First brute since coming back - Looking for solo recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi, all!  I'm going to be creating my first brute since coming back and wanted some input on my attack power set.  I'm looking at elec for my armor set since it fits the theme I want.  Since I plan on playing red side which doesn't seem to have much in the way of teaming opportunities I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of soloing.  Thanks!

Need to suggest a primary if you want a build.  Classics with same animations and different damage types (Axe, Mace, Fire, Ice), Single target (Energy Melee), AoE (Electric), Gimmick combos (Savage, Kinetic, Radiation, Titan), and Formerly Known as Scrapper sets AKA Brutes do it with more style sets (Scrapper is finesse, Brutes are Oops, didn't see you).

+1 to @Outrider_01 suggestions.

Energy Melee has so new stuff. Stone Melee hits hard. Radiation Melee, Super Strength.. it's hard to go wrong.

I soloed red side 1-50 on an Ice/stone Brute. I see little reason why /elec couldn't be swapped in. The protection from End Drain is going to be huge the more you push the diff setting.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute.  10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller.

I haven't bruted much since I came back so I'll share my n00by perspective.  I like my SS/SR and my Energy/Bio a lot, though if I had to make one brute I'd make a SS/SD for MAXIMUM ANGER and the extra nuke. I love EM but I'm always a bit leery of the self-damage (will using the good attack chain cost me enough survivability to faceplant?) on a set that doesn't have heals. SS comes with its own survivability issues though to be honest it hasn't been that much of an issue. Brutes do come with a death penalty in the form of losing Fury but if you stay pure villain your alignment power will sort that out.

(Horrible isn't it? Nerf death penalties!)

I'm not sure there are many outright bad choices but I strongly recommend going through the powersets in character creation so you don't end up hating them. You can suppress most Bio Armor effects for instance if you don't want your character to look like an ambulatory tumor like my Bio/Claws tank.

In any case you can easily ride the brute's Fury high for long enough to make up your mind on the powersets.

Can't go wrong with a CERB  (claws/electric).

Yeah that's what I meant. Spelling starts to going wonky with only 2 hours 💤 and working a graveyard shift. Thank you for the correction.

Radiation Melee is #1 on a Brute in my book. Not that it does the best ever damage, but seeing it from all angles. Exemplars well with an early AoE, forgiving and easy ST rotation, built in heal (won't do miracles, but it does top off HP that's being whittled).

For a new player I would recommend Stone Armor since it achieves greatness, but if wanting to go offense then Fire Armor. It's squishier but can be made sturdy and survives on the merit of killing stuff before they have the time to kill you (not joshing. Dropping Burn is enough to kill half a spawn with that one click).

Energy Melee hits the hardest but has a more complicated rotation, gaps in the rotation, weaker AoE, and, capital sin in my book, exemplars worse. It's what I would recommend when desiring to always play at max level though.

CoH being what CoH is you'll probably just make and play them all.

One warning about Radiation Melee.  While the attacks hit like a truck, they're also incredibly slow.  I can't count how many times on an Apex Task Force or on an iTrial, I was hit by a death patch or a Nova Fist because I had just started firing off an attack and couldn't move.  I've deleted both of my Radiation Melee Brutes as a result.  Although that isn't saying much since I've deleted every Brute I've ever made on Homecoming. :classic_tongue:

War mace is pretty strong and has bonus CC built into it to help reduce dmg in the form of knock ups and downs, and disorients too I think. It is a slow starter though.

Claws is overall a great set. And very noob friendly.

Super strength is always popular. You do have to learn how to use rage right and manage the crash though.

Street justice is a fun melee combo set, with very easy combos. But once you get a few powers in it flows fast and feels fun to play.

Katana is a great old set, and has bonus defense to go with it. Same with martial arts and broadsword.

Most of the rest if the sets, while still good (and some are  great) are not as first brute friendly as these in my opinion.

Also elec armor is great and should go well with any set you choose.

... unless you dump it.

..It only takes one Beanbag fan saying that they JRANGER it for the devs to revert it.
