Help with Plant/Fire/Fire Build at 50

Recommended Posts

I have taken the below build to 50 and now must enter  the dreaded "enhancement? which enhancement?" phase of building.  My provisional build is, if the technology gods allow, below.  I already possess most of

the sets.  I am wondering if, in my desire to use those sets, I have wandered off course.  There is an empty last slot in Carrion Crawlers that was supposed to contain an Impeded Swiftness enhancement but I could not

find it in my version of Mids.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Strangler: Hold sets are generally strong, so this is probably a poor place to seat the ATO.
  • Flares: Your ST rotation isn’t closed, so you probably need to slot this (since you’re forced to take it anyway).
  • Roots: This is primarily a damage-dealing power. Dominating Grasp isn’t a particular good set for your purposes since it has neither recharge nor Ranged def.
  • Hover/Fly: You can save a slot by ditching the Slow Resistance and shift the KB resistance into Fly. If you’re getting hit with Slow effects, you have a lot more to be worried about than the Slow itself.
  • Fire Blast: The 6th Apocalypse does little for you (Psi Defense well below soft cap). Even a Toxic damage proc would work better here.
  • Tough: The HO is unnecessary. Aegis and Gladiator’s Armor 2-set bonuses aren’t fantastically useful, but they’re better than nothing. I’m not sure you use a stray Resistance IO from Aegis.
  • Vines: Even with all those procs, this isn’t going to do all that much damage. You’d be much better off spending the slots in Fire Breath.
  • Afterburner: You really don’t need additional Flight speed here.
  • Maneuvers: I go with 4-set on LotG sometimes, but with 3 slots I’d probably just grab the 2-set for S/L Resist from one of the other Defense sets.
  • Carrion Creepers: I’m not entirely sure on the need for accuracy in this power (I believe it can do out). Slotting recharge would be helpful, though.
  • Tactics: Throwing some hit enhancements in here would push up your Blazing Bolt damage a tad.
  • Sting of the Manticore: Another situation where tthe 6-set doesn’t get you much. You’re nowhere near the Toxic/Psi hard-cap, so taking a trifle less damage from an uncommon source isn’t going to benefit you much.
  • Blaze: Winter sets are great if you’re building for positionals. But you aren’t, so why spend the influence?
  • Rain of Fire: Unless something has changed, procs in Rains aren’t all that great.
  • Fireball: Another unnecessary 6-slot.
  • Fire Shield: This just puzzles me. I can’t figure out why you’re 6-slotting this. You absolutely don’t need that much enhancement in categories like Recharge and the set bonuses aren’t all that impressive.

  • Sprint: Celerity is almost universal here
  • Health: I like to add Numina’s to the mix, but it’s probably not strictly necessary.
  • Stamina: Power Transfer also goes well here.

Overall, I think your recharge and your Ranged Def are both too low.

You get one +10% bonus from the 6-slot Dominator set. You’ve got two more from CP and Apocalypse. You can have 5 total, and usually the control sets are the best. You’re one short on LoTG and there are plenty of defensive pool powers that are possible choices.

Basilisk’s Gaze 4-slot is a cheap source of +7.5% recharge (and +1.25% Ranged Def). 6-slot Artillery gives 4%+ Ranged def. 2-slot BotZ gives +1.25% Ranged Def as well.

There are a number of design decisions - most notably the lack of Hasten - that tend to be peculiarities of my own. But a lot of what I'm doing with sets should help you hit the targets you're looking for.

He is new to all the IO's and Mids Hjarki so thank you for giving him some good info.

Work on your def more and try to improve your recharge. You don't have to go crazy just get a reasonable amount.

I'm not understanding the lack of Audrey -- is this a thematic thing? I think you can fit it any theme, so I don't get that. I also think the 3 flies are a bit overkill, and that vengeance is a better use overall as a mule/random use ability...

Personally I can't really help outside of a whole different build. But YMMV

Youre running at like 70-80% accuracy for a large portion of powers... for what reason?

Depends on your play-style and what you hope to accomplish.

From my perspective--at vet level 89--the Fly Trap is a total waste, except as you to level to 50, and I re-specced out of it by vet level 40.  Of course, I was, and am still running, fire farms,   occasional 54/8 PI radio missions and ITF's when the mood strikes me.    I use hover though and am not ground based so your mileage may differ.

In terms of Incarnates, I now run Agility in my Alpha slot and Ageless in my Destiny slot (I also tried a T4 Musclature and Rebirth).   In most situations, your 'killer' attacks are Creepers, Roots, Blazing Bolt, Blaze, Fireball and Fire Blast.  With Agility I found my attacks re cycled faster.   If you use Ageless, I am not sure what be benefit you will get from Consume.  Perhaps, proc it out a bit for more damage?

This is a very fun build and can do AE fire farms, 54/8 PI missions and ITF without raising a sweat.  I hope you get as much pleasure from your build as I  do mine.  Please feel free to keep us posted on how it is going.

Hmm, I might be missing something but I don't see this? The lowest ACC on a power is Melt Armor at 115%

I've ran this build on the test server and had no issues hitting anything. If I do have issues I would probably drop the pet and two slot Tactics.

I've chosen not to worry too much about defense (hitting exactly 32.5 ranged defense) or resistance (running almost the bare minimum) in favor of recharge and damage procs.  My philosophy on surviveability on this character is to rely on Seeds of Confusion, which is enough 99% of the time.  Seeds + Roots + Strangler [for any dangerous enemies that got super lucky] is pretty much all I use, but if it all goes sideways then I just use Rise of the Phoenix and try again.  I did a few Fire Farms though and kill speed + insp drops was enough to keep me alive 😮

My thoughts on some specific powers:

Fire Blast - For a very long time I took Incinerate over Fire Blast so that I could slot Hecatomb into it, but I'm much happier having swapped it out for Fire Blast so that I can be pure ranged.  Definitely recommend.  I'm not 100% sure about my slotting for Fire Blast here since I'm not getting the most value out of the Build Up proc and for a long time that proc was in Blazing Bolt, where it went off a LOT.

Roots - I hear people say that they use this power for damage, but, it's a pretty long DoT and does significantly less DPA than Fire Breath, a power that people routinely skip.  For me, I just use Roots as the only place where I can slot the full Ascendancy set since the bonuses are too good to pass up and there's no other place I would possibly want to put it.  Not putting it in either Hold powers because 4pc Basilisk's gaze is just too efficient, definitely not putting it in Seeds because the Coercive Persuasion set is also amazing, so, Roots it is.

Fire Breath - related, a lot of people skip this, but I actually like it.  It has a cool animation and even at 50 I still use it once in a while.  I'm very glad I have it when I'm exemplared down below 30ish, when I lose access to Fireball and Rain of Fire.

Consume - Even with Ageless and Domination on a 70 second cooldown, once in a while I'll use Consume.  This character really goes through endurance fast.  Opening a fight with Carrion Creepers (26 End) + Rain of Fire (26 End) + Fire Ball (12 End) is more than half your blue bar in like 4 seconds. Also it's a lifesaver if I'm using a different Destiny power as I sometimes do (sometimes I'm on Barrier or Incandescence)

Fly Trap - waaaaay back on Live, I skipped Fly Trap because I RP'd this character heavily and Fly Trap didn't fit the concept.  I'm sure it's a good pet but I've never felt like I was missing something, but I have to admit I've never tried it out.

Are you looking at even con? I assume +3s are the target.

The reason Roots is such a powerful attack is partly the radius and target cap. It's a 30ft radius power with a target cap of 16. Most Dominator cones cap at 10 targets and the spherical powers tend to be 15ft radius.

At a glance, 30ft radius sounds like its double the area of a 15ft radius power. Actually, it's 2827ft vs 706ft (more than 4 times the size).

Although it does do only about 17 DPA before enhancements and procs, it's also likely to hit more targets than a 15ft radius AoE.

Fire Control isn't toooo far behind with ~15 DPA.

Ice Control.... ouch. The less said about that the better.

Here's a couple of the immobilizes DPA compared to the DPA of some of the APP attacks (and some Psi attacks and Blaster Archery since I happened to be looking at that). In comparison they don't seem too strong, but remember most app attacks start with a Recharge of 32 and end on a top end build at around 9 seconds (exception is Explosive Blast, which is half that). They also have a 15ft radius.

Yes it was testing with even con, this toon is not planning to solo or for farming so ToHit boost will be plentiful from teaming, if I do have issues I will likely swap out the pet as mentioned. In fact I'm tempted to do this anyway...

2008 called and asked for its fire mastery back

Ice mastery on dominators is incredibly powerful and nearly always worth taking unless you have thematic reasons

Sleet alone makes it the mastery of choice for informed players. I run it on my Mind/Fire/Ice permadom main and it’s a game changer. Being able to provide -50% Def / -30% res to a whole mob benefits the entire team and even when solo is a great help in ensuring everything gets hit with control powers / softens up bosses. The very fast recharge on it means it’ll be pretty much permanently debuffing

If you’re going down the silly follow-the-herd route of building for defense, it has Ice Armour too which will contribute to your S/L def

Also, remover super speed and consume and choose vengeance instead. People die in teams all the time, very helpful to give a +35% def, +30% dam/acc buff for you and the team

------------

There are a number of design decisions - most notably the lack of Hasten - that tend to be peculiarities of my own. But a lot of what I'm doing with sets should help you hit the targets you're looking for.

Really enjoying this build - thanks for posting it.
I've got to admit, I was very skeptical - it skips a lot of conventional thinking, but in practice, it's awesome. It's far better than it looks on paper - also, very affordable!
If you want to see it in action, find me on Everlasting as Swampfire. Cheers - thanks again!
