Rad or Fire?

Rad is very good and can be built to have decent s/l/m def numbers quite easily. It also responds well to a pure res build achieving impressive numbers across the board. Fire is always going to lag behind in toughness but you do get more offensive tools. Procs can give rad two mini nukes though which can help out an aoe light primary.

Haven't done SS, but I'm working through a Sav/Rad build that's proving quite decent. She's not yet at 50 so a number of pieces aren't in place yet, but she's looking to be pretty beefy by the time all is said and done. Planned build hits low-mid 30's to S/L and almost 40 M, with solid resists behind them (excepting cold and psi). I'm sure there's plenty that could be tweaked to push those numbers without giving up too much elsewhere. Have a look and see if anything looks steal-worthy.

You might consider going with Tanker rather than Brute. Super Strength isn't a very good set for a Brute because its major feature - Rage - is something already provided by Fury.

 

Likewise, I wouldn't consider Radiation a very good Brute set. It's probably the premiere pure tanking set due to its broad-based resists. However, the lack of a damage aura and absence of a focused resist (for easy farming early on) makes it a bit painful on a Brute.

Interesting, I'll probably go the route of playing both through content and seeing which fits best in the field of play of my style! Thanks for the information!

I would say Rad Armour is one of the better Brute sets, even at low levels.

 

It helps a lot with endurance which can be a big problem at lower levels. It has good energy and s/l Resists which are very common. Slow and endurance drain resistance. 2 heals that both give you recovery and endurance with the right proc and heals and regen.

 

It has no damage aura but it does have 2 extra mini nukes. The aura it has can be procced to debuff resists and deal some damage whilst reducing defence and to hit. 

 

It has a useful T9.

 

I would say RA is in a good spot for Brutes.

Yup I'd agree with this. I never thought of my WM/Rad "weak" at any point. Gets a Recovery power very early, a decent heal at 16 and the Absorb shield at 28. Compared to Energy Aura, which took til level 35 to start feeling "complete" I found Rad great all the way through. My EA was gasping for End all the way to 35, felt defensively weak until the 30s too and didn't get a self-heal til 28. (Once my EA got to 35/36 and my IO slotting reached "complete" he became godly). 

 

With Rad you get a Nuke at 35 which, thanks to the fact you are a Brute and can increase the damage with Fury you can slot with 5 or 6 procs quite happily (I don't have the heal procced up at the moment. I should but I can't be bothered with another respec). I feel like the nukes "big boom" suits the gameplay better nowadays (which tends towards spikes of front loaded damage rather than the sort of DoT an aura gives).

I'm not convinced there is anything particularly wrong with superstrength on brutes either. No more than there is on tanks at any rate. The damage bonus from rage may be less pronounced but the more the merrier and it's not like fury+rage is any danger of capping you out. And the wonderful tohit bonus it gives you works just fine on either AT. Taking it on a brute allows you drop the truely dreadful tier one too.
