Can you reach them?

Recommended Posts

So, for most characters this won't be relevant. ūüôā

One of the things I liked (and still like, really) doing is getting creative in the ways to get to certain explore badges. Going to echo:galaxy and reaching Tank, with just Sprint, at best. (Hopping up the calf, back and shoulder of the statue.) Destined for Valhalla is not hard, in the least, just fun to run (or more like bunny hop) up the side of a building to get to. Some badges, of course, are designed to be unreachable without a travel power (or help) - like Top Dog on the top of the Atlas globe. You're not doing that with sprint.

And some, honestly, I thought were more reachable than they actually are, as far as I can tell.

If you check out the "Classic hero challenge" thread, you'll see some of us - who may be off our meds - are running characters as close to "issue 0 spec" as we can. Which means level 14 and a prerequisite for a travel power, no P2W vendor, no IOs and a bunch of other restrictions. (It's actually more fun than it may sound to some. Remembering how to get around some things "the old fashioned way" instead of just being able to bypass or ignore them has added some spice of its own.) In it, recently, two badges were mentioned - Old Fashioned (which, yes, wasn't an original Faultline badge, but just fits these characters so it's a popular one to snag) and Towering Inferno - that, with just sprint, are apparently unreachable.

I had to go check them out myself. For a lot of vertical building movement, there are often little protuberances (ledges, window sills, etc) that you can just catch as you hop your way up, even with sprint. Or there's something else you can use (a vehicle top, a dumpster, that sort of thing) to hop up from. I thought the donut shop Old Fashioned is on top of had a ledge like that where the neon ring is - nope. Smooth. Even the tree in back didn't help.

Faultline? Towering Inferno. Another one I thought it'd be a long jump up a series of ledges... but the majority of that building is smooth sided. Even getting as high as you can (the billboard up the road a bit) doesn't help.

Yes, I was actually surprised. And intrigued. ūüôā SO:

- Are there other explore badges like this that are "impossible" to get to without a travel power/P2W power or assistance that you can think of? (Like the one in the first Prae zone, as well - I forget what it's called.)

- Do you have a way (again, no travel power, no P2W power, no "have a friend teleport you!" - just sprint) to reach any of these, with just sprint?

No, I don't want any of this changed. With the modern game, early travel powers and P2W, using those to reach these is - again - trivial. This is more "who can reach what" and "who has clever ways of getting to these."

Please, if you feel the need to shoot down someone's suggestion by saying "It's not worth the devs time," don't. The devs are big boys and girls and can determine for themselves what is or is not worth their time, they don't need you to do it.

With just Sprint?  No idea and can't currently try.  But I did spend some time on Live trying to reach some hard to get to spots without a travel power (or temp substitute).  Usually I used a combo of Combat Jumping and Hurdle (along with Sprint) when going for vertical distances.

And Kinetics defenders can cheat (and help teammates cheat too).  By 18th they have both Siphon Speed and Inertial Reduction.

With Swift and Hurdle now being Inherent, it's made things significantly easier in my experience compared to the olden days of Legacy/Retail.

The towering inferno badge stumps me to this day. My understanding was one of the original devs had stated that there was no place a character couldn't get to with whatever travel power they chose. With no jet pack, and having combat jump and SS, I've yet to get to the top of that building. I'd thought I could hop up, maybe catching a foot hold or two on the window sills, but no such luck.

This thread reminded me of that blimp over AP.

I tried to reach/ride it once but couldn't.

Well the obvious one that comes to mind is the top of atlas statue... or is there some trick I don't know.

I haven't tried it personally, but i'm pretty sure you'd need a travel of some sort to reach the Ambitious badge in Nova Praetoria since Cole's tower is giant.  Not even the Jump Pack is enough to reach the top.  Eyes to the Future in Neutropolis is similar at the top of Neuron's tower; there is a roof access for that one but I think it doesn't quite reach the top.

EDIT: It just occured to me, can you get Triumphant in Warburg without any travel powers?  It's in a similar spot to Top Dog and there isn't much around to climb.

I do it with the jump pack, but you have to stop halfway up and let it recharge.....nice view, especially at night!

Well, the Posi TF GIVES you a jet pack.  And if you know that's going to be your only jet pack, one hour of flight can last you to level 50.

Why wait when the generic Sky Raider jetpack is 5k inf for 30 minutes of flight.

Though I don't think that's the point of this thread.

Well, I was answering more in terms of the Classic Hero challenge, since that might be an allowable thing.

If you want to go by that logic, there's a couple other jetpack sources.  Most notably Posi Part 2 gives you one, and if you're red Marshal Brass gives you the Goldbricker Jetpack in his first mission.

We used to say I could walk all night, and we could and we did
Down that gravel road, to that tiny town, and the door always opened
Now we say I could walk all night. It's not true
We can't walk all night, no, because we don't want to
We want a bed and a blanket, some light breakfast, sometime tomorrow
We want a bed and a blanket, some light breakfast, sometime tomorrow
And I sing it now, hey hey, hey hey, who woulda thunk it
Hey hey, hey hey, who woulda thunk it..

just sayin

Nope, the Classic Heroes are running as close to issue 0 stuff only as possible.  So no Posi 2, no jingle jet (not sure, I  think the first winter event occurred after i0).  Likewise no FBZ to grab a jet pack (was PI even a thing yet?)  There was no level 41+ yet etc., etc..

Edit:  From the Guide for when stuff was added/changed:

FBZ --> issue 2

Peregrine Island --> issue 1

Level cap raised to 50 --> issue 1

That's the one I was thinking of.

There's also one on top of the sphere in Aeon's city in Cap.
