Pick My Blaster Contest!

If we're allowed multiple entries, then I have another candidate to suggest. If not, then this can stand as my suggested build. 

 

The powersets are dual pistols, sonic manipulation, and force mastery. An oversized robot potentially named Audiobot, Bulletsong, or some such, can use sonic waves in close and use dual pistols*  for mobs further way. This is a build that should be comfortable soloing or on teams, at higher difficulties, with good damage and multiple kinds of debuffs to make the build function even better. It can function well mostly at range, but you'll want to head to melee range sometimes to use hail of bullets. It probably does the most damage when spending most of the time in or near melee (like many blasters) because hail of bullets can be used immediately, whenever it's up, and that's how the sonic powers offer the most benefit. 

 

* Rad X pistols look great in an oversized robot's hands, very fitting in terms of size and look. 

 

The skill "swap ammo" in dual pistols provides access to additional fire damage (incendiary), a slow debuff (cryo), and -damage for mobs (chemical). You can also use standard mode for powers and have -def in a couple of them. There is -res in piercing rounds and knockback in multiple dual pistols powers. It is a reasonably proc friendly set. 

 

I don't have sonic manipulation on my Mids, and so the secondary in the skeleton build below is blank. The key pickups are very straightforward, in any event, as the -res aura is a given (disruption aura), as is the sustain (sound barrier). The "get away from me" T1 (sonic thrust) is a hoot to use and very effective at keeping melee bosses from rearranging your robot's circuits while up close and personal. There are 2 melee range ST attacks from which to choose and a PbAOE attack with a chance to hold. 

 

Regarding pools and epic, force mastery picks suggested in the "skeleton" build further down offer high smash / lethal resists, a defensive shell in personal force field, and a godmode power (force of nature) for surviving the otherwise unsurvivable (for 2 minutes, before the crash). Leadership toggles may be a bit of a stretch in terms of concept. Thus, the force of will pool is suggested. It offers a good debuff power, a movement power, and a survival power that can be used just before the force of nature crash.

 

Selected defenses can be built up to 20%+ (or 30%+, with focused effort) with both +3% defense IOs, combat jumping, weave, and set bonuses. With good default resists and multiple ways to raise them in a pinch survivability should be reasonably good, whether solo or on teams. 

 

For incarnates paralytic interface seems to fit the concept particularly well, but other picks could also be reasonable and would probably be mechanically stronger. Ion core final judgment could be a massive build up and release of electricity, which is both effective and relevant to the concept. Intuition radial is a bit of an unusual pick for a blaster and would be taken for the effect on range and debuffs. But, musculature would, of course, be a reasonable substitute.

I saw the above post and thought my build was taken, but Ninja Training is just a place holder. This is my second entry: a more consistent blaster build in performance and more comfortable sitting in melee.

 

Backstory

Liam Smith was just an ordinary guy that was jealous of all the media and social attention that heroes get in Paragon City. He thought that he might be able to fake being a hero if he bought a gun and a sword. He spent most of his early career trying to do more with absolutely no real powers of his own. Finally sick and tired of never getting any attention and craving the attention that growing up in a family of 10 children denied him, he went to help save the city reactor Terra Volta and made sure to get a large dose of radiation. Now he can command fire and the attention of the media!

 

Details

This build has 45% Melee, 49% Ranged, 42% AoE defense and 56% resist to Smashing and Lethal. You can jump stealth into the middle of a pack and Hail of Bullets then Bonfire to whittle down most of them and your two melee attacks add -Def and Golden Dragonfly hits hard and looks cool. You have a heal, and Smoke Flash to give you some breathing room. I did not choose Blinding Powder since I just can't make the Arc work for me, but for some this is a major power with a Contagious Confusion proc in it.

 

If you team a lot you might want to switch the last two powers for Melt Armor and Rise of the Phoenix, I went for acrobatics because I hate the rare times I get hit and held.

 

Overall, this is a very flexible build with lots of options. Using Dual Pistols gives a more consistent damage output for fast running teams where you do not have time to Aim and then Build up, but you do miss out on that burst damage trading it in for swap ammo and stealth.

I'll throw in my favourite blaster so far - dark/ta. This is a blast-troller combination that might be without equal. You have access to: single target and aoe immobilise, aoe knockdown (with proc), aoe slow patch, two single target holds, aoe stun, non notifying aoe -perception and of course stacking -tohit. In fact there are so many options it's hard to take them all - I'll talk about the choices I made below. It plays almost entirely at range and unlike many combinations it has the tools to actually keep your opponents at range.

 

The theme is probably the biggest challenge with these powersets - I went with an animated scarecrow type character (hooded with pumpkin grin face), wielding a simple wooden bow and dressed in tattered robes. I took the fire epic mainly for bonfire (yet more control) but fire shield looks absolutely awesome with the rest of the theme. Mine is female but hovers permanently anyway so that dreadful male run animation wouldn't be too much of an issue.

I prefer dark blast to gloom even though gloom is very slightly better dpa in order to have one less dot attack. I would love to have taken and procced out ice arrow to have two holds but slots were tight chasing all the usual build goals and abyssal gaze wins out if you are only taking one. The build hits the ranged softcap but it is pretty safe long before that with all the control and -tohit. A few ff+rech firing from umbral torrent will tip hasten into perma territory. I also prefer only taking one build up type power so I don't feel like I'm constantly self buffing and upshot is great and adds another little burst of recharge.

 

For incarnates the build gets a lot out of either musculature radial or intuition radial. I find it satisfying when a build uses many of the components of an alpha and here I preferred the extra end and immobilize duration over the hold and slow duration and bonus range (umbral torrent is already more than long enough and tenebrous tentacles has artillery in it for decent range there). Both boost -tohit and damage so either are good picks though. Clarion is almost certainly the first choice for destiny but I am still working my way up to that.

Below is a nature-based blaster build. Any number of concepts can fit with a mix of cold, fire, and plants. Magical and mutation origins are probably the "go to" origin choices. 

 

The build has very good damage, good debuffs, very good cc*, and good enough defenses that teammates and/or inspirations can softcap defenses when needed and hits that get through are more readily absorbed. Both solo and teaming should go absolutely fine. Combat jumping can be substituted for hover if you'd rather be ground-based and move faster, in exchange for giving up the greater safety of hoverblasting. The build would exemp down just fine with 3 ST blasts, 2 AOEs, and the sustain power for Posi 1 onward. 

 

Debuffs ...  -def, -to hit, -damage, - regen, -res (proc), slows out the wazoo

 

* CC includes an AOE hold on a 25 second cooldown, perma bonfire, dual ST holds that can be endlessly cycled, ST immobilize, and knockdown in Blizzard and ice storm (ragnarok knockdown proc in ice storm).

A key reason to skip BFR is that the build as given here has a good single target chain that can keep being repeated; there's no need for another single target power. A related reason to skip BFR is that char already provides a second hold for bosses and it has far better DPA than bitter freeze ray.

 

Also relevant is that frost breath provides the only non-rain AOE power in the build (setting aside incarnates), with a quicker recharge than the others; it often ends up being available when ice storm and blizzard are on cooldown. It's also available when exemp'd down, meaning this build has 2 serviceable AOEs in virtually any content somebody is likely to play outside of a DFB trial.

Ice/Ninjitsu!

 

Name: NicetoMeetTsoo

 

The Backstory: 

The ancestor spirt stood and waited while the sorcerers glanced at each other worryingly. Something was terribly wrong with this Genin. When separated from it's master, most Ninjas will leap back into the shadows and return but this one....he just stayed passively near the warehouses single exit not saying a word.  They stared back cautiously. Surely, it had to be a trap.   Finally, the lead sorcerer spoke up.  "Uh, Do you.....want to come with us?" he said slowly.  His eyes shifted slowly towards the sorcerer.  "I will follow you, my master". He said in a deep voice.  

 

The rest is history. Eventually, he was accepted into the fold, and even learned to manipulate to arcane tattoo ink that gave the Tsoo their power.  Until one day, as the group was moving on to a new home base, he disappeared.  As they passed the threshold out into the street, from behind they heard him whisper "Into the shadows..." as he vanished in a wisp of smoke.  They didn't follow.  He had served well, and his life was now his own.

 

The Build:

Softcaped to S/l with a Range is 30 (when +5'd).  Incarnates are dealers choice, but I like to go with Intuition Radial, Assault Radial Hybrid, Degenerative Core, and swap between Clarion/Ageless depending on what I'm up to. 

 

At 50, 4x8 is totally doable (tested on Rikti, Carnies, and Malta).  the -tohit in blizzard keeps things from getting too messy while it does it's thing. Aid Self is a nice crutch, but droppable.  Focus on the bosses first, hit them with a couple holds to lock them down, than spring attack in and slice away!  AoE is very light before blizzard, but (solo) it's up for every group, especially if you swap one of the damage procs in Golden Dragonfly with a FF+rech!  AVs though, is where this shines.  Pylons go down in 1:25 (no hybrid, lore, or insps), and when you really want to open up the taps, pop some reds to damage cap turn on hybrid, and that things dropping in 45-50 seconds.

Thank you everyone.

 

This worked out better than expected.  I got a lot of new ideas, a lot of practical knowledge.  I enjoyed all the entries, and every one had something to add to the mix.  Not a clunker in the bunch.

 

Deciding on a winner was difficult, but it came down to theme.  Plant as a secondary, although it seems very powerful, is hard for me to swallow concept-wise.  "Take that, villains!" he cried as he hurled a cactus at their heads.  It's just too much of a stretch for me at this point in time.

 

I also realized that I've got a bit of a snob bias.  I know that Fire is the most popular primary for so many reasons, but I feel like it is over-represented.  Yes, I know there are no quotas and no one is going to care, but again, at this point in time, Fire/ is out.

 

And honestly, it came back to theme for me.  Which spoke to me?  And I was torn between Dark/Atomic and Radiation/Dark.  Both would work for my idea, but at the end of the days, there could be only one.

 

Congratulations @Icono04, you have won the first Yomo-Approved Blaster contest!  Since you did not submit a build, your prize reverts to just a plain old billion inf (whew!).  If you can send me a private message on these boards with your global name, I will send you your prize.  I would like to see your build, however, because I am incredibly torn about how to handle mine.  Atomic seems too good to be true, and there are not a lot of skippable powers in either the primary or the secondary.  I am outraged, OUTRAGED, that most of the Atomic powers only take Accurate Defense Debuff IOs instead of both Accurate and regular Defense Debuff IOs.  Hello?  Achilles Heel?!?  I guess I have to settle for it in Beta Decay.

 

My theme is basically a time-traveler from a post-nuclear future who has been sent to our time to ensure that his/her (haven't decided yet) future occurs.  Maybe gold side, maybe red side.  I foresee a lot of hand-to-hand coupled with a lot of PBAoE debuffs.  Atom Smasher is, literally, to die for.  If anyone else wants to post a build, I'd love to see it!

If your looking for a build, this should be a decent starting point for you (maybe try it out on test and see how it feels).  95% Slow Resist, 32.5% Def to S/L/E/(almost) N/Ranged should be plenty with the debuffs being pumped out ans everyone flopping around from Umbral Torrent. Finish it off with plenty of rech, and a couple proc'd out holds to shore up the ST damage .  

 

You could swap gloom for dark blast, and one of the holds for Life Drain if you feel like you want it.  I was never a fan, but I don't play dark on blasters that often.

As much as I wanna say winning lots of costume contests :), that volume of influence comes from playing the Auction House game. Once you get a few good niches, you're able to make a lot of influence there. It just takes some time to get good as it.

I'm good at the auction house game.  I'm VERY good at the auction house game. None of my alts will ever need anything, I have all the inf I need. 

 

 I'm just not "here's 8 billions in a fingersnap" good.  You know?

That was like the other day with SafeMoon. 1 guy sold ~$10 million worth of coins, and that didn't even come close to closing out his wallet, and I'm like I'll double my holdings with another $500.00.

 

In CoH we just gotta keep grinding, and the 500 mil influence Yomo just sent me will be getting back to him on the market as I outfit a new ice/fire blaster. Making a build in ~10 minutes saved me several hours of grinding. Thanks again the contest was fun even though I wasn't the winner.
