My Ice/Ice/Cold "Blapper"

Snarky

Recommended Posts

I have my first iteration of my Blapper 50d and Respec'd.  I have run him in a few low level TFs and over the next couple days will be doing ITFs and late game stuff, opening incarnates etc.

While "Blappery" to me you will notice most are somewhat ranged....errr all but one... wait, none....are melee.  Sure, I got some PBAoE melee in there (quite a bit actually) but the radii are fat and i'm happy staying a few feet away.

The tactics in low level TFs (time available) is to drop ice patch right out of the range of the mobs.  Then Aim, Build up, Big attacks, rains etc.  Then I move backwards hitting with cones and ST.   I think of this maneuver as a "Kaufman Retrograde" from an old Star Trek game.  Basically fly the Enterprise backward so anything chasing you eats photon torpedoes as fast as you can sling them out.  AR/Device Blasters probably think of it as setting the battlefield then letting your enemies enjoy the terrain. The slows really make the time more relaxing.

Any suggestions for a rebuild are appreciated.  I had some 'extra' slots and got funky with Frigid Protection.  I tend to not like Proc Monster builds.  I just love set bonuses really.  But I went crazy there.

The order I took the powers in is a bit off because i used my Ice/Temp as a base and it just did not line up right.  But I did not want to hand redo every enhancer in MiDs for a perfect fit this run.  Been running this guy a lot lol.

Playing this thing at 50 is a hoot.  Sometimes i think i went overboard with the control type slow powers.  The team just steamrolls crap and i am like...but i got toys.  Then at the end of the LGTF I am surrounded by a few hundred aliens, teammates off chasing AVs, and boy does this thing start to shine.  Everybody take a chill pill, i'll kill you in a sec...

Two macros for the Blappery-minded Ice/* (I use them on my Ice/Fire). "Drop rains on top of myself"

/macro IS "powexec_location self Ice Storm"

/macro BL "powexec_location self Blizzard"

I jump in, hit one or both of these, drop Burn and start attacking the nastiest thing in the spawn with melee and quick animating single target attacks/holds while the rest melts away.

Thank you so much!  Does this by any chance create the "power buttons" for the power trays?  Or how do you activate them?  I prefer power buttons.  My setup is using a Razer Tarterus for when I "lose" the mouse in the madness

Buttons, I prefer buttons too. My set-up looks like this

image.png.be6e2baa54b45e65ee3d9ece6a57e35d.png

You can see the "Self" versions on Tray 1 (7 & 8). Tray 2 had the powers themselves so I can track when they've recharged and Tray 3 has

/macro IT "powexec_location target Ice Storm"

/macro BT "powexec_location target Blizzard"

versions for when I want to plonk them onto a target further away (very useful for Blizzard since it makes things fall over too).

So normally I jump in and hit 0>9>8>6 and 5 and everything around me gets hit with Build-Up& Aimed Blizzard, Burn and FSC. If Blizzard isn't up I use Ice Storm instead.

The setup @Carnifax showed is a smart and versatile way to lay it out. If you prefer something simpler, but at the cost of versatility, you can use a bind like /bind 8 PowExecLocation Self Blizzard  and then place the Blizzard power button in the 8 slot of your power bar (and similar for the other powers). That way, hitting the 8 key will acticate the power just like normal, and you can see when it is recharged.

The tricky bit is that if you ever decide to change your powers layout and put something else in the 8 slot, you will need to change the bind. Hence the loss of versatility. Still, it is another possibility.

I use my mouse a lot on buttons, especially on complicated setups .  But I always set up 20 buttons in two trays for my Razer Tarterus hotkey pad.  So, i set that up as usual.  Then i added another tray that is the 6 variations of the two rains (standard, self target, loc at distant target) added my two native cones and my Incarnate nuke (chose the ice cone) and finally the targeted AoE sleep.  This gives me a whole tray of AoE ranged options as long as i havent lost my mouse cursor.  heh.  I am getting better about that.  When i do lose the cursor I can default to button clicking on the Tarterus.  Although with the targeted AoE on the rains....I still need the mouse.  Hmmmm.... May switch that to one of the created hot buttons.  Yeah, that will help.  Prob the target self one.  If combat is that screwy there is no doubt I am right up on it.

@Snarky Rebuild attached based on what i have run with.

Your smashing/lethal defense in your base build is quite suicidal and your resistances are a bit concerning. I also recommend you slot to stay at health cap when hoarfrost is up (the big benefit of epic ice). I also boosted your recharge to where it should be to use your skills constantly. Finally i removed your attacks with a bad DPA that you dont have reason to case with good recharge (since you can spam your "good" skills) and added ice sword (an awesome melee attack)

i drop your Fly travel power since i dont normally build travel powers. if you dont like that idea swap vengence for fly as thats the option slot

I also assume clicking core barrier on cd to put your defenses where they should be with at least 5% extra def and melee radial is good status protection and gets mobs to cooperate with being aoed down

Thank you.  But....

So, i will never use an ice sword.  And I have fly on all the time.  We could go further but I think that illustrates our differences in playstyles.  Your build is probably tougher and does more DPS.  Sewer rat might taste like pumpkin pie too, I'll never know cause I will not eat it. 🙂

I am running two characters with the exact same Ice build I posted above.  a 50 that is incarnated and a 42 that is part of a Blue Side slow levelling group.  I am real happy with both.  My main is a Dark Dark Blaster that feels like way more work.  This Ice Blaster is just a ....chilll... experience.  Also the Blapping thing never materialized.  The best range to be for this toon is 30-50 to stay out of the mix and keep cones available.  Therefore the ranged def is better (for me) that s/l.

I do appreciate you posting this though.  I am sure some Blapper will love it.

I have a similar play style @Snarky so I'm reading this with interest. Have an Ice/Temp but I'm eyeballing a reroll to full icey madness.

i tried ice temp first, have to say the ice ice cold works slightly better (for me) the extra AoE slows are my go to and help keep those that survive the killer frost confused and slowed (and in the DoT)

I actually kept it the way it is.  My "main" is a Dark/Dark Blaster.  For theme, vamp.  But the Ice/Ice/Cold is so much easier for me.  In very tough environments (+4 ITF, TinPex etc) I follow a Brute or Tank in and let them be the meat shield. Old school style.  In any regular difficulty this thing is bulletproof and freezes everything it sees, fast.

Coincidentally, I was working on an ice/ice/cold build earlier today as I was looking for another blaster build to compliment my DP/Fire.   S/L capped, E/N capped with a small purple, and permahastened with the T4 alpha,

I'm surprised at all the builds here missing Freezing Touch, given its the third heaviest DPA hitter in the primary-secondary combo.   Bitter Ice Blast -> Freeze Ray -> Freezing Touch -> Ice Sword is your main rotation, with plenty of AoEs to spam liberally as needed.  I might have to see about putting in Hoarfrost, though I like keeping my low level attacks for exemplaring.

Just a note on recovery slotting. Blaster sustains have twice the base recovery that stamina has. A 50+5 end mod io in a sustain is worth way more than any proc you can put in any power for recovery. I haven't played a blaster yet that has needed more end slotting than two 50+5's in the sustain and health at the base slot with the panacea proc and stamina at the base slot with either a performance shifter proc or another 50+5 end mod (they work out about the same). So you can free up a couple of slots here for other things, if you have nothing else to do with them you could slot heals into the sustain as well to beef up the absorb.

Yeah, no. Instead of softcapping S/L I softcapped Ranged Defense. Ice/Ice/Cold has the singular ability to sit 40+ range and be 98% as effective (statistic made up on the spot, tm, pat.. pend.) as if it added a melee attack. That is giving perfect circumstance to blapping. In actuality without the need for repositioning for cones and getting a strategic view of where you want AoEs I would argue it is 105% as effective as adding a "optimal" melee power.

Huh.  My DP/Fire has 5.01 end rec / 1.99 end use before procs, she laughs at carnies but yeah that might be a bit overkill.  I'll check her out in Mids using your suggestions, that could help in her next respec.

It is a tough one.

Basicly i managed to capped ranged def (46%) with 40% Energy/neg def and 35% S/L.

I would of liked more S/L resists (34%) but absorb from frigid protection seems to be doing the job and i did want cold mastery as my epic.

It works and i can't argue with that 🙂

Just going to add that I'm leveling an Ice/Ice/Cold and it's such a great combo as previously described. Control, damage, survivability, all in one chilly little package. Appreciate the info in this thread.

Two macros for the Blappery-minded Ice/* (I use them on my Ice/Fire). "Drop rains on top of myself"

/macro IS "powexec_location self Ice Storm"

/macro BL "powexec_location self Blizzard"

I went a little differently, setting them up as popmenus:

// Ice Storm

Menu "Storm"
{
Title Ice Storm
Option "Ice Storm &1" "powexecname Ice Storm"
Option "Here &2" "powexeclocation down:max Ice Storm"
Option "Target &3" "powexeclocation target Ice Storm"
}

//------------------------------------------
// Blizzard

Menu "Blizzard"
{
Title Blizzard
Option "Blizzard &1" "powexecname Blizzard"
Option "Here &2" "powexeclocation down:max Blizzard"
Option "Target &3" "powexeclocation target Blizzard"
}

So I create a macro for the popmenu -- "/macro Strm popmenu Storm", for example -- and then I can click or hit the key for the macro, and I get three options -- '1' works like the power does normally; I designate a location with a mouse click; '2' drops it centered on me (and straight down if I'm hovering over mobs); '3' drops it on my current target.
