Battle Axe/Ninjitsu - The second best Unicorn.

Nemu

Recommended Posts

According to homecoming stats this combo is second last behind Ice/SR in popularity. This makes it even cooler than my super stronk and pretty Titan/Energy Aura. So now I'm like super mega cool. Hold your applause and adulation please... Please..

10/10 would recommend, just because. And if you are conflicted about theme do what I did - a firefighter gal who time traveled to cim and used her skills with a fire axe to defend herself from the Cim traitors and then time traveled again and learned the way of the ninja so now she's a ninja firefighter.

Here, since I'm so super mega cool I'll even share a build with you

I took mine to 50 following a natural concept, so just ninja run + shinobi to get around. It's not the fastest but it'll do in the world of TTs and mission tps. In combat the un-suppressed movement is very nice with CJ, you can clear most vertical obstacles in mission maps without too much trouble. I'm just going to pretend energy torrent is water from my fire hose for my firefighter.

Axe is an underplayed scrapper primary, hence my recommendation. It's a clone of mace, except all lethal and all kd/ku. The AoEs are good, the hits feel crunchy and satisfying. All the axe powers have a chance to KD/KU and that means 2 things - FF procs galore as you see in my build, and it's decent mitigation. I went all in on KD/KU and took energy torrent for more KD. In addition, /Nin can softcap without a whole lot of investment so that means more room for procs in attacks which diversify damage types, as you can see in my build.

Ninjitsu on scrappers is very good, handles hami on LGTF very well because of the unresistable self heal and self end tool. The latter also offsets the end usage due to proc slotting on attacks and having to depend more on tactics/FA for additional to-hit. Slows are going to be trouble for Ninjitsu but that's solved with my build with the FF procs and the winter set slotting that offers 100% slow resistance.

I also found hasten unnecessary. Is it nice? probably, but do I need it? nope. None of the powers in my toolkit have exceedingly long recharge times where hasten makes a meaningful difference. Plus the FF procs are a nice alternative for bursts of recharge without yet another click that I have to manage.

So that's my breakdown. It's a rare breed not due to effectiveness but due to theme.

I have a mace/ninja and I really feel like /ninja is overtuned. Not that I'm complaining mind you, but it easily covers pretty much every need, with the bonus of extra movement. Also, the KB protecc is on an auto power, which is super sweet.

Anyone have a new build for axe/ninja?

I think I'm building one of these next and this is my first draft. I haven't played Nijitsu before but I have a couple Axe toons and really love the set!

It's a leveling build so no purps/superiors/incarnates. There are couple spots to swap purps in for extra recharge after 50 but it'll cost a little s/r resist.

I'm starting to play this a little. How are you overcoming all the end usage? Is hitting kyoyo enough with the 3 aoes firing often ?

I put together a build because this looks like a very fun combo and no BA for Stalkers 🙂

I have never leveled a scrapper to 50 so unsure about the slotting for the ATOs. I purposefully overcapped positional defenses in case of debuffs (52-53%) and added 60% debuff resistance to recharge and speed. Lots of endo recovery due to high endo usage between toggles and attacks.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

This was my favorite character for a long time.

It's optimised for comfort and flexibility over anything else.
- full attack chain available by lvl 21 exemplared
- plenty of endurance between Kyoyo, CP and Retsu

- can run Retsu on a 3 minutes up 2 minutes down rotation
- Barrier + Kyoyo handle Retsu crashes with ease

- 100% slow res

ROTATIONS
ST: Cleave -> Swoop* -> Gash* -> Chop
AoE: Cleave -> Pendulum* -> Axe Cyclone*

"*" are under the effect of the Critical Strikes proc, roughly half of the time

Thanks nihilii I'm going to try it out.

Leveled him during the Halloween TOT event and there wasn't an updated build for this combo since the axe changes.  Changed the order some as It's not available in game as is since the change. Seems fun.

Would of liked a FF in it but an old quote from Arcanville was, "you only need enough recharge for your attack chain" keeps me from changing much.

My curiosity has been piqued, and I'm a fan of your builds, @nihilii, but I can't get this datachunk to open with Mids 3.6.6. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?

Holy necro! This build is no longer super cool because of the BA rework. If you want to be super duper cool you should really make a staff/regen brute with whirlwind.

A few comments:

Kismet in retsu means you won't get the benefit until you have the power at 49. Put it in a toggle that you can get early game.

Full Gaussian set goes into build up not tactics. The build up proc fires much more reliably in build up and the set also benefits build up recharge. Tactics is a one slot wonder and you can splurge a cyto in it at best.

Kyoyo, despite being a click, can solve your end problems. This means you don't need to go the conventional way of slotting health/stamina with uniques. It comes down to personal comfort of relying on a click for endurance every 20-30 seconds vs the standard miracle/numina/passive slotting, but I prefer to squeeze a few more set bonuses into a fully slotted kyoyo. Edge case where kyoyo is superior to passive endurance gain - Hamidon. The endurance gain by kyoyo is not suppressed by mito blasts (nor the heal from kuji sha).

No slow resist. Ninjitsu is almost like fire armor or regen. The clicks are integral to your survival. If you have the budget I highly recommend getting more slow resist via winter IOs. That also opens up opportunity to re-tune the build and add more procs.

Speaking of procs, this build doesn't really need hasten unless you are trying to get maximum uptime on Retsu and alternate that and other godmodes/incarnates for a specialized end game build. A good density of FF procs can be an alternative to just cramming hasten into every single build and it's one less click to manage since you'll most likely be putting Kuji rin on auto.

If you really want to be goofy you can make any battle axe build a hover blaster build like I did with kinetic melee here . I know @Yomo Kimyata has a soft spot for BA blasting.

An updated build for i27 p5 doesn't look all that different from the original post. A few powers get shuffled around but their properties and how they can be slotted remains the same.

Ugh, don't get me started!  The new battle axe is so overpowered!  I'll have to dig up my rant on one of your old posts, but yes, battle axe/ninja makes a ridiculous hover blaster.  thanks for reminding me -- I had to find mine, which is currently around lvl 30.

I'm not there yet. and I actually anticipate this being endurance hungry.  Currently looking at Body mastery.

Yes, but you don't really need that many FF procs, in my opinion.  In my standard play, I just put one in Pendulum and one in Axe Cyclone.  I find that since the proc has a chance to proc on each hit, and since I'm knee deep in enemies, it will generally proc.  I also only take 5 attacks from Axe:  Chop, Pendulum, Swoop, Axe Cyclone, Cleave.

Hmm, odd! It opens for me on Mids 3.6.6.

There were 2 misplaced powers (picked at incorrect levels) because I used the older Mids back when the Battle Axe buffs rolled out. So I fixed that now. Let me know if this chunk works any better:

Got it! I was trying to use the legacy import instead of the datachunk import. Thanks for modernizing the build and reposting it. You squeezed in more resistance than I expected in this...do you use Conserve Power after Retsu drops?

Indeed! CP after Retsu is useful to counter the 20 seconds of no recovery. I find with Kyoko alone you can end up retoggling and yet manage to drain yourself dry again if you start fighting, or find yourself uncomfortably low on end regardless. CP lets you carry on; and, incidentally, if you cycle Retsu nonstop you will only have a ~30s window without CP, after which Retsu's recovery helps.

I also cycle CP in general situations. In non-Retsu mode (as one does not necessarily want to *always* use it), it's pretty much required for this build lest Kyoko is used so often it cuts into animation time. Even during Retsu, the end bar can drain slightly, so CP gives 90 seconds of infinite endurance during which no Kyoko is required either.

My loose modus operandi is essentially, I attack until the end bar is around half then 1) use CP if available 2) use Kyoko if CP is down 3) sometimes use Retsu solely for endurance modification, it's nice to get a 3 minutes boost in just one click!

Just tried to open in 3.6.6 and gives data error...something I'm missing with the import?

##### Ignore this, sorry! I was using the old CTRL+I import method (/smh). Thank you!
