Illusion/Time/Primal build looking for advices/fine tweaks

Hello everybody.

 

First quote before start: I apologize for my bad english because it's not my native tongue but I hope to do my best to do this readable. Thanks in advance.

 

I am a huge fan of thematic builds, then I planned a controller based on the old "Mandrake the Magician" and the modern "Doctor Strange". I chose Illusion/Time/Primal and then I searched on forums to start my build. I found some nice builds and I tried to adapt them to my roleplaying concept and I finished with this:

My main goals are to get the perma PA to be able to debuff and damage mobs soloing and support with perma FARSIGHT, heals and debuffs targets when grouped.

 

I'm open to sugestions to improve this build, I'd like to mantain my chose powers but I'd not hesitate to change if the suggestion is a remarkable upgrade.

I'm on mobile so I can't view the build in mids right now, but I noticed you took the fighting pool. I think this isn't needed. If you're going to have Perma power-boosted Farsight, that alone should put you at or near the Defcap. Just a preliminary thought, I'll take a closer look when I'm home from work!

  • You've got Blind slotted with 6 procs but no accuracy. Probably OK at lvl 50 once you have Tactics and Farsight, but you'll probably need to slot accuracy while leveling. 
  • I don't recommend slotting damage procs in Deceive. Normally Deceive is non-aggroing, but the proc generates aggro.
  • Slowed Response needs accuracy.
  • 2x recharge in Power Boost. 
  • You want Clarion Radial, not Core. Radial boosts secondary effects and you can stack it with Power Boost on Farsight.

Thanks Uun for your answer.

  • It’s a lvl 50 build after a respec, not a levelling build. Blind with six procs on it has 225’3% accuracy with Tactics and Farsight active. I don’t know if that accuracy is enough but I feel it OK.
  • I can see the point about the damage proc in Deceive. Moved the slot from Deceive to Power Boost to get more recharge on it.
  • Slowed Response with Achilles’ Heel enh has 204’9% accuracy (Tactics and Farsight active). Changed Achilles’ to Analyze Weakness Accuracy/Defense Debuff to get 246’6% accuracy now. I think it’s enough.
  • Power Boost gets 2x recharge now.
  • I am doubting about Clarion Core or Radial. I know Radial boosts secondary effects but my build has a big hole on status protection (IMHO). Radial doesn’t cover that for the full buff duration like Core, leaving my toon with 30 seconds without good status protection. I’d take Radial If anybody gives me good advice about how to cover the status protection hole.

I'm a bit late with this, apologies! After taking a look, I'm a bit concerned about your total lack of AoE damage. But if your plan is to sit back and take pot shots at things while your pets and teammates do the heavy lifting, that's OK! But as I intoned in my previous post, if you're going to be doing that, you shouldn't need so much personal defense. You have soft-capped (or close to it) defenses even BEFORE Farsight... which is amazing, but it's overkill, given that you, well, have that power. You also look like you might have some endurance issues; your end consumption is ~2/EpS. Your recovery is ~3.3/EpS. That doesn't give you a lot of room to recover from using spells and attacks (though this rating doesn't account for the two +End procs)! Another problem I noticed: You chose Agility Core Paragon, which enhances Recharge Speed. This is a problem, because you seem to rely a lot on procs. The issue is that if you have recharge enhancement in a power (Which is what the Alphas are, they're enhancements, not bonuses), it will reduce the Procs' chances of going off, making them superfluous.
 

To that end, I'm going to remove some slotting and powers that will lower your defenses, and increase your recovery (Fighting pool, I'm getting rid of the Fighting pool! I'm putting the Sorcery pool in it's place, mostly for flavor). It'll be a bit more involved since you'll have to remember to recast Farsight at soon as it's available. I'll try to eek out some more recharge for you, too, since I'm removing your lotg mule and swapping your Alpha to Vigor Radial Paragon (Acc, End Redux, Confuse/Sleep/Fear duration).

You're probably going to wanna to spam Power Blast. Why? Because I put the Force Feedback: Chance for Recharge proc in there. You're fine without it, but it'll give you some wiggle room with your recharge timers. Also, you won't see it unless you hover over an enhancement, but I also put a +5 on a few enhancements, specifically, any plain Recharge IOs. Enhancement boosters cost 1-2 mill a piece, but it's worth it! I also +5'd the set IOs in PA and CS that have a recharge component, mostly to shave a second or two off their recharge times. If you have the inf, just +5 everything that isn't a proc or global enhancement. Trust me, it's worth it!

 

I'm not confident that this is a "Better" build. We lost defense, a touch of recharge and some always-on resistance for recovery, utility, and a LOT of occasional resistance (see Rune of Protection). It's more of a spit-ball build based on your previous choices (again, sans Fighting). If you want a build with more AoE and utility, let me know and I'll share my own build that I use!

Hey EmperorSteele, thanks a lot for your answer.

 

I'm going to study it and I'll try to rid off the fighting pool to control the endurance issues. I don't understand why the recharge time affects to procs. I read about it on other posts but I cannot figure it. I like the agility core because I think it suits fine on my build concept then I'm thinking about to change the blind IOs but I don't know what to choose for it.

 

I'll post another test build soon.

My basic observations:

 

- The auras are not that useful in phantasm. Many of your pets are already invulnerable, and you provide plenty of protection to them even beyond that. Phantasm benefits greatly from the smashing proc in explosive strike, as it applies to every one of its attacks. The soulbound allegiance buildup proc is also pretty good in most controller pets. More damage slotting here would be good as well, perhaps switching the expedient aura for one of the IOs in set that enhance damage so you can keep the nice global recharge bonus. 

 

- The lack of aoe, as Steele mentioned, is not ideal. It may well be your speed to just team up with others and focus your ST blasts on hard targets, which is fine. It will be a very slow solo character however. Energy Torrent has a quick enough recharge that it could be a solution all by itself if you can fit it in. Also a great opportunity for FFeedback shenigans.

  •  My personal targets to consider dropping to pick this up would be either: Deceive, Superior Invis, or even Power Blast. You can easily make a ST attack chain out of spectral wounds and blind with the amount of +recharge you have. 

 

- I agree that Delayed Response needs some enhancement love. It's a great power. Achilles -res and a lady gray damage proc are a nice combo, along with one or two acc/rech slots from whatever set.

 

- Chrono shift has a very strong recovery component, better than stamina. It also provides a straight up end injection. If you wish to enhance your end, just slotting the power for endmod will be more effective than a performance shifter proc.

- I know that Phantom Army are invulnerable but Phantasm is not. I could remove all the auras from Phantasm and adding explosive strike proc and other IO from same set to get a bit more of damage. Soulbound allegiance buildup is set on Phantom Army (could it get a proc chance on every atack of every pet from PA? I don't know but it would be nice...)

 

- I agree with the lack of AoEs does very slow solo but I don't care about that. I prefer to focus on hard targets to debuff and damage them mantain all other soft targets at bay with spectral terror, deceive and blind (I don't know if it's a good strategy but I think would be doable). I don't want Energy Torrent, I prefer Arcane Bolt despite FF chance + recharge is better if it hits on multiple targets. I prefer mantain Deceive (another pseudopet to help with control with a little risk to lost some inf), Superior Invis (defense and nice to run stealth missions fast) and Power Blast (ST damage).

 

- Delayed response is a very useful tool to debuff defense and resists from targets but I don't see how to add more enh slots on it without to break the build I post down here (If anybody can refine it I'd be very grateful)

 

- Hero Designer shows that Chrono Shift with a SO endurance mod gives less endurance recovery than it with performance shifter (chance + end). I don't know if it is true or not, but I'm going to mantain the performance shifter just in case (if it's not a bug, of course).

I am ready to be corrected, but I believe performance shifter, when slotted in a click power, is simply a chance for a one time pop of end. I'm not certain that it will continue checking for the duration of the power as it does in stamina, which is always on and checking every ten seconds.

 

I know that miracle and numina will definitely provide their bonuses for a good duration as long as you are regularly recasting the power, but I think performance shifter works differently. Would be interested in knowing for certain myself!

 

My main rationale for the low utility of pet auras for controllers is mostly that you are already providing good protection for them with your controls and buffs. Phantasm is also a ranged pet, which will keep them even safer. Given that yours is short on damage slotting, and would do well with the smashing proc, I would shift my slotting that direction.

 

I missed that the buildup proc was already in pa.  I'd definitely keep it there.

Phanty is REALLY squishy, though. Like, I dont even bother summoning him half the time because he dies so quick. So any way to buff his survivability probably isn't a bad idea.

Good single damage with plenty of single attacks and near perma Phantom Army (perma with Chrono Shift up or Arcane Bolt proc), good crowd control and debuffs (Slowed Response only 267'9% accuracy... But I don't figure how to put more slots to enhance it without mess other powers), more survivable Phantasm, less but great defenses and resists yet using Power Boost and Farsight on cooldown, good heals and better endurance gestion than before.

Only drawback is that I'll need more attention to cooldowns and play more actively, but I'll be more fun (I hope).

 

I'll start to check the build today and I'll put my feelings here. Of course, I'm open yet to any suggestion about this build.
