind of Dragonball to me. There isn't another power in the game as satisfying as the energy snipe in sound, animation, and outcome. His first costume has long gone to the waste bin of the internet (I didn't see the "link colors" option at the bottom of the screen my first go through) but he still looks the same as he did in 2005 when I joined. Some of my choices don't quite line up, but he's looked the same for so long it would feel wrong to update him now!
  3. He meant rent of the server. 4700 * 11 = 51700 I think my day job just showed...
  4. Not everyone has $50K laying around. Renting also means that upgrades are effectively "free" and you don't worry about maintenance costs. A server of that level is also safely pulling 800wH under load which at the moment is staying almost 24/7 that isn't counted in the purchase price. And I assume you must live in Manhattan or downtown San Francisco if you think that's a years rend. That's 5.5 years of my mortgage!
  5. The fondest memory of this game is sitting next to me, waiting in queue right now so we can play. I didn't know it at the time, but my second or third Hami raid was a moment that would change my life forever. Since I wasn't 50 yet, I needed someone to sidekick me. I got sent to a scrapper to babysit me, and so of course there was chatter and banter and general good times for all. As time went on I kept hanging with the same group of people outside of the raids, and that same scrapper and I started playing together quite regularly. I found out that the girl on screen was played by a girl off-screen, and more about her personally. Fast forward to about 2006. She moves across country and I don't hear from her again for a while. About mid 2007 I get bored with the game and cancel my sub for a while. Then July 2008 I get a shiny new 8800GTS and decide I need to start up the game again to see how it plays on the new video card. As I'm running through the back alleys of Brickstown, I get a /t from a name I hadn't seen in years. "Hey stranger, where have you been?" That /t became an hour long conversation, followed by the revelation that she was living just a couple hours from me. We had our first date in August 2008, married in 2010, and I'm still amazed with her every day. For our anniversary last year, I commissioned a piece of art with hers and my mains walking through Atlas Park together. We've tried multiple other MMO's, but nothing held us the way of CoH. It's the best dating sim I have ever tried!
  6. Depends on the hardware level you're looking at and how long you intend to keep it going. Top of the line 4p Xeon system with 96 physical cores would cost close to $50K to get on line. I'm seriously looking to see what I would have to do to get a "just barely good enough" server up and running, though, just so I can have the most stable connection ever!
  7. I have to agree. Literally - there's a piece of art hanging on the side of my bed. Two characters from the game walking hand in hand by the Atlas statue. Those characters belong to myself and my wife, whom I first met standing on South Rock waiting for a Hami raid. She and I remade our characters last night, and even though we're a whopping lvl 4 each, just running the two characters together for the first time in so many years was enough to illicit tears. This game has had a singularly significant impact on my life, and I am more than willing to wait to play it again.
  8. I will never understand that part of capitalism. "This product is making money, but not the amount I want. Time to cut off that entire income stream!" I mean money is money!
  9. I recognize that name! @Cid Noir :)
