KnightSoul Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 CoH is back, but we're often stuck using guides that have been banished to Astoria [glow=purple,2,300]the Wayback Machine[/glow]. Someone has to step up and provide an index for the new materials being written, so I'll suck it up and do the job. But before I get started clacking away at the keyboard, I need to figure out formatting and make several other decisions. That's where you, true believer, come in. 1) Format: Should I just crib Zombie Man's old formatting and sub divisions? If no, please demonstrate or link to alternate proposal. 2) Greytext placeholders for subjects with no guides? Highlight links like I did above? 3) Link to off site guides or not? (Link to Zombie Man's archived index will be featured regardless.) If this is a yes, I will need others to feed me the links. Indexing 5 pages on the forums here is doable for one. Searching the whole web isn't. 4) What was the format for linking to a specific post within a thread again? I'm an idiot. 5) Do all guides deserve to be indexed? There are some very small, very specific guides that I'm not sure how to index yet. 6) I won't be indexing builds, even popular ones. But if others do, I'll treat those as guides and give them their own section. They're simply too prolific for me to link every one individually. 7) Would anyone want to mirror any of this? We never know when CoH will once again be gone to the Americans, and having a backup somewhere in case the homecoming forum poofs would be nice. 8 ) Should I keep a section for threads/conversations that while not intentional guides are good resources? 9) Add a section for CoH culture? Guides to the lesbian mother father you won and stuff like that. You know, for the kids. Don't expect this to pop up overnight. I won't start till I get some feedback here, and then I'll probably still bring formatting examples round for more feedback.
_NOPE_ Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 AWESOME! I'd love to see this. 1) Format: Should I just crib Zombie Man's old formatting and sub divisions? If no, please demonstrate or link to alternate proposal. YES 2) Greytext placeholders for subjects with no guides? Highlight links like I did above? YES 3) Link to off site guides or not? (Link to Zombie Man's archived index will be featured regardless.) If this is a yes, I will need others to feed me the links. Indexing 5 pages on the forums here is doable for one. Searching the whole web isn't. YES 4) What was the format for linking to a specific post within a thread again? I'm an idiot. This is how you do it: 5) Do all guides deserve to be indexed? There are some very small, very specific guides that I'm not sure how to index yet. Why Not? 6) I won't be indexing builds, even popular ones. But if others do, I'll treat those as guides and give them their own section. They're simply too prolific for me to link every one individually. Sounds good to me 7) Would anyone want to mirror any of this? We never know when CoH will once again be gone to the Americans, and having a backup somewhere in case the homecoming forum poofs would be nice. I can mirror if you want, on my server. I'm already parsing Dev posts... 8 ) Should I keep a section for threads/conversations that while not intentional guides are good resources? Why Not? 9) Add a section for CoH culture? Guides to the lesbian mother father you won and stuff like that. You know, for the kids. Why Not? I'm out.
KnightSoul Posted June 29, 2019 Author Posted June 29, 2019 Thanks. I'll be starting the data entry now, hopefully have an outline later today and a first pass up in a day or two.
KnightSoul Posted June 29, 2019 Author Posted June 29, 2019 Here's the first outline. Section links are obviously blank, but there because I'm formatting, from a text document even. Under Construction! Please direct replies and questions to this forum post until such time as the orange title is removed. Seriously. This is an index of Player Guides, for players, by players. Thank you to everyone that contributes. This is a resurrection of Zombie Man's pre-shutdown Guide to Guides. You can find The undead Guide to the Guides (Zombie Man 4-21-12, I23) on the web archive. Its full of all the pre-shutdown guides that countless players wrote and an excellent resource. This Index will be focused on the material written for the I26 Homecoming servers. There only because I'm doing all the forum code markup manually and it would have been a pain to clean out the text for the example. They'll get filled once I have all 17 pages blocked out and ready to post. I've decided I'm coloring all the section headers yellow. Not sure what else might look good on the forum background for other uses.
_NOPE_ Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 You could use my BBCoder to make your life easier... I'm out.
KnightSoul Posted June 29, 2019 Author Posted June 29, 2019 You could use my BBCoder to make your life easier... I could, but this gives me an offline copy in simple text. And I'd have still left dead links in there as placeholders so I don't forget to insert them when I post the Index. I won't have urls until then. Cribbing from Zombie Man's Guide to Guide has made me realize, it would be great if I could get individuals to manage each AT's Index separately. That would allow those sections to be updated more frequently and let someone with passion for that AT choose which discussion threads are worth including with the outright guides. If someone went silent, I'd find a new caretaker for that AT and link to the replacement too. (And if I vanish, anyone willing to do the work can copypasta everything I leave up.) I'm looking for caretakers for each Archtype's Index. If you want to be the Hetman for your favorite AT, speak up and I'll put you on the master list. If someone has already started one, let me know about it too! Did I miss anything in my outline? (Other than Sentinels under ATs. Corrected in my docs.) Is there anything specific to Homecoming that should get its own section that I haven't included yet?

KnightSoul Posted June 30, 2019 Author Posted June 30, 2019 Its up and ready for submissions. Thunderstorm is passing through, and I lost internet once in the middle, so I may not actually get guides linked into it right away.
KnightSoul Posted June 30, 2019 Author Posted June 30, 2019 Its up and done. Well, done until someone points out an obvious mistake. Or I fill in those <placeholders> for mirroring. Annoyingly the forum software works fine with copypasta'd tab, but using a tab manually makes it freak out. I'll have to go fiddle with making everything pretty another day.

Just scanned it - look's great with room to grow...FWIW - Posts 17 & 18 on the thread are duplicates of 15 & 16. If you can't delete a post, you might just want to clear out 17 & 18 and reserve them for some future need or add-on...
