I have been spending a lot of time looking at the logs due to tool development. There are some pain points I would like to bring up.

Major point. I do not want to see other players statistics in my characters logs. Concerns have been raised about using that kind of information being used to exclude players or builds due to not being mix-maxed enough.

Pain points:

  • Damage aura
    • Only logging one HIT roll per pulse regardless of how many HITs occurred
    • Currently every MISS is logged
    • Applies to psuedo pets
    • Suggestion: Log a message <power> HIT X targets
      • Allows for better idea of hit %
  • Proc
    • A proc logging does not have any information on what power triggered the proc
      • Suggestion: You hit Goliath War Walker with your Gladiator's Strike: Chance for Smashing Damage for 28.23 points of Smashing damage triggered by <power name>
  • Controls
    • Immobilze are logged different that all other controls
      • Instead of this standard message: You Hold Super Stunner with your Web Cocoon.
      • You get this: You attempt to immobilize Metal Smasher with your Wide Area Web Grenade!
      • Suggestion: You Immobilize Metal Smasher with your Wide Area Web Grenade!

  • Debuffs - biggest headache
    • -resists
      • No power based -resists are logged
      • Proc based -resists are logged, but without any proc name
        • All you get: You reduce your targets damage resistance temporarily
      • Suggestion: Log -resists using you lowered X targets resists
    • -defense, same as above
  • Buffs
    • Similar issues to debuffs, except some powers are logged, but usually w/o context
      • Fulcrum shift for instance: The Fulcrum Shift has increased the damage of your attacks!
        • No player information or quantity
        • Could be from me or another player
    • Other player's powers are shown in your logs w/o quantities
      • <player> HITS you! Temporal Mending power was autohit.

    • Suggestion: Buffs cast by yourself show log that explicitly

      • Example: You increase the damage of your attacks with Fulcrum Shift by X

    •

Suggestion: Without quantities buffs are not useful. Remove logging other players buffs.

It doesn't show other players performance already. Just yours. There's no reason to worry about this.

I think we need to focus on sustainable logging and be sure that we replant for future growth.

I recently saw a comment by a Code Dev.  What we call Logs are actually Chat messages created by the Powers.  It's all down to the specifications of the Powers as done by the Powers Devs throughout the history of City.  There's some changes coming, but it's a big glacier to icepick away on.

Print out the AT and power sets, include pool powers on character login.

This is getting a bit ... much to generally log, I'd think?

But if the team could put in an option or switch (cityofheroes.exe -detailpowerlogging) that did something like this specifically for "general mod development/testing," that would give more information the general userbase probably wouldn't care about, or would save in a separate log, I think it'd help in these scenarios.

(Honestly, I'd like to be able to strip logs more easily, too. Say, an -rplog that would catch broadcast/local/team/sg/emotes automatically but not hit rolls, LFG, request, that sort  of thing - or just more customizable logging in general. Back in the day there were times I'd basically take chatlogs and write them up as p osts - which took a lot of hand-creating macros to strip timestamps, repeated "HIT! You hit yourself with autopower/proc!" and combat logs out of the chat logs. The various tools out there that have popped up to do it always miss quite a bit - or remove the wrong things, even when messing with options.)

Since, I have working on this tool. I have gotten quite a lot of detail out the logs. There are lots of issues as I mentioned in the OP.

The auto hit stuff is annoying, but I can deal with them in a dedicated tool.

If I could get the AT and power sets I could look up the power and make better questions about which powers are firing which procs. Not perfect, but pretty close.

If there a specific feature you would to see. Post on the tool thread and I'll see what I can do.

Another suggestion.

Print out the AT and power sets, include pool powers on character login.

Then I could integrate City of Data information.

I want the server name mentioned as well.

The other possible way of executing it - we've got the $name $at, etc. strings. Being able to set your own login message, much like you can with your battlecry, SG MOTD, custom channel MOTD, etc. wouldn't hurt as an option - having it show up in your messages automatically as well, though, unlike the battlecry, just automatically on character login.
