  1. Were it not for random and occasionally disastrous PuGs, I'd probably have quit this game shortly after discovering it.

That doesn't mean if I have a really banger of a story about PuG disaster, I wouldn't share it just as @Snarky is doing.  He's just "luckier" than me apparently. 🤪

I went to look at why the Stone/Fire Melee had breezed through Manticore and the only thing I saw was the softcapped defense to psi... Well, softcapped defense to everything I guess. I had 38% defense to energy and once debuffed Ablative was of no help.

Soft-capped *and* DDR protected defense on the Stoner.  If you are being hit by Enervating Field from a +2 PP boss, you've just lost around 36% res(all) no matter what you had to begin with.  If defense is also stripped on the Bio by gunfire and/or Rad Infections, yeah, you're down to relying on absorb and heal vs increased damage from res debuff.  Not good.

At least you weren't fighting CoT at that level at the +4 setting...

As it was I was glad I logged in a bit early and got another DFB run in.  So I still had time left on my amps.  I had +acc and +recovery buffs from DFB.  I had slotted both ATO procs.  Added some ACC enhancement to my attacks.  Kismet.  Shield Wall.   Added a few base empowerment buffs.   The temp AoEs.  Loaded my insp tray with orange candies.  Checked the status of my Last Will and Testament.

You know... normal preparations for a @Spaghetti Betty team.  🤪

I have seen it done where someone created multiple versions of the same character and treated them as different armor suits worn by the same person, but this was back before the old server shutdown and we didn't have the unlimited rename tokens then that we have now, so I think he just designated the different versions with a number at the end of the name.

I've just started toying with this same idea on a cyber-assassin character of mine.  Her name is "Chrome Ninja" so other than being vaguely ninja/assassin themed (which the costume, Stalker AT, and Ninja Run pretty much take care of), the name doesn't exclude any powersets.  I did a fairly obvious Staff/Ninja/Elec Stalker to start with but am now working on an Elec/Ice Stalker.  I can play this as just having different cybernetics equipped.   Could easily work as a Scrapper or maybe even Archery/Ninja(or Martial) Blaster.

Despite the grueling beginnings it was still overall fun. I have high hopes that the new players will continue attending, and also that our dark/stone tanks will make for an interesting team especially as everyone levels them up.

I swear I saw a half level worth of xp on the first spawn.  But it also seemed like it took us 5-10 minutes.

I definitely feel no shame that we brought grenades and plasmatic tasers.  That stuff saved lives (sometimes) with the knockback... which was also fun to watch.

I definitely think the EA effects will help the character feel more like Gambit, even though he doesn't really glow, himself.

Probably right.  Except for the concept, I'd have suggested Staff/Ninja/Mu.  I have one and it's really effective.  Melee defense is solid and the build has room for a few alternatives if you're not into Smoke Flash or Blinding Powder.  I like Caltrops for reducing incoming attacks if I need it and it's great for interrupting an ambush train coming at the team from behind.

What about memory? I'm at 32GB of DDR4 3200MHZ RAM. I can't tell what actually gets bottlenecked from CoH - is it a game engine limitation??

16GB DDR4 3000MHz.  I doubt it's memory limited.   At some point I will probably try going through settings again with some perf monitor overlays up to see who's getting maxed out.  I am guessing the game just can't use all the cores so it's probably maxing just one or two of them and idling the rest.  Ultra Mode, old as it is, is also probably doing things in software that the GPU could do in hardware.

I appreciate you sharing this - I too have the 8700K CPU and I've been debating whether upgrading my GPU (currently a GTX 1080) to a 40 series would make any noticeable impact on my gaming experience with CoH. Sounds like we have the same framerates - what display resolution are you using? I'm hitting the same frames at 1440p.

Same.  2560x1440.  The monitor I recently bought is 3440x1440 ultrawide but I experience more slowdowns with that so obviously there must be some CPU hit that scales with resolution in this engine because no way is the 4080 even breaking a sweat with this game.

Im still running NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, i7 core main processor 8700 CPU @ 3.2Ghz, only 8 GB ram. This game doesn't even need that.

I'm on an i7-8700K but with a RTX4080.  GPUs are just so much easier to upgrade and for the most part, even the latest games are doing just fine still for me because I don't play at ludicrous refresh rates.  Once I turn up every graphics setting in a game, it usually maxes out the GPU before the CPU and I'm still north of 60fps with variable refresh rate smoothness.

... except for CoH. Most of the time, it's fine.  But with Ultra Mode and everything turned up it will run into framerate problems in some zones or with large crowds of players/enemies.  Like, it'll be going 120fps in one zone and then go to Atlas or Cap Au Diable and for some reason in places it will chug down into the 30s or 40s.  And it REALLY doesn't like me trying to go 21:9, so I am currently playing letterboxed at 16:9.

I assume it's CPU limited and probably not using more than one or two threads.  But I haven't bothered to fire up a CPU overlay to check it.  I am long overdue to replace everything outside of the GPU.   Probably with a PC built around a Ryzen 7800X3D.

    Have said this for years.

Unstop is not an "FU Click"

It's a suicide button with a short delay.

Agreed, though for Paragon Protectors it's a MUCH shorter delay than for players.  They have no base resistance and get only 70% res from Unstop.  On most teams I've been on, these guys get their Unstop burned down pretty quick.  They are waaaay less annoying than the ones that MoG/Elude.

My biggest peeve with those guys is usually my own teammates.  Folks... just stop.  Ignore them.  Let them follow a Tank/Brute to the next spawn.  They will tucker out eventually.

Does the staff AS still do that weird redraw partway through the animation?

Not that I've seen, but it used to only happen when you did AS from Hide without the staff drawn already.   BU+AS would always work because BU caused the draw animation and then AS was fine.  Now with the overhaul to the weapon draw, the staff draw animation will only play the first time or after a long idle.   So you would only use it if you skipped BU for your first AS from Hide.  And who does that?  Lots of people these days don't EVER used AS from Hide anymore.

Easy enough to test though.  If I think of it next time I'm playing, I'll try it.

  12. Level 7 and so far my greatest challenge is getting Dark Armor not to look like ass in the character creator.  I have mostly had to go with No Fade and No Pulse.   Dear Lord... I am so glad I never bothered to try before these options were available.  I can't imagine how anyone plays.. blinking like that all the time.

Then I got Obsidian Shield and it put a pulsating cheese halo around CG's head!   Okay, so go to minimal FX right?  WRONG!  Now the halo is gone but the fade/blinking is back.  Khaaaaaaan!

Okay, but I am used to this from playing Rad Armor.  So I put it back on No Fade/Pulse and colored it a very dark shade of cheese.   And now at least it's less visible.

What's that?  But other than that how does it play?  Eh... it's okay so far.

You're braver than I am! I have been doing a lot of number crunching and I won't be unveiling anything until the project is finished.

When you gaze in awe at the manifest splendor of this new Tanker concept of mine you will know with certainty that...

.. I am obviously just winging it.

DPS difference on a Brute definitely seems to be greater on a Brute than a Blaster (Water blast, being the sole exception, it seems).

I'm just waiting for someone to notice that the top three DPS spots in that data belong to Brutes... not Blasters.

Yeah nothing to see here folks.  Just the supposed top damage dealers of the game being eclipsed by a few meatheads with anger management issues. 🤪

Seriously though, this isn't science or even math.   There isn't an equation telling us which way is the right way.  It's game design philosophy.  You are either for the idea that there should be somewhat more space between ATs and roles or you aren't.  It's a matter of opinion.  I happen to think it's nice when the glass cannons get the most damage.  I always thought that about Stalkers (at least amongst melee ATs) but for the longest time during Live it wasn't even close to true and still isn't to this day in some cases.  And I think the non-DPS ATs were gifted powerful support abilities mostly to make others more powerful and not just so they could solo like Scrappers.

But not everyone shares that opinion.  Cool.  But some people here could do with admitting their pro-procs stance is just as much an opinion too.  I DO think that at the very least, PPM should mean something and global recharge (and global radius/arc strength too, my fellow Tankers) should factor into the proc math.
