My two cents. Plant/ is one of the most offense capable Controller primaries, IMO a bit of a two trick pony but effective none the less. /Nature is a versatile "healing" based set that can be used re-actively as a traditional healing set (whack a mole style) or as a proactively prebattle buffing (absorb) set. It has some -Damage sprinkled in, which is good early game mitigation. Combined, it is a strong "all rounder" combination. Out of the box on IOs (no sets) expect good control and good support.

This is my own Plant/Nature Controller, and he's been running around with this build that has basically zero defense for a long time. Regrowth with a range IO in it creates a huge healing cone and that pretty-much dictates where my character stands during combat... in the back, with the rest of the team in that healing cone. If I were to make one major change in my next respec, it would be to 6-slot Seeds of Confusion for better performance and a bigger cone. I find that I rely on it a lot more than I expected when I originally build the character.

What do you want your character to do? My build hangs back and has a heavier focus on buffs and heals. Mickmick's build can play more offensively and would be better soloing.


A few random thoughts on Plant/Nature:
- Spirit Tree is really weak and teams don't stand in one place long enough to enjoy the effect anyway.
- Lifegiving Spores is better, but still has the same problem. Even if your team knows what that grassy patch does, they're not going to take a break and bask in its rejuvenating glow, they're just going to steamroll forward and gain no benefits.
- Rebirth, on the other hand, makes a good single-target heal even if nobody needs a resurrect. It's slow to recharge but it does deliver the instant healing punch that your other healing powers lack.
- If you want a power that works great without any added slots (say, to replace Spirit Tree) take Spore Cloud. You might go through most missions without using it, but it will really prove its worth in those tough AV fights.
- I'm tempted to respec out of Entangling Aura since it costs a lot of endurance just to hold minions, but if you prefer a more aggressive melee style, it may be useful for delivering procs, and every bit of hold you can stack on a boss may help.

Both builds posted are fine. It depends on what you are trying to optimize and what are your build goals.

 

If you haven't played the combo sets and you aren't familiar with the game mechanics I recommend taking all of the powers as you level. You can always respec out of powers later.

Plant/:

Don't skip:

  • Seeds of Confusion
  • Carrion Creepers

Skippable IMO as in wont break you build:

  • Spirit Tree
  • Spore burst

Some folks opt out of the pet but I do not recommend this for most common builds.

 

/NA:

Don't skip:

  • Wild Growth
  • Wild Bastion
  • Overgrowth

Skippables IMO as in wont break you build:

  • Rebirth - it doubles as a rez and heal. It is a burst heal = to about 2 to 3x Regrowth healing but is on a long timer. High end recharge builds can get it below 60 secs.

I can see a case for skipping these even though I typically don't skip them on my builds:

  • Living Spores - it is practically a free Heal over time patch. I use it as my main heal to keep everyone topped off but I can see a case for it to be skipped.
  • Spore Cloud - looks great and is useful early game. Less useful towards the end game, suffers from scaling.
  • Entangling Aura - unless you are stacking double auras (Elec/, Fire/ or Ice/), stacking pulsing persistent holds (Dark/ or Earth/. Mind/ too) or playing in melee this power won't have as much utility for you.

/Nature Affinity tips:

  • You can play this set proactively (Buff before battle) or reactively (like a traditional healing based set). I gauge how a team performs and adjust based on the team's needs. Teams with more squishies will likely need a proactive approach
  • Maintaining Bloom - don't go out of your way doing this but you can offset you Wild Growth + Wild Bastion buff from your Overgrowth buff. The first two will cap your Bloom at 5 stacks giving you 20% bonus healing. Overgrowth caps you on its own. During tough fights you can extend your Bloom uptime, which only last ~10 seconds, by casting a new stack; every fresh Bloom stack adds one stack (max 5) and extends the current stack. This isn't game changing but helps squeeze extra healing out of /NA.
  • I use Lifegiving Spores as a main heal, it is clunky and unusual to play this way. With your buffs constantly applied you can keep most of the group topped off. Once you figure out how your team fights flow you'll know who needs extra love and care from this power.  The main draw is the power is almost free.
  • Regrowth is a wide cone Heal over Time. Best way to use it is to use a power like Spirit Ward first followed up by Regrowth. SW will cause your character to face your target. You can also use a "follow target" command key/macro to create the same effect. Hover healing will give you some good coverage.
  • Entangling Aura is like a /Rad Chocking Cloud clone. It is an added layer of a "zero" cast time mez if you play front line support.
