I got the Poison, I need a remedy!

Recommended Posts

So Poison. No-one plays poison much. But looking on @UberGuy's amazing City of Data Poison seems quite decent in a "No buffs, all debuffs" kinda way.

I'm flailing around looking at various primaries (I've even got 4 builds done) but I'd like to hear what others think and potential builds before I start spamming the forums.

So, as Maxim says I got the poison, what's your remedy?

Ice/poison for the ultimate walking simulator. It's a build for the truly macho.

IMO, Poison is a late-blooming set that will do little to keep you safe early. It's main strength early is good single-target debuffing, so I think it should be paired with a primary that is strong defensively especially against large groups. Unless you PL into the mid-late 30s, when you get enough enhancement slots to start building a defense build based on set bonuses.

So, if leveling it up, I would look at the primaries that seem like they're going to give you good defensive opportunities early, and that leads me to:

1) Plant. Thematic, and best option. Seeds of Confusion takes care of LTs and below, and stacking the Hold with Poison's ST Hold or Poison Trap takes care of a single Boss fast (and the debuffs are good against a Boss before the Poison Holds become available). Envenom can be used to increase damage done by Confused mobs, without lowering their damage or chance to hit.

2) Dark. Also pretty thematic, and works well by stacking -ToHit debuffs along with Poison's. Then, Heart of Darkness with procs as a PBAoE together with Poison Trap also as a PBAoE puts out a lot of AoE damage for a Controller.

3) Electric. It's a good shutdown control set by draining mobs, and then later Poison Trap can help with AoE damage. Alpha strike can be a problem, but once that's survived, it doesn't take long to drain mobs. Poison Trap is supposed to do huge -Recovery, but I think the duration on it may be bugged... if it's not, though, then this should be able to End drain AVs.

4) Earth. Always a good control set overall, it gets Stalagmites and Earthquake early.

I asked myself the question "what would be good for Fold Space?" and I settled on Ice/Poison for my newest lowbie.  At 17 now, I can't kill things, but teammates can a little bit safer and a little bit faster.  I'm hoping it gets much safer and much faster once the good stuff opens up.

So my initial was "Fire" but I quickly rejected that. So now I'm debating between Elec, Ice & Dark, leaning slightly away from Dark just cos the build seems too much of a stretch.

The Elec build is weird because I've actually avoided Conductive Aura since it doesn't do a hell of a lot on its own. *Edit, I've done a version with Aura > Neutrotoxic Cone thingie instead

For Ice/Poison, you will have serious problems running both AA and Noxious Gas. Separately they're expensive toggles, but together they combine to form Exhaustron, a vampiric invisible fungoid living on your character's back, possibly masquerading as a cape, that sucks your life and saps your energy. I would 3-slot Stamina at a minimum, and probably 4-slot it, and 3-slot Health to get all of the uniques that give +Recovery or +Endurance. Unless you're planning to run Ageless, but I think this combination requires Clarion instead. Also, not slotting End Red in toggles like Weave and Maneuvers is going to make the Endurance problem worse.

I have a Mind/Poison/Primal Controller that is fun to play. I relied on P2W attacks for much of the leveling, and still keep them handy for low level TFs.

This is a "concept character": The fluffy part of the concept being that he essentially is accident-prone (and makes others prone to have accidents), the crunchy part of the concept was to debuff enemies and hit 'em with %procs for damage and control.

I settled on /Poison as the secondary, but I didn't lean into it as hard as I would have for an explicitly MOAR BETTA build.

Overall I would consider PROCing Envenom and Poison Trap. Poison Trap creates multiple overlapping clouds (AoEs), one on each target. Each cloud checks individually on all the targets in its AoE. Paralytic Poison is great for stacking ST Holds on bosses or taking out an extra Lt. Also a good PROC candidate. Venomous Gas AoE is fairly small, it is decent but disappointing. I wish we had the ally toggle instead.

Absorb PROC is decent for sets with no self heal.

On PROC based builds I would prioritize +RECH over RES.

On most of these builds that are not capped you can move some slots around to get +3% DEF (Slot for CJ/Man, or other powers); this is enough to cap most of the builds.

IMO The draw of Elec/Poison is good for (AoE) sapping, its is ok otherwise. CF and CA are necessary for sapping; /Mu helps but isn't necessary.

As pointed out above, the Ice/ and Fire/ builds will struggle to keep toggles running.

For Ice/ the SLOW cones can stack to fill in some Ice/ control gaps but their durations are very low. PROCs can pep the build up otherwise no great synergy from this pair.

For Fire/ the AoE Immob will be necessary for AoE Contrainment on Bonfire and HotFeet. Keeping pets alive will be hard for this combo, I would look at Smoke with this pair.

Dark/ plays mostly at range. While VG can stack with your -ToHit it doesn't have much synergy with the set so you can probably skip it. /Mace or /Ice may be better pairs if you want to maintain S/L DEF. Probably your strongest pick with /Poison so far.

Set's not mentioned that IMO play better than double auras:

Earth/Poison is great. Earth/ is strong enough to carry any secondary and also has pulsing persistent effects. This opens up cast time for /Poison to debuff enemies at leisure. You also get some good zone control synergy.

Ill/Poison is a great pair for the reason Ill/TA is great; it is almost purely a debuff set with enough added control to help close Illusion's gaps. Illusion also brings fire and forget powers to the table (PA and Spooky) which lets you throw poison debuffs all around.

Plant/Poison is great too. This can be played offensively and you can choose to not use your Weaken Debuff on Confused foes. Combined with Creepers, PROCed PPT will make you feel dirty. Cold showers are in your future.

This is Dr. Jonas, my CIA-themed Mind/Poison/Stone controller, mainly used for soloing.  Not much in the way of Def/Res, but between Mass Hypnosis, Mass Confuse, two ST holds, two AoE holds, a spammable AoE fear, and multiple sources of -ToHit, it's rare that he gets hit by anything and even rarer that something hits him twice.  It'll be less fun when the proc nerf hits but in the meantime, it's a mob evaporator and a lot of fun to run.

Illusion/Poison here. Since you can't buff Phantom Army, debuffs synergize quite well. Can solo AVs if that's your thing.

Overall I would consider PROCing Envenom and Poison Trap. Poison Trap creates multiple overlapping clouds (AoEs), one on each target. Each cloud checks individually on all the targets in its AoE

Well now, this I didn't know. I did have Envenom procced up but cannabilised it. But silly proc trick I'm all over.

Think I'm going Elec/Poison, just because I've never gotten near 50 with Elec (as far as Gremlins maybe). Already have a Grav, Illusion and Plant on the way which is why I didn't consider them.

If you go Elec/Poison I would consider building it as a sapper (you can test it on test server). Elec/Poison elevates Elec/ overall above Earth/  but sapping with CF and CA are necessary for this. It works ok vs. single targets. The problem with PPT is it has a very low chance for -End and -Recovery. This set up needs the overlapping cloud model to work for this; vs ST you only get one cloud spawned.

So I built an Elec/Poison in Beta and kitted them out.

@Coyote's End concerns immediately cropped up. So I gutted Alkaloid and used the slots to slot toggled and Health a bit better. Quite entertaining overall though, not the single hard lockdown of other sets (some were confused, some were asleep, others were choking to death and some were just standing around twiddling their thumbs. All were falling over constantly).

That is basically how Elec/ plays, most of the interference is JC keeping enemies on their butts. Sapping adds another layer of control for those in your local field.
