It’s so difficult to get a decent name that one often has to resort to adding extraneous stuff just to get something serviceable. It seems likely that many of the ‘used’ names are sitting on unplayed characters who have only been logged in long enough to log right back out. Now they sit there doing the CoH equivalent of cybersquatting, except unlike domain squatting, there’s no registration fee and no way to contact the current owner. In some cases, the dead names are on an account that’s now inactive, and there may be up to 1000 per account. I propose a recycling system. Each character has a claim to their name equal to their level +2. Logging in with a character restarts its claim countdown. This means that a level 1 namesquatter will need to be logged in once every three weeks, and a level 50 will only need to be refreshed once a year. If someone honestly plans to use a name in the near future, it’s not too much to ask that they affirm their intent by logging it in once every few weeks. If an inactive account comes back, their characters may be fine or they may face the name search just as every new character does. Another possibility is to allow duplicate character names, but with an @globalname tag added after their character name in chat, and in the info displayed when right-clicking them, but I think name recycling is the better option.
I can't remember if you get to name your pets for other classes but masterminds get to have a lot of fun naming their pets for sure. I was just going back through old screenshots and found this one. The character's name was Dark Future, and these were her demon pets. I still get a laugh out of telemarketer. Demon summoning/Time manipulation, for those curious. Post your favorites! If you're on windows, I recommend the snipping tool, it's handy for all sorts of things like this!
Hello, This is my first post since joining the forum last night. I can't tell you how excited I was when a friend of mine let me know that there was a community-run server for City of Heroes, a game I absolutely loved and played a ton of in my younger years. I completed the download last night and jumped right into character creation. That is when Disappointment punched me in the face. Completed an Ice Blaster only to find that every derivation of icy, cold, frigid, arctic name you can think of is already taken. I am literally on naming attempt 30 or 40 now... Wish me luck trying to successfully achieve my own homecoming. ~Chad
