Anyone have a good ice/cold build they are willing to share? I am creating an ice/cold corruptor to use in PvP, but I don’t really know what to use for the PvE side. Just got to lvl20 but can respec — just been taking what I feel is right for now, but will definitely need to shift some things around.

I was making adjustments to my own build and ran across this thread.  I have some questions:

 

[*]Did you regret not having Frost Breath at all?  I've been debating what to do about that, and I'm leaning toward respeccing and taking it out; just going with Bolt and Blast for starter attacks.

[*]Is it normal to leave the shields at the default slot?  It's almost another 3% defense.  Is that not significant for the team?  Frankly, I could use those two slots elsewhere...

Been traveling for work but will take a look at this over the weekend - that’s me for posting. A few initial questions:

- why not bitter freeze ray?

- why no ice storm?

 

 

City of Jedi, I’m not a fan of frost breath (or fire breath for hat matter) due to the long animation. It is ok AOE for early stages, though. You don’t get your storms until much later so leveling can be a little rough at times.  I have been thinking of skipping the shields all together tbh. I feel like at 50+ everyone is apexes our and they don’t do that much anyway.  Just maximize your own damage and defenses/resistance.

So. This will be expensive.Aimed at PVE. I have little to no experience with Corruptors, let alone ranged ATs so expect funkyness (I don't like cones, they seem to be paired a lot with slow cast time but not always). You won't want to lose incarnate powers either.Certainly a "50" build in my opinion. I wouldn't normally slot Hecatomb into Punch, and I feel "eh" on Frostwork in general. But Cold seems to only become more powerful with more recharge you can fit in. My goal was to perma heatloss's endurance buff as far as the amount of recharge I was aiming for. Being that Ice Blast can eat a lot of end with fast casts, having heatloss up is critical. S/L/E Defense is just a hair below normal softcap at 42-43% so you may need to eat purples for incarnate content being that the softcap there is usually considered around 50-51%. I kept the team armors as even when your teammates can softcap themselves, being able to add more can protect them against defense cascade failure even if it isn't much. Imperious Task Forces have a lot of defense debuffs for example. Other than the Alpha slot, the other incarnate slots would be up to the user Part of me would want to steal slots off Arctic fog and fit the Annihilation res debuff proc in somewhere, as well as an Achilles's Heel res debuff. I feel like the defense enhancements there are too close on toeing the line on being needed or not, the resists feel high enough to be worthy of enhancement but I still feel weird about it.

 

EDIT: Last minute changes, no more Frostwork. Moved Preventative Medicine to health, picked up Maneuvers in FWs place. Hits 43-48% S/L/E hoping that heatloss can carry the end costs. Dropped Thunderstrike for Decimation in Icebolt. This will be the last edit, just because I'm sure there's more optimizations to be had and I don't want to endlessly post and repost. EDIT 2: I lied. Fit some procs in like I wanted to. I'll admit it was a bit willy nilly as I'm not clear on the proc math, but I feel pretty good about it.

 

All these concerns aside, I feel pretty happy with it as it is. I may give it a spin on the test server just to see how it actually performs before I commit to leveling on live. Certainly feeling better about it than my Ninja/Cold MM I had leveled before.

I won't lay out a complete build, but I will make some points that might help you do a build of your own:

 

- Ice Blast, Freezing Ray, Bitter Ice Blast (repeat) is a viable rotation at high enough levels of recharge.

- Power Boost from Soul Mastery makes IO slotting much easier. With Steamy Mist and various pool powers, hitting Power Boost will soft cap your defense and raise Blizzard/Ice Storm to soft-capped debuffs.

- Ice/Glacial Shield aren't really all that worthwhile. At higher levels, they're mainly just mules for LotG recharge.

- Vengeance is a decent LotG mule and Victory Rush can often help solve endurance issues.

- Splitting Scourging Blast across Ice Storm/Blizzard allows you to take the recharge bonus twice. Not only is this significantly cheaper than trying to 'purple out' (since you get 3/5 10% recharge bonuses from the two ATO sets) the normal way, but it means you're not forced to take otherwise underwhelming target AE sets and can frankenslot procs/additional features.

Finally sat down and tried to make a build. I really appreciate you guys getting me started. Botzoman, I really liked your build as a starting point, so here is what I came up with. Corruptors, especially /cold, you want to build for +Recharge, followed by defense. I wasn't getting close on my own,partly because I don't remember the sets anymore and how to get what I want quite yet, so just having something I could look to build on was nice.

 

 

Anyway, let me know what you think. I have no idea what incarnate powers to get - I stopped playing on live around the time that came out.

Also, I got rid of some of the procs for -resistance and +chance for hold in favor of more recharge. I also was trying very hard to get AIM 6 slotted with the +chance for  build up. I am not sure if I am sacrificing too much and should leave some of the recharge for my Alpha slot. All advice welcome - thanks!

I made some updates. I was told to go Masculature Boost instead of Agility in my Alpha slot, but this means I am not hitting the soft cap. What is more important? The extra damage or hitting the soft cap for s/l?

 

I was also told to try to build to the soft cap for positional defense, but I couldn't get anywhere near the same numbers doing that, not only defense, but also recharge took a big hit. 

Anyway, still open to suggestions.

Ok, you've asked enough, I will give you what advice I can. So let's deal with the alpha slot choice first, in my opinion agility is far better than musculature for pve for ice/ice. For starters you get a 45% end mod for heat loss and stamina vastly helping any endurance issues you may have. I have a /cold build I will share with you when I get back home. I think it's fire/cold and it's main goals were softcapped s/l, recharge, and as much reliable -dmg res debuff as I could. I'll try to retool it to ice/ice.

Ok, you've begged enough, I will give you what advice I can. So let's deal with the alpha slot choice first, in my opinion agility is far better than musculature for pve for ice/ice. For starters you get a 45% end mod for heat loss and stamina vastly helping any endurance issues you may have. More importantly though, is the 33% recharge (22% of which goes through ED) allowing you to use your most damaging powers for often and get hasten and heat loss perma far more easily. Plus you get the 20% defense and softcap in pve is incredibly important, it allows you to go into a group without fear and getting hit only 5% of the time is also allows you to avoid controls (in a way...it's not a good way...but it works ok).

 

While Agility is definitely a great choice for /cold, Musculature is always going to be strictly superior as long as you can achieve your build goals without relying on Alpha. The main reason for that is the fact that it not only buffs your own damage output, but also that of your Judgement and Lore abilities.

 

Here's my currently planned build for my ice/cold corr. It has softcapped S/L/E and Ranged as well as generally higher stats across the board than those of the OP's build. Recharge is 10% lower, but due to more optimized slotting some powers actually have shorter coodowns. Heat Loss has 90% uptime so endurance should never be an issue. Now this build could still use some fine tuning, for exapmple Rectified Reticle bonus in Aim isn't really needed and I should probably use that slot for an extra acc in Benumb, but my OCD won't let me to go to 49.9% to S/L. Also, I'm not sure how the new procs work in rain type powers, so I chose to ignore them for now. Either way, this build should be decent enough to use as a baseline.

I knew someone would finally take pity.  I switched from agility because I was able to get to the soft cap for s/l without it, and hasten was within a second of perma, and heatloss was perma (I I remember correctly, don’t have it in front of me).

 

Constantine, I can’t wait to take a look at the build you posted in Pines. I am out of town until Sunday but I am very much looking forward to crunching the numbers. I am not sure how the procs work in rain powers either. I feel like I read they are different than normal powers due the the pseudo pet dealing the damage. 

 

Is accuracy not needed in infridge at all, or do you feel it will just not be used often enough to warrant it?

 

That’s the only question I can really come up with looking at the forum post, but I’m sure I’ll have more once I get it in pines.

OK, so I have two versions. This first one is ice/ice/dark. It has almost perma soul drain, perma hasten, softcapped s/l, 71.6% s/l resists, and the agility alpha. I don't slot sleet for dmg as it doesnt do much and I found (using the power analyzer) that I could get the -res procs to work enough of the time to be worth it. The dps chain on ST is BFR >> BIB >>> FR. I think you will find that soul drain helps your overall dps far more than the musculature alpha and you will be far tankier than your build with 71.6% resists and more HP. It has less global recharge, but with the alpha the recharge on the powers is mostly lower or almost the same as the OPs.

Oh man, I can’t wait to look at this one too. I always liked /dark for thematic reasons and I love soul drain, but didn’t think I could get to the defense soft cap without scorpion shield. I also just realized I had sleet slotted for damage, which I never do while leveling, but was after the recharge bonus. I can probably reallocate those slots somewhere else. Thanks for posting!

Ok, this one is ice/ice/mace (like yours). I took the aid other and aid self powers because I wanted to be able to heal myself (there just isnt room in the ice/ice/dark build for this and still take soul drain). This has 49.6% s/l def, 51.9% s/l resist, and 173.8 global recharge. Again, I took the agility alpha as the extra recharge is just so useful. Once more I dont use ice bolt or ice blast in my attack chain so it isn't slotted. If you wanted to add more resist at the cost of recharge you could swap in numinas for the heal powers and have one slot left over. Essentially the trade off between this and my ice/ice/dark is that you are trading dmg (through soul drain) and 20% s/l resist for more recharge and the ability to heal others and yourself. I did not take field medic as when testing it my heal went from around 438 to 578....which just isnt much of a difference compared to what I can do with another power.

Is accuracy not needed in infridge at all, or do you feel it will just not be used often enough to warrant it?

 

 

Personally, I just find it too lackluster. It isn't worth to use on normal mobs for obvious reasons and it just doesn't do enough vs AVs.

 

OK, so I have two versions. This first one is ice/ice/dark. It has almost perma soul drain, perma hasten, softcapped s/l, 71.6% s/l resists, and the agility alpha. I don't slot sleet for dmg as it doesnt do much and I found (using the power analyzer) that I could get the -res procs to work enough of the time to be worth it. The dps chain on ST is BFR >> BIB >>> FR. I think you will find that soul drain helps your overall dps far more than the musculature alpha and you will be far tankier than your build with 71.6% resists and more HP. It has less global recharge, but with the alpha the recharge on the powers is mostly lower or almost the same as the OPs.

 

Well, while I certainly can can't with the fact that SD gives bigger damage boost, I feel that it's incorrect to compare it to Alpha slot ability. I mean, techincally if you would slot Musculature, you'd get even better damage numbers. But that would mean losing the extra recharge, ergo actually losing overall DPS. And that is exacty the point I was trying to make when I said "IF you can achieve your build goals without relying on Alpha". For my build, I aimed at softcapped s/l and ranged while squeezing out as much recharge as I could to have everything near perma. And I was able to achieve it without using Agility, thus making Musculature a superior option.

 

Now, don't get me wrong here. I'm not trying to bash your build or anything. I do in fact find it extremely impressive from the min/max standpoint and would love to try it out someday. But our builds are focusing on different playstyles. Yours is about getting in, hitting as many with sould drain and outputting as much damage as you can while relying on S/L def/res to mitigate the damage from enemies close to you. Mine leans more towards support, as I hover above the team and rely on ranged def as my primary source of mitigation and have the S/L def for occasional stray mobs that come into melee range.

No idea where my posts are ending up (tried posting twice and neither have shown up here), but I really loved your build, Constantine. I think the added capped range defense is well worth the sacrifice to global recharge.  

I did swap out flight for leaping and went ahead and took acrobatics. I got rid of the slot in aim and  a slot in stamina, but not sure where to put them. Currently added one to one of the shields for the +6% accuracy (probably not worth it honestly, but not sure where to put it) and I added a knock back protection to tough. My knock back protection with this additional IO is up in the 20s, which is probably excessive. I was trying to figure out where I could get a 5th LoTG recharge IO, but couldn’t come up with anything. 

My other two posts I made had the updated build but they for some reason won’t post. 

 I still really want to try Darkir’s build once test comes back up. Thanks again for all the input and discussion, I really appreciate it.

AVs will resist the -slow effect by 87%, so even with ice storm, snow storm, sleet, and blizzard you'd only hit about -24.7% -move speed. That is a lot of powers to put on an AV for so little return. I would also probably build ice/cold differently now that I've played a water/cold extensively. I'd still go dark mastery though, but I know a lot more about min/maxing a build now that I've made so many corruptor and defender builds (I'm confident I could get good recharge while having M/R softcapped). Even benumb is questionable for AVs IMO now due to everyone being able to take envenomed daggers for AV fights (still its one power and won't hurt much to take so I'd probably still do it).

 

Edit: for normal mobs, sleet+ice storm+blizzard should be more than enough to keep them in the rains.

 

Edit 2: yeah, I think I worked out a better build, you still take agility as it is great for defense, recharge, and end, but more importantly it allows you to take dark mastery more easily. It also gives you more recharge on sleet (a couple seconds), but I spam that power because it can stack on itself. This is softcapped to melee and range. If you wanted to hover above mobs you could take hover over combat jumping. You could do much more damage with a proc build, but your defenses and resists would suffer. You could go the mace shield proc route, but then you lose soul drain.....so up to you. I prefer this.

Water/Cold is much better in my opinion due to the heal in dehydrate. This allows you to forgo the medicine power pool in order to be fully self sufficient. Water also does more damage than ice. Cold domination is better on corruptors in my opinion because the values on sleet are the same and you get scourge and a higher base damage which is improved even more by going dark mastery for soul drain. Water's whirlpool may as well be a rain. I have a build for water/cold posted.

Wow i just took a look at the post - what a beast, very impressive build - it has a deciptive amount of utility too 


I notice you mentioned you were testing storm on corr and def - any update on this?

I feel that althought storm has better damage, in todays fast moving meta it struggles to keep up fast paced teams which might hurt it + its end heavy (no heat loss) and i worry since its a bit more involved that /cold it has more chances to hurt waters rotation?

I notice you mentioned you were testing storm on corr and def - any update on this?

The defender version performs better unless you are constantly teaming with a kin.

I prefer water/cold on teams. Storm is very good, but it needs more time to set up (casting lightning storm, freezing rain, and tornado). Both cold and storm is incredibly damaging, but I prefer cold for teams.

 

I also like the ease of cold a bit better. Heat loss gives you -res and solves any end issues. Sleet is a quick recharging STACKING WITH ITSELF -res rain (the same is true of freezing rain) and you get to proc out infrigidate if you want. You can also use the shields for Lotg

recharge. 

 

My water/cold can do +4x8 missions in Cimorea with only the alpha and this is the basic test I use for builds to be considered good. My water/storm needs ageless to do it and the storm/water can do it but a tiny bit slower. This may just be that I have no fully optimized the storm/water build yet though.
