Earth/Kin Controller was my main for almost 8 years of playing CoH. Here is the build I used to use.

While it is not particularly high in defense or resistance (It's a controller people)... it does quite well on it's own. Between all the controls that Earth has as well as the Kinetic and Fire Blast powers... it is quite capable of handling everything.

 

No Purple or PvP IOs were used!
