StriderIV Posted April 11, 2021 Posted April 11, 2021 Hi all! I’m a historical Tanker player who hasn’t rolled a VEAT before. Taking a look around, it seems that a Crabbermind might fight my play style. I team 99% of the time, and I hear they are great for that, as well as pretty tanky with some good support/control powers. Am I correct in these statements, or am I barking up the wrong tree when it comes to Crabberminds? 😂 Definitely interested in builds if anyone has any that they want to share, or just general tips and tricks!
Gulbasaur Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 (edited) This post might help you - Crabberminds don't really play like masterminds because you have no control over the pets and is mostly viable by abusing recharge, so be prepared to drop a lot of inf onto the build. I think the line for permanent pets is 190% recharge or thereabouts. You can get 90 from perma Hasten + Mental Training, so you've "just" got to make up a hundred elsewhere. They also don't get any pets until level 35, which is also worth knowing about. Until then, they play sort of like sentinels. Also note that up until level 24's forced respec, you'll play like a somewhat middle of the road corruptor. SoAs are tanky, having very high defence, some of which they share with allies and pets. Team Tactics: Maneuvers provides a fairly silly 10% defence, unslotted. They also do a lot of AoE damage, but can struggle a bit against single targets if their pets are off doing other things. Edit: SoAs have a lot of debuff, which means they attract aggro reasonably well. Nowhere near tanker levels, but okay. It's probably worth investing in the power pool AoE taunt if you want to do actual tanking. Welcome to Arachnos! tidge Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 The SoA can be built very tough, but they don't make particularly good tanks IMO. That isn't to say that playing by themselves they can't get a lot of aggro and need to be tough, its just that they have many good tools for improving team performance as well as debuffing enemies (and providing some 'softer' controls). My take is that for team play, focus on the team buffs (from the SoA tracks) and enemy AoE debuffs (from the SoA attacks) will pay larger dividends than just trying to cap your own resistances. Don't fall in love with your pets... they are not like henchmen, and they are not like controller pets. The closest analog to them that many players will be familiar with are Lore pets. Your teammates are your best pets. @Gulbasaur makes a good point about not getting the pets until higher levels. If you intend to team for lower level content, you won't have them. At 50+ content, you will be revisiting the forum to find ways to keep the pets alive in order to increase your own damage output. Here is a thread to examine. Any SoA build advice from @Omega-202 is worth considering. If you post a build asking for advice, he'll have something to say about it. Here was a thread specifically focused on some of the "pet" questions. 1

I HAVE heard that you really have to invest in SoA builds to make them shine, but I'm sure it'll be a fun project 😛 1

I'm definitely looking at the pets as a nice "bonus" for my Crab, and want to focus on just being a force multiplier for my team, do decent damage and be decently tanky. Would be nice to have a hero that could fit into most content relatively easy!

Am I correct in these statements You are 100% right in your assumptions, if by tanky you mean "tanky" and not "tanking" for the team, for crabberminds have no taunts. I am appending my crabbermind build. - it can solo 4/8. - it is cheap. I put a purple set in Shatter Armor, but it is not needed and can be replaced by the equivalent orange one. - it is thematic. I have 6 spider bots to which I had the cosmetic one. - it is second only to my plant/poison controller in getting friend invites. So team friendly, yes.
