AI of Your Character ...

I've read the resumes of some of you guys in the volunteer forum.

 

I know we've got our fair share of cutting edge geniuses, geniii or whatever the word is. Have you guys done this with your characters yet?

 

Here is a video... AI is turning characters into realistic faces.

 

 

So how long before we get shader-like software (you know, it sits on top of your game, filtering it) that makes video game faces into realistic ones?

There isn't any facial animations or even blinking, for such a process to build off of - our character's faces are literally just a static image.

Hmm, I didn't bring him over to Homecoming, but I had a character in the Original Game that I'd spent a notable amount of time tweaking the facial sliders to get it just right, and managed to get a fairly good representation of my face from college days, at least, what could be done within the limits of the game.  I'd be very curious to see what the outcome would be if a program retro-engineered it from game face to pseudo-lifelike.

Are we really so complacent and inured to the daily onslaught of AI monstrosities that we're now functionally immune to the horrors of the Uncanny Valley anymore?

I think it happens because the source image is perfectly symmetrical with no expression. Let's say we make a 3d model (make the face asymmetric a little bit), and give it proper expression. I'm sure the result will be much better.

The whole Uncanny Valley thing has always hit some people harder than others... I've noticed that a lot with the photographs of my ball-jointed dolls. Reactions vary across the whole spectrum, from "Hey, those are cool" to "OMGNo! Get those creepy things away from me!".

 

I'd be surprised, based on that, if we all had the same reaction to the CG images or realistic animations. 

 

Me? Those images cause no discomfort at all... The only similar thing that's ever freaked me out even a little was the Red Queen from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movies. Her huge head really bothered me for some reason.  Doll-wise the only ones that give me the heebies are Reborns. Those hit me pretty hard, so I *do* understand the feeling.

The image on the right looks like Rick from Pawn Stars.  Bet he got the Infinity Gauntlet for like 30 dollars and some store credit.

And there's some debate over whether it's a universal phenomenon...  And whether it's neurological (inherent) or cultural.
