Gather the Shadows: a Dark Miasma Primer for Masterminds

Force Redux

Recommended Posts

Alternate Build:

Here is my current more expensive build. This includes the addition of Hami-Os (which are useful, but not necessary, as Demons/Dark can run very nicely on SOs/Basic IOs). But once you're well-funded, they can help save slotting on the pets.

I avoided slotting all six of the Superior ATO sets broken up 3 ways in order to get +30% global and went with a 2-piece in Demon Prince for just 10% global, as I really find the extra global is not terribly necessary at the expense of more efficient slotting of the pet summon powers.

As usual, I take Corruption late in my builds mostly for the Ranged Defense set bonus from Thunderstrike, but also because Dark keeps you busy enough that it can wait. There are MANY good powers in the first 30 levels of Dark Miasma that I always feel Corruption can wait in the bigger picture.

I dropped Group Fly in this build for Oppressive Gloom, though I myself have Group Fly (helpful in some TFs like Silver Mantis or some vertical maps to prevent jumping and aggroing demons). But I realize I'm the oddball and so I put OG in here, because it stacks nicely with Howling Twlighty for stunning bosses.

Attention was paid to maintain a decent EndRed for Demon Prince, as he's usually sucking down his blue bar on longer fights.

I've begun to follow the old advice of slotting a Celerity Stealth IO into Sprint, which saves me a slot for elsewhere. This build also still has one enhancement slot left over as a result, feel free to put it wherever you wish. Slotting some Acc/Rech into Hell on Earth wouldn't be a bad choice, to get that buff to be more effective rather than a pure slot mule.

Incarnates:

I ended up speccing out of Reactive Interface for doubling down on more -ToHit and some -Regen with Diamagnetic. The -ToHit stacks up easily with the Demon/Fluffy cones and acts as a second version of Fearsome Stare (about 20% in total). Honestly, Interface is so good for MMs, I don't think you can go wrong anywhere, but I am on a Diamagnetic kick of late, and find it super helpful for most of my characters in overall gameplay.

Excellent break-down of Dark!!

My main is Necro/Dark and people are always surprised to see me solo +4/8 content faster than brutes can. Those Scrapper Grave Knights are no joke!

I'll be using this post as my go-to for explaining Dark from now on lol.

I'd like to see the build, if you don't mind.  A write up for the Necro/ set like this one does for /Dark would be ideal, but I get that not everyone wants to be a guide writer.  Just a /buildsave file would be helpful; you don't need it in Mids format.  Thanks for any info you can share!

I can absolutely share my build. I'll post it hopefully by tonight.

I'd be happy to, but I'm not really MIDS user and I have no idea how to export it lol. So here's some screens and notes.

Notes:

1. ANYTHING less than lvl 50 or attuned is a proc.

2. I don't proc toggles like Darkest Night (except for Oppressive Gloom, proc that out!). I find that they don't really trigger enough to be meaningful for my playstyle.

3. Mark of Supremacy goes in Zombies because (a) they need the accuracy and damage, (b) the don't need recharge.

4. Soulbound Allegiance in Grave Knights (except Rech/Acc for the -res proc) because THEY DO ALL YOUR DAMAGE... like a TON.

5. Command of the Mastermind in Soul Extraction because (a) it is the best pet set for recharge and (b) they do not need the +acc as much at zombies do.

6. Lich: honestly I don't think the set you use really matters much in the Lich, but that doesn't mean the Lich isn't critical to the build! Just be sure to get all the pet auras, and I personally find clouded senses proc to do well.

7. Dark Servant: I try to slot juuuuust enough recharge to make sure he's perma, and that's about it. The rest should be focused on -tohit, heals, and damage procs. With enough bonuses and 2 -rech in Haste, you should not be slotting ANY -recharge in Dark Servant. Around 130% recharge redux with double slotted haste active should do it.

8. Patron powers: I did this for shits and giggles. But what I will say is that the KD proc in soul tentacles should not be underestimated. ALSO the -tohit proc in Oppressive Gloom is very strong for stacking. I am sure there are other patron pool sets that will do well.

9. Rotation: The name of the game is -tohit. The more enemies you can get with Fearsome Stare, Oppressive Gloom, and Darkest Night the better. You also need good accuracy because your heals require a hit check, for this reason Fearsome Stare is 6 slotted. AND YES, I INTENTIONALLY ADDED THE +TOHIT PROC. I get asked that a lot... lol. That +tohit proc fires EVERY TIME if you hitting a large group. So.... Fearsome Stare -> Twilight Grasp, in combination with -def from Grave Knights, Defense builds don't stand a chance. Yes, I do PvP with this build, but usually only arenas.

10. Incarnates are

Alpha: Musculature Radial Paragon --- this has -tohit AND +damage. There's really no better option for this build....

Hybrid: Support Core Embodiment --- I think all MMs take this, it's great.

Lore: Demons Core Superior Ally --- Really doesn't matter much, but they have great -tohit synergy. Radial is also GREAT but is less damage, more -tohit--a tankier option, but I don't find a need for it.

Interface: Spectral Radial Flawless Interface or Diamagnetic Core Flawless Interface--- Diamagnetic is extremely tanky, spectral will do more damage.

Destiny: Clarion Core Epiphany --- The big weakness to this build is cc. Clarion is CRITICAL for it.

Judgement: Whatever you like, I went with Void for the theme and because I'm often in piles of enemies for Oppressive Gloom.

Here's a short video showing this on +4/8 cim mobs. Seeing a build is fine and dandy, but I like to see them in "person". I tried to avoid Judgment and Lore pets as those drastically increase damage.

Here's my current end-game Necro/Dark build. The MM is one small purple from Def Cap (32% in in-game numbers, not Mid's) and with all the -ToHit, rather safe.

I have had a number of Inferface choices in the past, but I settled on Diamagnetic, which debuffs regen on those tougher targets, as well as adds insult to injury with another 20% -ToHit, so that I often don't have to use Fearsome Stare or Darkest Night unless we get an ambush or aggro extra mobs/patrols.

Here's a short video showing this on +4/8 cim mobs. Seeing a build is fine and dandy, but I like to see them in "person". I tried to avoid Judgment and Lore pets as those drastically increase damage.

I'm getting strong GW2 necro vibes from the way you color your powers. Very nice.

Soul storm has to have one of the coolest looking VFX in this game.

Very nice. And agreed, always great to see builds visually.

Haha TOTALLY busted! I loved gw2 necro until the gw2 game loop kinda burned me out.

Fair enough. I only got into GW2 recently over the past year, but my Necro probably has the most play time of my other alts so I definitely recognized that dark green/black palette ;).

I don't know how I didn't come across this post sooner. Amazing amount of quality information, thank you @Force Redux.

I am using your guide for the dark portion of slotting, but I am unsure about beasts(which is the way I'd like to go). I read somewhere that their attacks are more useful then the other sets so that means less choice of powers elsewhere.

Also, you can't slot the defense and resistance uniques in their level 18 ability so I am unsure what to take out of each of the beasts slots to make room for it.

Should one consider taking the attacks or would you be "fine' skipping them on beasts? And where is the best place for the uniques?

Maybe that's too many questions lol. Sorry. It's my first real attempt at a mastermind because this guide inspired me, especially the little intro for beasts/dark.

Hi! I'm glad you found the post useful 🙂!

The attacks are good for building stacks of pack mentality, I recommend at least one of them.

You can fit in all six unique IOs into the three pet summoning powers with creative slotting, but concentrate on the Defense ones first.

I can try to post a build later this weekend if you like.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents as a Necro/Dark main. I play pvp and solo +4x8 without the need for fighting pool powers or sorcery armor. The dark -tohit is EXTREMELY strong, especially when slotted for it and musculature alpha.

But to answer your question, definitely high resistance and here's why: With the -tohit all mobs and players (unless they spam yellows) are going to have a 5-15% chance of hitting you (depending on how you slot and play) even if you don't slot ANY defense. 5% is also the minimum allowed hit chance, it CANNOT get lower chance than that. Additional defense will not go a very long way due to the high synergy with -tohit and will only be useful against very very high acc.

Hit me up in game and I can show you live numbers, if you're interested! @Nexros for global

Thanks @Nexros, I'm only on my phone.

But I'll say this, I like about 25 Ranged Defense on /Dark, combined with -ToHit, then pump up resistances. Shadowfall and Demons gives a good base for building on.

Oh yeah, 25 is pretty high, but not too high. Will definitely cover your bases. But that's readily reached using shadow fall, maneuvers, and bonuses and without the need for weave. Your minions will be much high def than you due to the pet procs

I understand now, so basically if their acc is low because of -tohit, high defense would not be useful as they aren't hitting often. I don't do PVP so I don't have to worry about players spamming yellows. Pretty sure most mobs don't have rediculously high acc unless it's an AV with their resistances. May try build 2 then go from there, I'm thinking of replacing Soul Tentacles for Soul storm and drop vengeance for something else..

Miasma Masterclass for Masterminds.

How intriguing.

Most impressive.

My own Demons/Miasma alt was built and then parked.  Then I came back to it recently.  (I never got past the Mez thresh hold.  So I wondered what all the fuss was about on Miasma on Defenders, Controllers, Mastermind.  It seemed to have potential but upon early to mid-level you were vulnerable to the mez and dead errant roll of the dice from certain mobs.  And I never rated the heal on it either but I did like the Tar pool.)

But once you do persevere and get Miasma to the late game and build 'on the fly' then it becomes a very robust debuff set.

My aims were to cross the cap on S+Lethal.

And push all defence positions to 30%+.  (Only melee fell a little short.)

To boost these defence numbers further I'll be going Support (left side.)

I rarely get mezzed due to the resists I have but when I do, it's not for long.  (Yet to die from being mezzed but I have had occassion to use breakers.)  However, the game has a way of mezzing you when you least expect it.  So Clarion it is.  As in the higher content you'll get those mobs that will give you the 'So you're a miasma, eh?' treatment.  And I want to give the 'I sure am...' treatment back.

The set is very end hungry with .65 end chokers.  I've tried to put some set built stamina bonuses in there, plus all the usual end proc' suspects.  Added the end' redux (I think this is what Dark Miasma needs...) set in the dark stealth toggle.  I only use primary attacks to finish off the odd stubborn mob near the end of the battle.  Now finding peace with my role as directing traffic and debuffing for the beginning of a fight.  It's taken me 50 levels to realise if I wade in and attack, attack, attack!!!  Then I'll just empty my end bar.

As for Incarnates.  I'll go with Alpha Musculature Radial.  I was going for intuition radial.  However, the slow and ranged?  Not sure how much I'd get out of that, change wise.  So you've got the damage and the debuff?  I'd rather Musc' Radial.  You get similar to intuition and I can help boost the endurance further (still slight lingering end issues eg. with using the Mez Rez Bomb) emptying almost half the end bar even with an SO of end redux in there.)  I do carry blues to offset that as I cast.  But I think getting the Support core left side choice will give boosts to dam, end redux (will stack with my Musc' Radial Alpha choice...to further nail the stamina) and most convincingly is a further boost to my defence build.  Which hinges on that Scorpion shield which allowed me all the power choices I wanted.  (I'm keenly aware of the resist based and 'Dark Patron' builds posted here.  However, from what I can see, I'm bringing something a bit different to the table.)  I was going Ageless for the destiny but how can I be a Mastermind with a straight face if I don't take Clarion?  Helps with knbk for Pets?  Melee radial allegedly helps with status but if it's only up 50% of the time then why bother.  Eeeking out further damage and debuff?  Degen' seems a good interface to take.  The kind of effect you'd expect from 'Demons.'  As for Lore.  I'll see if they have any demon choices... 🙂  That or the Banished Mega Demons.  Which have debuff amongst their attributes.

I've taken note of the role of the Twilight Grasp as an offensive debuff weapon.  And use this aggressively to stack the HPs debuff so the attacking demon hordes can put the alpha boot into a mob and they melt like buttter (yes, with three ts...)  I've used the Howling power on EBs during the AV arc.  And then spam Grasp on top.  They don't stand a chance as Demons plus Hell goes all 'Star Wars' on their posterior.

Tactics?

1. Fear Stare.  Feared folks buy seconds to lay down the debuffs.  And that's what you need to debuff.  Time.  Miasma is great but it does take time to put down some of the slow casting boat anchors.  Fear is one of the most powerful attacks in the game from a tactics point of view.  They're held in fear or limited in retaliation.  Time to weave dark magic.  🙂

2. I then put in the Fear Hold for the lieu or senior member of the group.  Apex of group then gets eaten by my demon shock troops.  The hold, seemingly missing from some builds is a crucial power to me.

3. I put the darkness toggle on the held mob.  (I didn't know it still worked on ded mob.)  Minus their acc and they wander around slowly.  Enjoying the mountain of - to hit with the substantial def position numbers with the smashing def' capped.

4. Put the Tar Down.  (I'm not getting touched at all by the mobs at all.  No attacking.  Just using the debuffs offensively for the Demons to incite.)  Any damage that gets through is severely diluted as they're slowed to death and eaten by nimble Demons.)

5. I now lay in with the Heal spamming to -regen.  Buttter.  Which the Demons melt.

5 steps to hell, eh?

If there is anything significant (Boss or EB, or AB?  Howling puts the smack down on alpha from me.  Then as above.)

I'll try and post my build.  (now posted) I'm pretty happy with it bar the incarnates yet to fit.  I'll be following my demon build with great interest.

Caveat of my build.

The one caveat are the Pet Uniques noted in the builds so far posted.  I'm giving up quite a bit of demon numbers there, I suspect.  I'd need a bit of creativity to keep my build as is and to fit such appetising Uniques...?

My first build as I level build.

I was somewhat grasping around for Masterminds in general (I've done one or two, Robots, Neco to late 30s and though, 'Is that it?  Usually feeling the castor attacks like the gun and the whip were slightly naff.  (But I did enjoy my Beast Mastermind on live.  Thought that was great.  I have that one to Lvl 50 with Nature Affinity.  But it's not set built.)

Light Bulb Moment.

When someone said.  You need to put the AT sets in the build to stop the pets dying it was illumination.  After that the pets stopped dying instantly upon attacking.  Far more robust.  So I made the priority in the build to set cap each Pet with the aim of pushing towards the defence objectives of defence and recharge.  I also prioritized the slotting of the heal, the miasma pet (ofc) and the signature powers of the dark stealth and the -to hit anchor.  Strangely, I didn't have many slots left over for the strategically important fear aoe or fear hold which have got by with minimal slotting.  I couldn't see a way around that as my slots began to evaporate.  I did want to sneak 3 more slots into weave, the Scorpion and Man's.  But I just ran out.

This is the 1st time reaching L50 with a Mastermind with a satisfactory build as I go approach.  (I normally gauge the SO build, get that right, understand the AT then build around L45-50.)  It's now seeing what the Incarnates bring to the table.

One other small thing.  Musc' Radial seems to boost some resistance numbers also?  We'll see.

Regards,

Demon Girl.

I simply picked up Evasive Maneuvers as a slot mule for LoTG. No real change

I now recommend Group Fly with the buffs it received making it quite useful, and dropping OG.

Gather the Shadows: A Dark Miasma Primer for Masterminds

I understand now, so basically if their acc is low because of -tohit, high defense would not be useful as they aren't hitting often. I don't do PVP so I don't have to worry about players spamming yellows. Pretty sure most mobs don't have rediculously high acc unless it's an AV with their resistances. May try build 2 then go from there, I'm thinking of replacing Soul Tentacles for Soul storm and drop vengeance for something else..

This is correct. In +4x8 missions (with only Fearsome Stare and Darkest Night) PvE has around 5-9% chance to hit me and 10-50% 5-20% chance to hit my minions. This is BEFORE maneuvers and dark fluffy-face, and only accounting for the enhancement procs on the minions (10% defense or so). Keep in mind that it is not possible to get under 5% due to game mechanics. This means that stacking 30% defense will do almost nothing for your survivability if you have strong -tohit like Dark Miasma does. I also only 3 slot Darkest Night, and 4 slot Fearsome Stare... so I have no idea why anyone would run any kind of defense at all on a Dark Miasma MM. The only situation defense would come in handy  is during very large encounters where the aggro cap will force mobs onto you that are not within your debuff zone (this can happen occasionally, but is rare), I have solo'd ITF +4x8, albeit extremely slowly, including the Dwarf surge at the end of the first mission. For this reason, ALWAYS go resist with Dark Miasma. You'll just get a lot more bang for your buck, so-to-speak.

The minions will always be easier to hit due to the level shift disadvantage, but this is also true when slotting defense. You will never get better than 45% on T1, 34% on t2, and 27% on t3 minion when facing +4 mobs with a +1 level shift, even if you stack defense. This is because, again, game mechanics dictate that each level CRITTERS (your minions) are lower than the enemy, a base of 9% chance to hit is added back by default. This is one of the arguements made against MMs being strong end-game soloers, but it can be effectifely offset with resists and heals.

Edit: after running in-game tests against +4 bosses, I'm unsure how the math is working after all. My minions are also seeing extraordinarily low hit chances, more than I thought the game allowed simply because they're lower level, but this doesn't seem to be following the 9% I assumed was accurate. In actual combat, I'm seeing similar numbers as me (5-9%) on t3 and only 1-2% higher chances for each lower tier going as high as 15% on t1 minions... I'm unsure why this is, but I'm not complaining!

I've found the 30% + very useful.  (Pop a luck inspire and you're about at the cap.)  I find in CoH, the numbers can say one thing and the in game situations can say another.

For example.  The proof in the pudding is outlier cases such as Master Illusionists or Malta.  (The latter absolutely hammer you.)  They seem to get through.  And I'd end up frozen in ice or held.  Prior to picking up the Incarnate powers.  +3 or +4.  (and x8) where the dice rolls are abundant.   'I'm a mastermind...'  says Demon Girl.  Yeah?  'But you're held in a block of ice.'  Says Malta Gunslinger.  Ergo 'Clarion.'  I've not been 'as bothered' since.

I find a good defence build backed with decent resistant numbers seems to work great.  With -to hit, it's gold.

The Incarnates have helped.  Of course, the level shifts.  The Alpha Radial Musc' and the Hybrid Support being notable stand outs and the mandatory Destiny Clarion.

The icing on the cake for me, was Hybrid Support.  It really takes the pressure off in peak combat situations.  Not only to you get incarnate approaching def' numbers but that -50-ish end reduction makes a massive difference to the endurance heavy miasma set (and those boat anchor end toggles.)

With the lashings of defence and the - to hit.  Miasma delivers a 'Masterful' experience.

There's always a chance to try a resistance based build.  (The Dark shield on top of the res' numbers I have would be a compelling choice.)  And idea of putting the uniques in the pets is still something I haven't tried.

Currently experimenting with Degeneration vs the -to hit Interface.  One will seemingly kill faster, the other 'seems' to offer better tankiness.  Still testing.  I've been in situations where my pets have been 'alpha hit' by Malta and I've been last Demon Girl standing.  I thought I'd be a gonner.  But I'm amazed that I could turn around a fight with a lone Master Mind.

The weak link in the build seems to be the pets.  They're better with the buffs on them.  (Does Hybrid extend its support to your pets?  They seem to last longer when Support is running) and I spam the Heal anyhow to absorb the alphas whilst they munch through the mobs.  That and dropping Howling on the apex of the mob.

Anyone who hasn't tried Demon/Miasma?  It's a compelling Master Mind.

Demon Girl.
