  1. So... I was thinking about a faction standing system.

    Might be cool redside, not so much blue side, where heroes are powerful individuals - (a notion that was repeatedly hard-sold to us throughout the 20th century). Villains are usually team players (you know, being reds, communists and all that).


    I was wondering if it might be possible to emphasise this by having red side players gain faction standing when they do missions for prominent villains - perhaps they could rise through ranks, like the NPCs do. Maybe they get a temp power depending on their rank - if they rise, they lose that one and get the next one up. Maybe they get an exclusive texture they can put on their outfit to show rank/faction?

    - I liked the idea of a character being someone in a faction, not just an outsider who gets merc jobs.


    Seems a lot of work, but might be kinda fun?

    You've got a point, there's some merit there. 


    Perhaps we can read it as the buildings being reflective of the character-feel they're supposed to evoke;

    • Sky-scrapers were seen as grand accomplishments, towering monuments to human progress and suchlike, super-human effigies, taking us beyond our normal physical forms. Like heroes.
    • The more human-scale brick dwellings, on the other hand, remind us of something more functional and mundane, restricted by the simple building materials and limited by affordability. That grim backdrop could perhaps be seen as justification or cause for criminal activity.

    Still not sold on this. They seem to be drab brick and Arachnos buildings instead of drab cityscape skyscrapers.

    This. I've said before that it should be a party atmosphere, at least in some areas - lots of neon, lots of chaotic party - it's what Freakshow and Skuls and Outcasts all do on Blue side when you're 'arresting' them.


    Aside from environment, I think the fundamental issue is the one which the OP puts their finger on, we all fundamentally see ourselves as good people, or at least doing bad things short term because it's necessary to achieve a good outcome long term. That is not what the text says when I'm doing red side missions, the story on red side is that of a villain seeking to become ever more powerful - that's a pre-scripted story that doesn't really work with most of the head-canon stuff people have going on when they create a character.

    "Luis Pedros was doing great. Having secured a job with the Repsol Honda Moto GP team as a test rider at the age of only 17, he was well on his way to break into the big leagues of Moto GP. Unfortunately that all changed with a horrific crash in testing, that left Luis fighting for his life. The teams sponsers, the Repsol Energy and Petroleum Company, took care of Luis at their private hospital but due to the extent of his injures, Luis lost his battle a few weeks later. Wind forward 10 years to the present day, and an unknown vigilante has appeared on the streets of Paragon City and is all over the front pages. Luis' family can not shake the feeling this new hero is familiar and approach Repsol for more information on their son's death, to be firmly brushed off by the company. They approach the media for help, who begin an investigation into the circumstances of Luis' death but are also stonewalled by the secretive company. Pushing the issue, and dubbing the mysterious vigilante as the 'Repsol Racer' to draw the company out, the media are instead slapped with a lawsuit by Repsol, who deny any connection to the costumed individual and the nickname, but now the people have got hold of the story, and the name has stuck..."

    That's all well and good, but what if you're doing story missions because the game actually exists before level 18?


    Like I said before, it is what it is/there's nothing you can do about it/that's CoH for you/etc.

    I'm not going to disagree, but I'll ask what does game-breaking mean in a game where being OPAF doesn't matter, and in fact happens naturally because some class/powerset combos are just plain better than others?

    You're talking about newbies who've just watched their favourite influencer. It's extremely likely that they're oblivious to the problem.


    They need to be made aware in a manner that isn't overly aggressive.


    This issue can be seen from both sides. It's on the publisher to realise that these ARE homages to the characters of their IP. It's not as if some kid playing Homecoming is going to become incredibly wealthy by playing out their fantasies in some sticky corner of the internet. These are the target audience of the publisher and they risk alienating them if the publisher attacks Homecoming. That's lifetime of buying tasteless plastic dolls of <Insertname>man down the pan.


    Not to mention that the quality of some of these rip-offs is sometimes really high. I've been quite impressed.

    The two are very different and you sound confused. 

    Latency/Lag/Dial Up = the time between you pushing a button and your character responding


    Activation time = the time your character takes to use a power, which is varied by power and balanced accordingly. 

    There are sets with fast activation times if you want something ‘more responsive’ in that regard. And HC devs have made efforts to reduce activation times that were needlessly long. There are still some powers that could use some help in that regard (radiation infection toggle!) but otherwise it HAS been improved.

    Nothing wrong with a cast time/build up for powerful spells 🙂

    It's hard to understand where cast times end and lag begins (or vice versa).
