Most Unstoppable Tank

They wouldnt have rewrote dark or forced an issue to try to make tankers more like stalkers and you need to get that out of your head cause that wasnt in their decision then. And it's not part of what tanking is now.

Again, no evidence of that, you're projecting.  You're just a player, like me, you have no additional insights into the dev teams on live or the direction of tanking in general.  Things put in the game by the live team are more likely to be part of the plan than not.  Please don't tell me what to get out of my head, I'm not your child, you have no authority here, you're just another player like me.  You be concerned about what's in your head, not mine.

Take a deep breath, I'm not attacking you.  I don't care what is in your head.

So you really think they wanted to make tankers like stalkers then by giving tankers one toggle in one power that gave it a baseline stealth power?  That was their overarching reason for porting dark armor to tankers - was because of stealth in cloak of darkness?

Were you around when they ported it?

I was.

I've played since issue 3.   Not that it actually matters, you're just trying to weirdly assert dominance or something again.  You have no authority here.  You are attacking me, repeatedly, and your thinly-veiled condescension oozes out of every sentence you write.

You tell me to take a deep breath.  You have no authority here.  You be concerned with your breath, not mine.  If you want to tell me I'm wrong, tell me I'm wrong, but stop acting like you're coming from some place of authority.  You're not.  You can troll as hard as you want, it still doesn't make you any kind of authority.  At all.

As to this part, no, I never said that at all.  You're projecting again.  Stalkers weren't even a thing when stealth was introduced into the game, or when Dark Armor was.  I don't care about stalkers.   I'm talking about tankers.  I believe they ported Dark Armor purposefully, all of the powers in it included in that.  Stealth is a part of tankers the same way healing is, or any other minor effect repurposed into an incentive to play a powerset.  Anything else you're talking about isn't what I'm talking about.

Back in issue 3 (or maybe it was 4, can't recall) my bf at the time made an ill/kin controller so that I could play a Stone tanker.  I remember herding what seemed like hundreds of ninjas in the chimera map, so many that the fx engine stopped working and they'd kinda jump into each other and disappear, although they were technically still there they just wouldn't render or something. The caltrops spam was funny.

Simpler times, back then, the answer to the most unstoppable tanker.  Though still needed a kin for efficiency, so maybe invuln was still the key back then.  I hadn't played invuln at the time.

Look at page 2 on this topic - I rank them all with figures.  Current numbers.

This message is not specific to Tankers, or even Tankers with 'Stealth', but it has been on my mind recently:

I do wish that players who join TF PUGs would accept that not all AT are equivalent when it comes to "stealth to the end to fight the boss/click the glowie".

Some circumstances which initiate internal groaning are:

  • Squishies who get killed while trying a mad dash to the mission end
  • Aggro-magnets who wake up mobs that now block passageways for everyone else
  • Aggro-Magnets that draw more mobs into the end area (which only required a glowie click, or a limited number of enemies to defeat, or 10 seconds to Assemble the Team)

Writing only for myself: I don't care if the player has run the TF hundreds of times and knows which missions can be "sped"... if the player isn't playing an AT that can't do this... please don't try to force it.

Q: Why would I post this to a thread on the Tanker forum?

A: Tankers on a PUG typically (especially on lower level TFs/SFs) have powers that are best at staying with the group that can't stealth to a mission's end. Chill out with that first enemy group and collect some XP with the squishies who won't survive the aggro you would be tempted to leave behind.

Just voicing my own thoughts on the matter here, but...

Honestly, the "gogogogo" mentality, as well as the "lets schneek to the end!" playstyle is not one I particularly enjoy, and is a big turnoff to some group/lfg play. Not everyone has ran the TF before, or the mission we are on.

Personally I would rather go 1-2 spawns at a time, than just assume that -

1. Everyone has stealth.

2. Everyone "wants" to gogogo/speedrun it.

3. Everyone has done the TF before and is just on their weekly merit grind.

I have had people, zoom past me, run off by themselves, go splat, then rant at me as if it was somehow my fault. When I figure "they are playing how they want, if they pull all those then they must be able to handle it." The live and let live, or play and let play style is more my jam.

I don't begruge anyone who is in a rush, I get in a rush too. But usually I at least ask first, or say "hey, can we speedy this one?" before doing so. If they are fine with it, then lets go for it. But if a few people go "I'd rather not", then I dont.

Honestly, I think its a breakdown in communication and a difference in playstyles than what is "right vs wrong". To me, there is no "wrong" way to play. If its in the game, then its fair game. That said however, I think its a bit silly to expect everyone to enjoy the precise same way as you do in playing the game.

I would like to add that I get it. People are busy these days. I got things to do too, places to be. But I at least speak up first, before rushing ahead. And I certainly dont get on anyone else if the team goes a different direction. And last but not least, if the team is perferring the "gogogogo" play, and I am not, I just say thanks for the group and dip out. I can always find another, or start my own. I would rather look for a group that I enjoyed being with than be in one that I wasn't, and I think that would be fair to say for anyone.

Again, I am not saying that anyone is a bad player/playing incorrectly or any such nonsense if they do play that way. If its in the game, its fair to use. Heck I put stealth IOs on my slide power on every AT just in case I do want to sneak time to time. But I suppose it comes down to every players philisophy - do they do their own thing, regardless of the groups dynamic and makeup, or do they leave to find a group more to their liking, do they communicate, or do they just do as they like, other players be darned? Matter of politeness/courtesy I guess, or whatever one wishes to call it.

I don't think this is solely a tanker matter either.

Just my thoughts on the matter, and best wishes to everyone out there, both non-stealthys/speedsters, or plod-alongs!

TLDR - If I want to do something "different", I speak up. If the group is fine with it, then great. If not, I follow the pace of the group if I am enjoying myself, or I find another one if I am not.

If I'm running the arc, I announce my preferences. If I've joined an arc, I always ask how we are running it... if preferencess have not been shared.

My point is more about my frustration with characters that can't speed to the end without messing things up for most of the rest of the group. For example, an Invulnerable Tank can almost certainly survive getting to the final room of a map, but it is unlikely that they won't have woken up every mob along the way... and they may end up taking so many attacks that they cannot finish clicking a glowie or cast Assemble the Team.

I remember before auto sidekick a friend brought a lower level stone tanker to our weekly team. Most of us were on the usual rampage moving as fast as they could. .. So fast they missed defeating the mob the stone tank was holding; a mob 7 levels higher than the tank. He mentioned he could use some help killin 'em but there was no hurry; the mob wasn't hurting him either. Awesome tanking. I never made a Stone tank though; I couldn't bring myself to spend an hour on a good costume just to end up looking like the same rock monster as every other stone character. I may die in horribly twisted ways but I gotta look good doin' it.

Ok and dont take this personal but its like this - you can kick a baseball and it will roll just fine but you are supposed to hit it with a bat to get it go futher.  If you have fun with the first - its your baseball - have at it - you wont be faulted for it but dont expect to get a starting position on the Yankees (are they still good? - not a sports guy)

Tanking - universally accepted as grabbing agro to protect the team - that is THE universally accepted role of the tanker.  Not Tanker go stealth this map.  That would be a gameplay feature - that is perfectly fine and acceptable - but it is not - nor will ever be tanking - and on a tanker forum anyone new needs to understand fully what the tanker role is - because they may not know

Okay, last time I'm gonna address this topic.  The 'Tanker's role' is pretty well know by everyone by now.  Both CoH and WoW have been around long enough for one generation, DnD and other PnP games for the previous generation.  I've lived through both.  I know what a fucking 'tank' is supposed to do.  I know their role.  CoH in it's current incarnation simply doesn't need a Tank.  That role is not necessary.  How many times have you joined a team lately and not seen a Tank and thought 'Hmm, we need a tank'?  The answer is never.

Look, I love Tanks.  I love the idea of Tanks.  I actually miss the need for Tanks.  But that isn't the current reality for the current game.  Every time I hear one of you lecture that 'The Tankers role is' such and such I wanna scream.  You're pedantic fools.

Okay, slightly hyperbolic. The answer to 'we need a tank' is maybe 1% ot the time.

My friend why are you still beating this dead horse? we moved on like 2 days ago.  But good soap box!  thumbs up!

No role is needed but on a Sara Moore TF the tanker we had sure made it easier - no we didnt "need" it but he grouped things together much nicer to take out more effeciently - and was a good bit safer too for my scrapper to go nuts.

Council roflstomping yeah you dont need a tank - even a petless mastermind could pull that one off - but there is content where a tanker makes it more effecient.

So you are entitled to your opinions even if they are partly if not more than partly incorrect.

So.....:)

I have my lvl 50 tanker, he's a dk/dk/dk....not that! It means dark ya pervs.

Anywho, just finished io him out was running around Shark because that's were I hangout.

And lo and behold there's Scrapyard....so I run up to him and stand there...obviously taunting him...like ha ha you're a ghost you got killed by a fish...anyways.

I did not die...and I couldn't die, even when the others showed up and killed him, I didn't die, just kept his focus on me till the others beat him.

Not even a smidgen or hint of my health moving down, nope nada.

I was so pleased that I came up with a concept for another toon...but this time I rolled another tanker a Bio/EM. This one will take awhile because I have other projects and my dark tank to hold me over.

But oh so fun...yeah I can't defeat anything in a second but with the center of attention being me others can take care of it.

So thank you all for the insight, info, and what a tankers role is and still IS.

No reason to apologize, in all those responses I did garner nuggets of knowledge that formulated the info I needed.

I consider this thread a win for me, us, and other newbs just learning the ropes who might have the same questions.

So thank you.
