Daredevil On D+...?

Recommended Posts

So, Daredevil Season 4 / Mouse Season 1 is happening. Maybe.

  • There was a two-year contractual lockout between Netflix's cancellation and anyone making anything new with the IP.
  • So D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk was the first character to make it back on screen after the lockout - deservedly so, though with production schedules and such Charlie probably filmed his tiny NWH cameo first.
  • The show will continue on from Season 3 but within the MCU proper, rather than being a Multiversal fragment off to itself.
  • Matt Corman & Chris Ord are attached to write and showrun. If they track with their previous work, would expect slightly more MCU-glossy, quite a lot less unnecessary gore, better one liners, and cameramen and editors who understand where the contrast dials are. TBH, I'd say that'd be an improvement.
  • Big flashing warning to note here is the word attached, which just means their names are being punted around and/or talks might be happening. Not one word written or storyboard scrawled*.
  • Also they could recast, though you'd be a fool to lose Cox or D'Onofrio, and not just from a fandom point of view.

*As I've found out to my personal cost and may have mentioned 18,000+ times here, talking about things in Whollyodd or having an actual contract in your hand means nothing.
Especially when it comes to getting paid.

Seeing D'Onofrio as Fisk again would be incredible, if it happens.  However, I have to confess that I liked almost everyone in Daredevil except the title character.  I don't know much about Charlie Cox as an actor, but I feel like he got the short straw as far as character development went.

Daredevil was pretty good but Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are still my favorites of the Netflix series. Hopefully we'll be getting new seasons of them all (ok, maybe not one or two of them) but I have no idea what the buzz is on that. I'd say Cox is definitely returning given his appearance in Spider-man: No Way Home.

There is Much Interweb Buzz about this. Giant Freakin Robot and Screen Rant claim both Ritter and Bernthal have been approached for new series, but haven't seen anything in the trade papers that might lend credence - and again, being attached to something is a very early, very breakable stage in the process. Nothing on Luke Cage - or Iron Fist, oddly enough.

I'm sure a few people would puzzle over what a D+'d Punisher would look like: given what they allowed in Moon Knight (and Hit-Monkey, which was made for Hulu but still part of their offering), I don't think they need to fret about Frank's fury being kept on a leash.

I'm going to be honest (ok, blunt 😛), The Punisher series was my least favorite of them, I didn't make it past Season 1. While I didn't have anything negative to say about it, it also didn't hold my interest enough to continue with it. I at least finished Iron Fist even though I hated the protagonist for many (many, many) reasons.  The Defenders was ok but nothing to write home about. I'm still fairly excited that these series may see a continuation under the umbrella of the World Mouse though, there is definitely an audience out there for all of them.

I liked Daredevil seasons 1 and 2 but could not get through the first episodes of season 3.

And Daredevil was the only Netflix show I liked.

So I am hoping they abandon the painfully slow, grimdark feel of the Netflix shows and go with the standard Marvel feel of actually being fun.

I watched a couple of the Daredevil episodes on Netflix. Mostly the ones that had Frank in them.

Then I watched The Punisher. I really liked the Punisher Netflix series, I liked the backstory and the character development. Now I want to see more of him just being the Punisher. The best thing that D+ can do, in my opinion, is to just continue the Punisher series with the same actor, only have it focus mostly on the planning and the action. The less dialog and the more gunshots per episode the better.

Slightly related note: Echo has got to the stage where they're releasing teaser production photos. So there's definitely room to build a Marvel Cinematic Hellskitchenverse.

(Which is the same as a normal universe except more expensive and full of bearded craft beer nerds)

Waking this up for SDCC news:

  • DD new series confirmed for D+ as Daredevil:Born Again... which, nerds, is the Frank Miller-era incarnation of DD. Ooh, dark.
(Hopefully not literally as dark as the Netflix version, because I came away with eye-strain after each episode).
  • If they do run with the main plotlines of the Miller-era version,it'll be much darker thematically than we've seen from other D+ Originals. Though I hope some of Karen's arc and some other ideas and detail does get airbrushed for 2022. Miller isn't the nicest bloke on the planet these days and that came out in his writing. This is a new show running with some of his writing: let the new folks write it.
  • Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio and Elden Henson all contracted to reprise.
  • Full 18-episode series order. So they're going big on it.
  • Release date is scheduled for D+ Spring season 2024.
  • DD will also guest in other properties on the way there, notably...
Spoiler

...She-Hulk, where he'll be involved as both Matt the lawyer and DD the superhero. That could be fun...

I find it hilarious that it's called 'Born Again' when Matt's a NYC Catholic and 'born agains' is New Yorker lingo for Protestants.

But yeah really hope they change Karen's arc from the comical booklets. Really I hope they just use the grit without any of the story. S2 of the Netflix series had more than enough Miller for my taste.

Well, on the ... bright ... side, Miller knew how to use contrast so at least the entire frame won't be obscured in darkness if the camera/lighting/art teams follow in his footsteps.

🤣

You see a mousetrap? I see free cheese and a f$%^ing challenge.

I imagine it will be much sanitized.  I don't see Karen Page becoming a porn star drug addict that sells DD's identity and then gets fridged on a Disney+ show.

I hear ya. The Oscar Isaac Moon Knight wasn't exactly a Mouseketeer, mind. You could easily have the nasty bits occurring offscreen in the viewer's imagination and just hint.

As both an example and segue: right at the end of Hawkeye, we see Maya confront Kingpin, and then there's just a gunshot.

In the comics Fisk takes a bullet to the face, but y'know, hey, whoa, Christmas show so it's left to the viewer to decide.

Speaking of which: D'Onofrio has confirmed he's returning - but what shape is he in?

(Other than large and quite round...)

In the Comics Moon Knight flays someone, then has a little flayed guy talking to him on his shoulder, so yeah.

Interesting thing about D'Onofrio is that he was fairly slim until he put on a bunch of weight for Full Metal Jacket, and never was able to lose it again evidently.
