Thanks for the suggestion; I'll definitely try this out.  It looks to be pretty solid in terms of Def and Res.  I notice there seems to be a lot of focus on boosting recharge; I assume that's for Hell on Earth?  On that note, I've been trying to work up my own build and I hit on a very similar list of powers, the one exception being that I took Tactics instead of Afterburner.  Is having that extra LotG mule better than the team bonuses from Tactics?

Posted

Depending on the secondary, I tend to go for more accuracy on pets, due to them being lower level. It really makes a difference once you get into level shifts later on, and not all secondaries need many LotG mules. I think I only have 2, mabye 3 on my demons/thermal, and I definately run all 3 leadership toggles.

I've seen a lot of Demon builds that use Hell on Earth as a mule for the unique pet bonuses.  What's the advantage/disadvantage to that approach versus what this build does in spreading the procs around the pet summons and putting partial sets in HoE?

Some other sets, such as Robots, don't have a "mule power" to stick all the Aura IOs into. By putting them all in a power like Hell on Earth, this lets you largely slot your actual pet powers as you like. Far as the pet slotting themselves, thats largely subject to personal preferance. Another example of having a power like Hell on Earth being an advantage versus a set like Robots without one, they have several Knockback powers. So you need to spend more slots with KB -> KD IOs as well, costing even more slots. So Robots have to spend both slots on the Aura IOs as well as KB - > KD, which adds up to quite a few slots Robots are obligated to spend, where a set like Demons does not.

Personally, I like slotting for Accuracy (because pets are lower level and tend to miss), as well as damage procs where I can. (It does make a noticeable difference), as well as Soulbound Build Up proc.

Additionally, remember that by putting Aura IO's in Hell on Earth, that opens up other things such as putting a Resistance or Defense IO onto a pet, if you are lacking powers that can accept those.

So there's a few reasons why many consider having such a "mule power" is a boon.

Hope this helps!

HoE does good damage, and also boost the damage of one pet (usually the Prince). So you want it up more, and with better combat stats.

But you also want the base pets with higher stats.

So it's a trade-off. I'm not sure which way you end up doing more damage.

Not using Hell on Earth as a mule generally is a bad idea. You don't get much out of slotting it with like damage sets. And you can lose alot of good bonuses frankenslotting your pets. Recharge is important to mastermind builds. Your secondary keeps your pets alive, and the faster your secondary recharges the more benefit you can get from it. Thermal has some long recharging debuffs and you ideally want to be able to spam your AOE heal when needed, as a resistance based set is going to take more small chunks of damage vs a defense set where your pets get missed a ton then taken nearly to dead when they do take a hit.

I would say this build is overall bad. Demon prince at 75% damage, 45% accuracy is bad. Only the T1 minions are damage capped in exchange for putting more damage into hell on earth. That's a bad slotting choice. Looking at this build, they made some choices that are utterly nonsensical. 2 slots of Mark of Sup for 4% damage boost? Thats utterly useless.

The thing about Masterminds is the two most important values you enhance directly are pet accuracy and pet damage. Only your T3 is the same level as you, so the rest absolutely need the accuracy if you intend to fight more than even level enemies ever. Even then, only 45% accuracy for the demon prince is not great at all. Purples will be missed alot, melt armor has a decently long recharge and isn't going to be something you can spam to make sure all enemies are always defense debuffed, this build is far from ideal.

You would overall be much better off using hell on earth to mule pet auras and making sure your minions are as close to 99% enhancement for acc and damage as you can possibly get. There aren't that many ways for you to increase your pets damage without teammate buffs. Same reason musculature is the default alpha for masterminds, because you overall get more mileage out of a damage boost than you get out of anything else when you can use IOs to take care of most of those other issues that aren't increasing your pet's damage.

Hell on earth is good, but its not amazing. The mini imps can die pretty easily and are not a reliable source of damage as you have zero control over them. All together they do add some significant DPS to a single target, but not as much as reliably maximizing your main pets damage gets you, and hell on earth needs a pretty insane amount of recharge (more than this build has, more than most have) to be perma and because the little pets die and don't even show up on your pet window, you have no way to actively monitor how many of the imps have spawned or are currently up and doing damage. Not worth it really to heavily invest in enhancing the damage for Hell on Earth, it also does not enhance the damage boost given to the minion you use it on.

Reasons behind my demon/thermals finalized (level 50) build:

Levels fly by fast, 1-20 isnt as long as you remember it to be unless you give yourself lots of houserules

Rez at 49: it costs like 70 end, rarely used due to people awakening themselves, not dying or rage-hospitalizing

Hell On Earth at 24: pre-25 enhancements are weak and will take forever to recharge.  since 1-20 content dies pretty quick there is not much use for it being taken AT 18

Pet slotting:  Maximizing acc/dmg/end while fitting in the resist/def IOs

Teleport is just my personal favorite travel power.  Teleport Target for general purpose on lagging/stuck pets, team teleport for when you gatta move fast or skip groups.  itf, ms libtf, lrsf, etc

Heat exhaustion at 47: You dont need the -regen pre-50

After taking the feedback here into consideration (thanks everyone!), and fiddling around with things, I've come up with the build below.  I prioritized pet accuracy and damage as suggested, and I think managed to keep def and res at decent levels.  Global recharge is at 155% without considering the FF procs in Lash and Crack Whip.

One thought:  Heat Exhaustion is perma, and remains close enough (0.35s) even if I were to remove one of the recharge reduction IOs.  Is it worth keeping it on such a low recharge to be able to apply to multiple targets, or could I use that slot better elsewhere?  Maybe add a Steadfast Protection:  Knockback Protection somewhere, or build out another set bonus?

I'm revisiting the above build.

First off, the two recharge IOs in Heat Exhaustion are unnecessary.  I don't find myself using the single-target debuff that often, and the base recharge in the build is enough to keep it well below the 40s duration even without those.  So I'll move the slots somewhere more useful; probably either put them on Crack Whip and swap the Bombardments for a set of 5 Ragnaroks, or throw them on Fire Shield to slot a complete set of Unbreakable Guard.

Secondly, with all the toggles the build really hurts for Endurance, especially if it has to fire off a lot of heals in a short time.  I'm not really sure what to do about that yet, short of relying on Incarnates.

Cardiac incarnate instantly solves all endurance issues. Thats the simplest way. If you wanted to run musculature or something else you'd need stuff like recovery serum/ ageless destiny/ lots of blue insps.
