From the game to my tabletop. Custom CoH Miniatures

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a resin printer and had the crazy idea that I wanted to take some of the 3D recreations of my characters made in DAZ Studio and convert them into 2 inch miniatures. It took a few days to work the kinks out, but I now have 3 successful miniatures

Thanks for looking.

So awesome! Ricochet and Crime Fighter look great.

The Sculpture came out a bit, well... cheeky. rs4wmRnk_o.gif

To be fair, the printer appears to have captured that COH...um...effect...rather accurately.  One of my characters had the skin-tight spandex and was drawing one too many comments about how "cheeky", as you say, he was.  Nothing I could do as it was how the devs designed the costume piece.  I liked the outfit otherwise, and as he's a rather upright and modest fellow, I gave him a long cape.

It hadn't really occurred to me at the time of converting the model from DAZ Studio to be sure and remove his atomic wedgie. I'm fairly certain once painted it will hardly be noticeable.

@Mystic Fortune any tips you can share on how you went about this?   I have been looking for a program to get some of my characters into STL so that I can print them.

As much as I wish I could say I've cracked the code with porting CoH models over to STL files, that's simply not the case. What I've done here is meticulously recreate the look of the City of Heroes characters to the best of my abilities in DAZ Studio, pose the models within DAZ and then exported them into OBJ files which I then take into Lychee Slicer for correcting, rescaling and attaching a miniature base.

This is partially why I've chosen characters with 'simplistic' character designs as opposed to some of the more extreme designs possible in the character creator.

Looks better than anything I have tried so far.  I'll give DAZ Studio a go and see if I can become an artist.  Not likely, but it's software so there is at least a chance.  🙂

Anyone can become an artist @Ura Hero.

It's not exactly quantum physics you know.

I'd have a better chance with quantum physics. I could at least make something up that's believable. With art, I would have to draw something believable.

No Joke CR has helped tons of other artists get better. even writers photographers and people who do cartoons and he's great at pointing out the stuff other people miss. Spend any amount of time in the multimedia section and you'll see it.

You will also be bombarded with terrible puns but that's the price you pay. :p

That came out great, especially the hair (almost DBZ-ish) and skull pauldron.

I get this answer often like it's some definitive reason a person cannot become an artist,

it's ironic to me because as I keep reminding people I literally started by drawing stick figure

ninjas as a teenager. We all have to begin somewhere & many artists, myself included, "start over"

multiple times along the way. Where you are today doesn't determine where you'll end up.

So the running gag is "if you think you understand Quantum Physics, you really don't understand Quantum Physics."

Its very nature defies most attempts to comprehend it. By contrast creating art is something nearly anyone of any

age can get better at if they invest the time necessary. It's not all that different from learning a language really.

Will you ever master it well enough to fool a native speaker? Maybe not but if your goal is communicating

well enough to be understood it's easy enough to attain. Likewise you may not learn to draw like (insert

other artist you admire here) but learning to create art you can be proud of is within anyone's grasp.

He looks ready to chase Scooby Doo and gang around an amusement park.

I was already not completely happy with Ghost Man's pose and his lack of muscle tone, but now he's been compared to a Scooby Doo villain twice. That seals it! He's getting reworked in the future.

In other news!

I've successfully printed another miniature! Another caped hero, and a female to boot!

For years I did not know what I would do with a 3D printer, if and when I would buy one....you have just given me a reason to buy one.

These look awesome!
