Fire/Shield need some input/help/advice

I have never played a fire/shield brute yet. I have been wanting to make so I did and my character is lvl 50 but not level up yet.  I would like to ask a few questions about fire/shield power set and get some feed back about the power set and get some input from guys on my build.  Questions listed below

1. Should I take Incinerate over Greater Fire Sword

2. Should I 6 slot Fire Swrod Circle or keep it 5 slots

3. On the True Grit power is better to slot it for Max hp, Res or do a hybrid of so many health io and then so many res io

4. Is it a good idea to slot Shield charge with Superior avalanche

5. Is having 61% res to s/l/f/c good enough for my res

6.  For my def having the following numbers is it good enough for soloing on pve and farming both s/l and fire. My def to s/l is 36%, my def to f/c is 35%, and finally my def to melee is 54%, AoE 52%, Range 39%. This is without no incarnates either

7. This is my first build for this power set is there anything that needs to fixed, changed, or replaced. All help would be great looking to forward to using this power set after its all done and decked out the right way

8. With no healing power should I take the incarnate heal power or stay with ageless

I haven't played this on a brute but I had a fire/sd scrapper on live. I skipped cremate for GFS. Always slotted true grit with a mix of panaceas and glad armr for mix of heal and resist but mostly i found it the best place for the procs. Never slotted shield charge with avalanche set so I dunno if that's a good idea or not. Defence numbers I always go for 45+ to all if possible. I was forced into both cardiac and ageless on live to keep mine running I haven't tried the others. I'd probably go for something like this, you could stick gaussian set in build up and a cyto in tactics but I prefer it this way:

1. Yes

2. 6 for a proc, but its up to you.

3. I just checked and you get more regen slot for slot by adding into health. I'd say either one on this, its up to you. Typically I err on the side of the resistance as it keeps me in the fight longer.

4. No, you want a lot of procs in there.

5. With sopftcapped defenses, kind of. At +4x8 you will likely still need to heal somehow (inspirations?)

6. SD is a positional set and so it mainly buffs melee, range, and AOE defense. It's much easier to build to the 45% softcap in melee and range then call it a day. Your resistance is not great, but you should be able to handle most content if you just bring some greens with you because of your excellent defenses.

7.  I'll post what I think would woirk better below.

8. I'd go rebirth yeah.

proc slotting the aoe on a brute? Sure, for +self buffs, but superior avalanche is, IMO. a better choice if it gets you closer to caps. all those procs will maybe affect one or two targets, and while I agree with force feedback, the rest usually only works in mid's.

I really do not understand your slotting, @Darkir, usually you produce outstanding ideas, so I will just.... show my version instead, and let @Washuchan figure out what he wants.

First Off, weaken is vastly more kickass than Melt armor. Both is awesome, but if you have to pick one, pick Weaken.

Secondly, Fire melee ON BRUTES is a single target beast. but having a bit of extra AoE is okay if you want to farm a little... but I'd rather overcap a bit so DA content doesn't hurt so much. DA uses all three positionals like... constantly, but fortunately they are mostly S/L. One with the shield gives you the occasional emergency downtime without too much pain, and ball lightning gives you a bigger radius to catch all those bastards that are hard to clump up, and also the slotting option to add the extra spike to overcap ranged defense.

Stealth is moved so you can stealth early exemplared missions, rather than Super speed, and your aoe attack chain is small, but useable without hasten, so you can auto active defense instead. Ageless will tighten it up nicely. Plus, if you need a bit of extra mitigation, stomp will knock everything down and has a decent radius. tactics keeps you from getting smoked,

And yeah, your single-target chain is sick. Fire sword is a 150 dps taunt mule. keep kick on your bar, but you don't have to use it very often...but when you do, it can give you a recharge boost.

Note, because of your innate damage boosts from Fury and against all odds, Musculature provides very little benefit when a couple of reds can cap you. Agility, however, tightens up your aoe attack chain, improves your endurance, and drags your defense even closer to Itrial softcap territory. Also, I hate narrow long-range cones on brutes. I know breath of fire is a good AOE attack, but all the lost single target attacks and other complications to use it, INCLUDING the fact that you have to step away from a spawn and LOSE your against all odds damage bonus, make it a non-starter.

well, anyway. Here's the build. use it or dissect it or steal it or whatever you want.

I should have noted in my post that I was trying to follow his build roughly and maintain his power selections (thus the reason I posted a build with SS and SJ). Yes, Superior Brute's Fury is better in GFC. If I was to remake everything from scratch it would look like this.

Now I still went pyre mastery over Mu because melt armor is a 16 target AOE debuff and weaken resolve is ST. Melt armor also lasts for 40 seconds and so I don't need to recast it (of course I wouldn't be able to anyway given the recharge). I feel that fire already has fantastic ST dmg and so I would rather get more AOE. It also lets you do this AOE combo that I really enjoy Build Up>Melt Armor>Shield Charge>Fireball>Greater Fire Circle. It needs to be executed very quickly, but it allows you to get the full Build Up+Gaussian Proc for all three damaging powers, with fireball and GFC hitting with -49.75% res to everything (remember that damage is calculated at activation and not at completion of the cast). It would also, be quite simple to get both weaken resolve and melt armor (just switch out combat jumping and put the +5 LOTG recharge into grant cover). If you wanted, you could switch out one with shield for tactics to get shield charge and melt armor to the acc cap against +3s, but they are at 91.87% acc atm (the cap is 95%) so I am ok with that in exchange for the oh shit button. While on a team tactics would be better though. I should also not that the two preventative medicine IOs in health are the most expendable in the build, feel free to move them around as you see fit. You could put one each in true grit and tough for example to get a lot more AOE defense.

I strongly encourage you to try out the way I have shield charge setup above with the FF proc, 2 damage procs, and the -res proc. It allows it to do much more damage and gives you the -20% res proc for your follow up. I believe it is better compared to how you have it setup in your build.

I like to take grant cover because it gives everyone a 10%+ defense bonus to all in a fifteen radius (the radius of a fireball), and while that radius is not great, its decent while teaming as long as the squishies know how it works. The other big reason why I take it is for the defense debuff resistance. With Grant Cover, Active Defenses, and Battle Agility this puts our defense debuff resistance to 52.9%. This allows you to fight Cimoreans or other defense debuff enemies with relative ease as you are mostly protected from a defense debuff cascade death.

I also don't think that GFS is that great of a power, it is only marginally better than fire sword in DPA/DPS and so I typically skip it. In the build you posted your ST attack chain is presumably Cremate>Incinerate>GFS, at fury 70 (which you had set) this combo equates to 202.85 dps (302+374.2+439.5=1115.7/5.5 second cast time). I took the proc out of cremate and +5'd all the purples and all the kinetic combat IOs in order to give you the most dps, except for the proc, I didn't think we should include that as the proc has a pretty low chance. Now if we simply 5 slot fire sword with crushing impact in your build we'll use it for a Cremate>Incinerate>Fire Sword ST chain and we get 201.46 dps (302+374.2+230.4=906.6/4.5 second cast time. So, we get 1.45 ST dps by using greater fire sword, completely not worth the power choice in my opinion. Now there is something to be said for using one attack to finish off the mob instead of needing to use two, but I'd rather have all the quick attacks and another power choice.

Here is how I modified your build for the ST DPS calculations:

Finally, if we want to focus more on personal AOE damage, of course Mu is better because it gives us an extra AoE attack in electric fences, while ball lightning is only slightly worse than fireball. So, if we take my build above and go Mu instead and we take weaken resolve lets see what we can do.

We get very good personal AoE potential with Mu mastery and better ST DPS with weaken resolve and we lose some recharge and some AoE defense. Hasten would still be perma because of the FF proc in shield charge. I still like melt armor for teaming, but if you wanted to solo this is almost certainly better.

P.S. @Frostweaver Thanks for commenting, I likely never would have looked at this again.

@Darkir Well, you have certainly made me want to try a build with both weaken AND melt armor. Not this particular one, since I simply do not LIKE brute Fire melee and think shields is weaksauce on brutes (for obvious, fury-and-autocombining-reds reasons, the same reasons I don't care for brute musculature) but on a set with REAL AOE and decent single like savage/rad or WM/EA, I could see using both approaches could dramatically improve both teaming and ST experience, and they both stack (which rocks)

As far as the build is concerned, I figured it was probably pretty obvious that GFS is slotted ONLY for the 1.88 defense, although to be fair, I could have slotted the set into kick just as easily and saved a power slot, with a lot more incentive to use Kick and get the FF proc, but kick is such a bloody fast attack that my first thought was to avoid slotting a recharge-boosting set into it. My goal was to get as much recharge and defense as possible to get close to the Incarnate cap +3 with Agility, without using hasten. Of course, I did not consider that doing DA solo at more than +0 was really, really dumb, and that in an Itrial you ALWAYS have at least a 10% defense bonuses unless you run off to solo.

Then again, if it WAS shifted to Kick, You could re-slot Unleash potential with a recharge, and UP every 300 seconds is pretty darned powerful when paired opposite the other 'oh crap' powers.
