Paragon City is Convulsing. Choking.

Breaking under its own weight. Citizens in fear of the street.

Only YOU can step up to the challenge

and stop the forces of evil from taking over!

We want to make sure everyone who wants to be a Hero, Villain, or one of those fifty gray shades in between can do so, so this guide here is going to lay out just how you can get yourself all set up for to play.

First Steps

  1. Download the correct launcher for your operating system:
    • Windows users download Tequila, the official launcher for CoH: Homecoming
    • Mac users download Island Rum.  (The next few following steps are the manual configuration needed for Windows users, so if you're playing on Mac, skip down to the section "Installing on Mac".)

Installing on Windows

  1. Press ⊞-E (the Windows logo key and E at the same time) to open an Explorer window.  You can also click the folder button on your toolbar (in Windows 8.1 and 10) or select "Computer" in the Start menu (Windows 7).
  2. Go to"This PC" (Windows 8.1/10) or "Computer" (Windows 7).  Depending on your computer configuration, you will see one or more hard drives listed here.
  3. Make an installation folder for the game.  You can place CoH anywhere that isn't a protected location on your hard drive like the Program Files or Users folders.  If you don't know what that means and aren't sure where you can safely install the game, follow these steps:
    • Double-click on the C drive to open it

      image.png.720e304e1f6be6fc1f1eef84984f9c6e.png

    • Click "New Folder" on the toolbar, or right-click in an empty space in the window and choose "New > Folder"

      image.png.c41e1cab02135a676d14f083ad4f74bd.png

    • Rename it to "Games"
    • Open the "Games" folder
    • Create a new folder inside "Games" and name it "CoH".  This will be your installation folder
  4. Open the installation folder, drop Tequila inside and launch Tequila.  Tequila will ask you to select an installation folder.  Point it at the same place where you just put Tequila.  If you followed the steps above, it'll be "C:/Games/CoH".
Tequila will now start downloading the client files.  The files are about 5 gigabytes, so this will take a little while.

(That's all the steps you need for Windows.  Skip to the "After Installation" section below.)

Installing on Mac

  1. Move Island Rum to your Applications folder.  Open Island Rum.
  2. In the file selection window that appears, press the Up button next to "Path:" until you see the name of your hard drive in the list on the left.  Click your hard drive, then click Applications.
  3. Type "CoH" in the input box at the bottom, then click the Save button at the lower right.

Choose where Island Rum will install the CoH files

  4. If Island Rum asks to install anything, click OK. Island Rum will begin processing the download list and downloading files.

Island Rum is processing the download list

After Installation

  1. While you wait for Tequila or Island Rum to download the game files, make an account on these forums. Once you've verified your account, go to the game account page to create a username and password for the game.  You'll use this username and password at the City of Heroes login screen.

Location of the Game Account settings button

    Game Account management screen

  2. Once Tequila or Island Rum has finished downloading and verifying all the client files, make sure that the "manifest file" you're using is "http://patch.savecoh.com/manifest.xml".  Changing the manifest may require a few additional files to be downloaded.
    1. In Tequila, this is listed underneath the Play button.  If it's not the right manifest, click Options and add it to the list of manifests.
    2. In Island Rum, this is shown when you click Menu (the palm tree button) > Manifests.  If it's not the right manifest, type in the correct one.

  3. Now you're ready to select "Homecoming" or "Homecoming (64-bit)" from the list on the left and click "Play"!

I downloaded Tequila and put it in a C:/COH folder. It seems to have a bad manifest. How can I get the right one?

Make sure the folder and files aren't set to read only.  After fixing that, it started right up.

Easiest solution: Right-click the Tequila.exe icon and run it as an administrator. Acknowledge the safety warning and continue on - that should prevent any r/w errors since it already has permission since we're picking C drive.

Hey all just a PSA.

When I executed "tequila.exe," I was informed of a virus/malware install called "EK-Trickbot-malspam."  This particular threat is very dangerous.

You can learn more about "Trickbot" here.

https://www.cisecurity.org/white-papers/security-primer-trickbot/

Traditional Trickbot infections steal financial information.

"TrickBot is a modular banking trojan that targets user financial information and acts as a dropper for other malware. It uses man-in-the-browser attacks to steal financial information, such as login credentials for online banking sessions. The malware authors are continuously releasing new modules and versions of TrickBot."

Please exercise caution until this is explained or rectified.

Not sure if this has happened to anyone else or has been addressed before... tequila loaded fine, can get into a server fine, character creation is fine, get character into tutorial fine but once done the tutorial my loading into AP is kind of crashing.  Gets to about 50 to 75% loaded then freezes.  Waited about 30 minutes yesterday before it shut down and gave me some error codes dealing with sound like car horns, buses, etc... any thoughts out there?

I'm not able to get past the game's Log In screen, where I get a popup error telling me my user name and/or password are incorrect. To verify: my game id/password are the same as those for this forum, yes? If no, can someone set me straight? Much obliged!

... grab yourself a snack and have a wait, Tequila is going to download everything and this part will take a while.

How long is a while? It seemed to be slow but steady for about half an hour, but the progress bar has been sitting at about 1/8 for a long time and I can't tell if it's still going. Both the Tequila screen and the Activity Log say it's currently downloading geomBC.pigg, and there's a 0 KB geomBC.pigg.download file in the \piggs folder with the same timestamp as the Activity Log, which is now an hour and a half ago.

I'm on Windows 10 and my default browser is Chrome. (Though the browser shouldn't matter now that I'm using Tequila, right?) And I'm not real tech-savvy, so please be gentle.  :)  Like, even looking in the registry makes me nervous, never mind actually changing anything in it.

How long is a while?

That entirely depends on your internet connection.

Took me less than 10 minutes.

I used to play under the handle @Purple Clown, back on Live. Now I play under @Lunchmoney

I'm in the UK and play on Reunion.

I left it overnight and there's been no change for ten hours, so apparently something made it stop altogether. What's my next step? (Run Tequila again right now, delete everything not Tequila in \CoH first, delete everything in CoH including Tequila and start from scratch, something else?)
