Dark/Time "Cone-Troller" Build

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I recently got Dark/Time to level 50. I'm hoping for some feedback on anything I missed.

A specific build goal was to keep Wall of Force in the build. I really like its animation, recharge, and how it blends well with Fearsome Stare >> Wall of Force >> Energy Torrent. The power is a surprisingly wide 90 degrees, so altho it does less damage than Torrent, it recharges faster and hits a much wider area.

(Full disclosure: I'm currently in the suggestions forum arguing that Power Boosted Farsight should not be a thing. While it is tho, I plan to take full advantage/abuse of it.)

  • I took the Intuition Radial Paragon. This provides Hold, Damage, Slow Movement (wasted on this build), Defense Debuff, To Hit Debuff, and Range

  • Power Boosted Farsight gives  22.9% ToHit, which, combined with +6% Kismet looks like enough to slot zero accuracy in most powers and still hit +4s. I hope my math is correct on these. Because I am already getting +33% Damage from the Alpha slot, a single slot of additional damage brings up the power's damage numbers. I slotted a Damage/Range in cones where possible to make the cones huge.
    • The alpha does not seem to increase the cones size of Wall of Force in Mids. I need to see in game if it resizes the cone appropriately. The final cone size should be close to 50ft

  • This is the only build I have ever skipped the 6th slot in Coercive Persuasion or Will of the Controller. However I just dont think they are useful here. Ranged defense when Farsight is Power Boosted is 41.5% and this build is loaded with (Power Boosted) -ToHit. It just seems much wiser for the average situation to sit just under the soft cap and get more damage procs.

  • I took Conserve Power instead of Power Blast, so the build's overall single target damage is a bit below where it could be. Project Will is my "better than nothing" alternative. It animates slower and does less damage. But, it unlocks Wall of Force.

  • I've never tried procced out Weaken Resolve before. This will be an interesting experiment. Just based on what I've seen in some other powers it should deliver a decent punch with 3 procs and a chance for 20% resist.

  • Clarion is definitely the Destiny slot for this. Just need to decide whether to take the full-time mezz protection one, or the force multiplier one for even more outrageous -ToHit.

I welcome your feedback.

Procc'ed out Weaken Resolve is pretty good, but, just one thing: Make sure it actually takes Cloud Senses in-game. The in-game description says it takes to-hit debuff, but not Accurate To Hit debuff, and I don't think I was actually able to slot it. Maybe they fixed it so that it would, but for right now, don't hang your hat on that until you've actually confirmed it!

I can confirm that it does NOT take Accurate To Hit debuff sets, taking its damage down from 183 to 122 at level 50. :(... at 183 it's probably worth the slotting and activation time. At 122, it's not worth it as a damage power, and it will put out about 30% -Resist debuff but eat up about 20% of your activation time in doing so, while also doing a bit of damage. It's worth it, IMO, on my Illusion/Storm because so much of the character's damage is not coming from the character's activations, so there is time to fit it in and increase the damage from all of the Storm powers and summons by 30% (more like 20%, actually, given level differences). On a Dark/Time, I'm not sure it's worth it... it's a single-target power, and your single-target damage is mostly coming from two procced-out Holds plus an Immobilize as a filler.

Speaking of that, I see that the build is tight with power choices. But if looking at single-target damage, Time Stop with 4 damage procs (move the Hold purple in there, since Dark Grasp has enough proc options) is about 290 damage. That seems worth it to me, and also gives two Holds to immediately Hold problem Bosses. But it does seem hard to fit it into Dark/Time with so many good powers.

Yup. My Necro/Nature MM found this out the hard way for both this AND Life steal-thingy.

Why are you leaving Slowed Response to 49? Thats your -resist aoe, and those are some of the best power multipliers around.

So I've been playing with this build some more and decided that the Boxing/Tough/Weave tree was overkill. So, I've dropped Defense so that with Power Boosted Farsight, Ranged is soft capped, while other defenses are at about 37%, 8 points from soft cap. With all the -ToHit I have flying around it just makes sense to spend less endurance on 2 armor toggles.

It does mean my S/L resist drops to around 49%.

However, I get to take Haunt, Distortion Field, and Combat Jumping in the place of the 3 powers I dropped.

If I've done my math on Farsight right, despite my lack of overall Accuracy slotting in this build, all powers should have no issues hitting +4 enemies. Even if there is a little bit of a gap, Slowed Response should lower defense enough to cover it.

The Alpha slot is Intuition Radial Paragon for +Damage, +Range (to expand the cones), +Hold, -Run Speed, -ToHit, and -Defense.

The Destiny slot will be Clarion with +Special +Range to make the cones crazy huge and continue to build on Power Boost craziness.

Note there's a bug in Mids that doesn't apply the extra Range from the alpha slot to Wall of Force. I've tested it in game and it does work. I currently have both Wall of Force and Energy Torrent with 53ft range. I'm still working toward the Destiny slot to make the size of them epic (at least when Destiny is first activated).

Here are the non-Power Boosted values. Power Boost will add 11.53 Defense to each of these.

  • 26.1+ 11.53  = 37.63
  • 31.1 +11.53 = 42.63
  • 36.1 + 11.53 = 47.63

Here's the Power Boosted ToHit. With 28.3 +ToHit and the Global Accuracy I have (+48) I should be able to hit up to +4 with no actual Accuracy slotting.

Update. I took a recent video of the character. The build is not complete (no purples yet).

Damage is not bad, not great. This missions is set to +4 x5, no bosses. I find that is the main comfort zone so far. I can push it up to x8 but it's more work to deal with. Ditto with bosses, the damage just isn't there to deal with them.

Overall though I'd say I'm happy with the way this build "feels." The cones are truly huge, especially after activating Clarion, and the character is incredibly sturdy and safe.

I do need to become more skilled at playing it tho. 🙂 I have to remember to resort to single target attacks on the final couple of enemies instead of continuing to AoE.

Hi! This build looks super interesting.  I'm new to Dark/Time, and am overwhelmed by the amount of options when it comes to building your character.

About this build - is it frustrating not having a travel power?  What are some other options for pool powers? Are there important considerations or areas that are easier to compromise on than others?

Thank you for your help!

Dark/Time has the "problem" that pretty much all the powers are good. To the extent this is actually a problem. 🙂

Overall I'd say the biggest limitation is lagging single target damage. But that's a given with almost any Controller primary except Gravity. My particular build doesnt help matters with skipping Power Blast, but its a sacrifice I was willing to make.
