Smashing/Lethal Farming on Excelsior

Some of you know that I am a farmer. Fewer know that I specialize in Smashing/Lethal farming. I enjoy it for a few reasons, but mostly I like the fact that if I run a team, a decent chunk of the population has toons that can handle it, since Smashing/Lethal is the most common type of damage.

I currently have three farms that I made, though I use two. The once I use are called:

"The Orb" Arc ID: 44869 in the Troll Caves. It has 99 mobs, all patrols.

"Hail the Orb" 45166 on the Dreck Map. It has I think... 151 mobs and 61 EBs.

"Hand and Foot" 44456 is my first farm, and I don't use it as much since my NPCs didn't work out as well as the Orb guys. I might convert this one to another Orb on a smaller map, maybe the City block. Probably not meteor. There's already decent S/L farms on the meteor map, I don't need to make more.

So, if you are a Smashing/Lethal Farmer, a tough fighter who thinks they can handle it, support who does their thing as crowd control or force multiplier, or just someone with a fighting spirit who wants to get their debt badges, I want to connect with you.

When I run a farm, I ask people to contribute within their abilities. I do not expect toons to be suicidal, unless you happen to be going for those aforementioned debt badges. I do farming as a social activity, and I have builds that give me the luxury of being able to converse while I grind Orb guys. My farmers also have warnings in their bios because I AGGRO EVERYTHING I SEE, and am unapologetic about it. Two of my farmers are Tankers, and I would like to "Run the Gauntlet" so to speak. But if I know I have squishies with me, I'll run something out in the open so there is lots of room for "tactical retreats". If I'm running 44869 in the Troll Caves, heh. That thing eats baby farmers for breakfast.

As for sitters, if you are sitting in my farm chances are that I know you and I am helping you with a toon. I might even make a Mids build for you, and help you get enhancements. Within reason. If you are attempting to "help" and floundering, then I'll let you fall back, but if you are determined to fight then we can discuss build strategies.

Nice thing about this is if you build for an S/L farm, then you have most of the game content covered. So it translates over rather nicely, and I have honestly not seen many S/L builds that are laser focused on S/L RES and DEF, though having strong S/L RES and then focusing the rest on DEF isn't a bad strategy and you can fake your way around pretty good until you run into Awakened or something. Heh.

Anyhow, if you are interested in doing Smashing/Lethal farming with someone who has a somewhat unorthodox and dangerous playstyle, shoot me a message and we can connect in game.

Quite interesting and thank you!

I will ask what AT and power sets you favor for this type of madness

I have a number of Brutes ( and a couple tanks) that can handle this quite easily.   I also have one Blaster….an Elec/Elec built for ranged defense that is an incredible fire support in a Farm that has people I can shed agro on.   Even poor old Elec can shred +4/x8 spawns….except the bosses.   I need a agro specialist at a certain point in most proceedings

Right now I mostly use my Fire/Rad Tanker and my Dark/Dark Brute for Smashing Lethal farming. I have other toons that can either act as support or just farm without the benefit of being a tank. Like my Crab Spider or Peacebringer. I'll pull them out for a stream or something, but I myself never stream.

Though we mentioned Tankers vs Brutes in the other thread, I alternate based on my mood. Also, my main farmers are slotted for general content as well... Well my Tanker is. The Brute was actually not intended to be a farmer at all, it just kind of ended up being really good at it.

Makes sense to me.

I'm surprised more don't specialise in it.  Most of my alts cover Res' and def' for S*L/Melee.

I have a Shield/SS Brute that I used to farm S*L farms.

Been using tanks (since that glorious patch) to farm also.  eg. Shield/Elec Melee Tank.  Also have a Shield/MA tank with heaps of AOE (mobs find it hard to keep their feet.)  Bio/Spines Tank that melts S*L.  Those are on Reunion.

Have an Elec Armour/Mace Tank who can farm very nicely on Excelsior.

I used to see more groups for it, but it kind of dropped off in favor of Fire. There are certainly some decent Fire Farms, but I like the versatility of S/L. I like that you can give the NPCs an attack set as the secondary, so they have lots of ways to hit you, but not a lot of armor.

When I started out doing S/L I had some options but they were not the best. My Bane and my Street Justice/Willpower Scrapper could handle it. Then I did a bit with my Savage/Shield Brute who is awesome but probably needs a tune up.

I think I really started getting results when I made my Dark/Spines Tanker. Very versatile and used for mostly stuff other than farming. Then I made my Fire/Rad Tanker who realized my fear of making the Dark/Spines obsolete, but I can dual box with them. That one is just a beast in a farm, and the one I will gladly pit against Brutes.

My most recent is my Dark/Dark Brute who wasn't even made for farming, but just ended up doing it really well.

I am currently working on another Brute which is my Forever Praetorian and a Kinetic Melee/Elec Armor Brute. I'm using the Pillar of Ice and Flame in my base to go through all of the Praetorian content. Since my zones are limited to Praetoria, the Wards, and Pocket D, I do have her set up for S/L and will try and do some runs with her.

If I have a solid team, sometimes I use my main, an Electric Blast/Kinetic Corruptor, who can do both Fire and S/L. She can't hold aggro, so I have only led a farm with her once, but it's fun clearing mobs solo to show off. But yeah, if the team had some melee, then her usefulness increases.

I am trying to make a Smash/Lethal farm of KM/MA attack baddies, with a seeds of confusion on a hover farm.

F**KING HILARIOUS when they turn around and start punching each other, go flying off in random directions from the KB in Burst or Repulsing Torrent; even better with the Eagles Claw kick mid air and another hits them with Cobra Strike than the EC guy goes flying backwards mid air.  Dragons Tail tripping a bunch up then one guy Repulses half of them against the wall.

Before I retuned my Peacebringer, I mitigated the KB as much as I could by aiming for nearby walls or the floor from directly above. Once I slotted Knockback to Knockdown from the Sudden Acceleration set, it was more satisfying, even if Dawn Strike STILL sends things flying, just not as far.

wouldn’t the returns be significantly higher without filling the team with lowbies?

Well yes, I can dual box myself and keep everything if I want. 😄 But I don't have troubles making a 50 and INF for ME.

I think people don’t realize the “why” behind farming activities.  For some, its simply they enjoy the social aspects.  For me, COH has almost always been a chat client with a built-in activity.

The idea is to find like minded players who want to do Smashing/Lethal farming for fun or what have you.

I have a Stone/Stone tank.  Impressive performance on fire and Melee maps.

Not brute like damage but rock solid reliable.

Update.

I have levelled up an Invulnerability / Super Strength (Non Rage) Tank.  Great for S*L.  Capped for Melee and S*L.  Two Force Feedbacks into Handclap (Plus Knock DOWN) and Footstomp.

Taunt.  'Ah-Arrh....'

isn’t the idea of farming though optimising the returns for a given amount of play time?

i think people use the words “farming”

and “playing the game with a team” interchangeably these days

That’s kind of my point though.  Not everyone farms for the same reasons.

I often use my farming account to “power-farm” 2-3 other alts on different accounts at same time.  It’s not really any slower than doing each one individually.

Or there are those who farm as a social thing and the speed/efficiency isn’t half as important as the companionship and chat window.

Solo, active farming for purple drops and/or influence isn’t even as lucrative as it once was.   Farming for recipe drops and then craft/convert/marketeer what you make is likely best way to leverage farming proceeds if influence creation is the goal.

And then there’s AFK farming, which is it’s own form of “min maxxing” when you consider the effort to reward is likely at the top of the scale since it takes zero effort.

And to your last point…..I run PUG’s all the time where it’s an “all levels welcome” sort of thing.  I try to find missions in Atlas specifically so we can include lowbies and SK them up to 49 or so.  That’s not a lot different than running a farming team in AE…just requires more travel.

thanks for the insightful response

you’re definitely right about purple drops being significantly devalued, it used to be really exciting to have one drop

i’m a big fan of AoEs and mass death so i can see the farming appeal, i tend to run kill most ITFs

My previous response wasn't meant to be flippant or anything, I really do dual box with no one else if my goal is to make INF. I never farm for purples. For some reason, I seem to get most of my purple drops while street sweeping. When I log in, sometimes I am just chatty so I fly around on whomever I am on and just clear whatever is interesting, and that's usually how I get my purple drops, cleaning up the parking lot.

I'm disabled and I AFK all the time. This is one of the reasons I run farms on the Dreck map. I can go AFK when I like, and rather than work out DPS, I just go by the number of mobs. So like on the Dreck map, I think I have 151 mobs, and 61 of them have EBs. In the Troll Cave maps, I have 99 mobs, all patrols. People talk about hyper optimized toons and the like, and how much INF you should be able to grind per minute, but I don't really care about that. See, those farmers are not always farming, and they spend time chatting, and on the forums, and the Discord. All that time not in mission, your DPS is zero. So with that in mind, I approach it by the number and size of runs. Don't get me wrong, if I join a farm group my speed is just fine even on my Tankers. But there is no rush when you have an idea of how long an objective will take, so you can plan for it accordingly.

The Dreck map is great when I have specific objectives, because it's a farm. You don't have to finish it. Just click the glowy when you are done. OR, if you are dual boxing with an alt and dedicating the run to the alt, simply log out with both toons, and when you both log in, the mission is ready to go.

Another reason I farm is because farms are frequent and available. If it's a slow night, I jump on Freak Fire and head to Atlas and you bet I can find a group. I usually prefer everything else first, except Task Forces, because of the aforementioned frequent AFKs. I do sometimes do ITF though for a couple of reasons. It's short, and that is a big plus. The second reason is that back on live my old crew used to do nightly speed runs, and it became a ritual to start doing them at level 35 and often ITF was used as a 50 party. Though these days on Homecoming, I have never done ITF on any toon below 50.

hey, it didn’t come across flippant at all - i worry the same with my questioning! sometimes can read harsh as plain text

back on live the holy grail of farming for me was a lvl 53 dreck with a lvl 42 SK, and nobody else on the team

i do wonder whether the game should introduce some challenges via AE where waves of mobs become progressively more numerous and challenging over time - i would certainly love to play that, even if the xp/inf was minimal

i see from what you’re both saying is that modern farming is a spectrum of pure min/max grinding vs a relaxed killathon experience
