Help with Fire/Atomic

So I felt like rolling a blaster for a change and went with Fire/Atomic.  Now I normally play melee and am clueless on how to set this thing up endgame.  Anyone got a crazy build for this pairing? Money is not an issue.  All I'm looking for is solid damage with decent defense to keep me from faceplanting as I seem to be quite good at that now.  I can't seem to turn off the brute/scrapper mindset.

 

Edit...Ok so did some research and found nothing on this combo but pieced together other builds and found something potentially decent but the experts here can guide me where I went wrong.  Could also use some advice on Incarnate stuff.  Is Clarion the go to since it has Status protection?  I normally go Ageless but that is mostly on AoE brutes with endurance issues and am not used to playing the more squishy sets.

I've got a recently-50-ed Fire/Atomic, and he does pretty well.  For me, I skipped the melee attacks in /Atomic, since Fire/'s got plenty of damage already, and focused on the Controls.  You definitely want Radioactive Cloud...the only reason to skip it is if you feel it's too cheap too use (seriously, it's a better AoE hold than Controllers or Dominators get), and that power alone really kinda substitutes for most of the defense you can need if you build for sufficient Recharge (which, thanks to Beta Decay, /Atomic is really good at).

 

As for the Destiny pick...I'm having trouble with it, too, but Clarion's probably the most practical.  I don't get mezzed much, but it's kind of a bummer when it happens.  Rebirth feels sorta redundant on a Blaster that gets most primary defenses via health/regeneration, and Ageless feels similarly redundant.  Barrier might not be too bad, but the longterm advantages of it don't do much to stack, IMO.  Still, I haven't completely decided.

Thank you for your advice. I couldn't find the numbers on radioactive cloud other than recharge in pines. But based on someone who uses it I'll swap out web cocoon. With the absorb proc on there that should help me stay off the floor.  I will probably go combat jumping instead of hover for a little lower end use and imob protection. I went with the melee since I'm going to be in melee range anyway and fire has almost no mitigation other than stuff dying faster. The melee attacks have kb and stuns included which I figured would also hlep keep me alive longer.

Ok, made some tweaks.  A little lower than I would like on S/L resists but capped defense to everything but negative and psi.

Nearly 150 people and only 1 person has a comment?  This is literally my first Blaster I have played past lvl 30 and there is nothing I could do to make it better?

I'm not an expert by any means but the Superior Entomb in Radioactive Cloud puts you in the red for those status resists (see 'view active sets window') which presents a different issue of how you can replace the defense set bonuses in Entomb. I look forward to seeing how you might resolve this. Good build I think otherwise though sorta expensive :)

I just made one of these yesterday so I'll be working on a build myself soon. However, a nephew was born a few minutes ago, so I'll be occupied and away from Pine's most of the weekend. But this is near the top of my todo list as far as CoH goes.

Good catch and thank you.  I couldn't find any way to recover the defense loss so I swapped out Ragnarok for Positrons Blast (and I really wanted to keep the absorb proc as well).  Slight decrease in damage on fire ball but increase when it procs.  Loss of perma hasten but only barely.  That should not be an issue when I am fighting as I will have extra recharge from Beta Decay and that gets me over perma with 2 in melee range. On the flip side I have slightly better recovery and more fire/cold resist. Helencarnate - Thanks for the great build! I was so impressed that I shamelessly stole and modified it for my own use with my Water/Atomic blaster Green H2O. The biggest difference is in Dehydrate  which gives me a bit of a heal which may come in handy with what being all up in the faces of those pesky villians. That change also allowed me to shave a few more seconds off hasten so its perma unless it gets debuffed of course. See my changes below and let me know what you think.

Would that heal hit with no accuracy slotted?  If so looks very tankey and would solo much better than fire and wow I did not do enough research.  Water has a bit less damage but some decent mitigation with KB and KU and could probably survive a bit longer.

Helen - if you give Hasten 50+5 IOs you can probably get by without Agility and go full Musculature.. that'd be a nice damage boost and I think with this you don't really need the other recharge since you have so many well slotted attacks. Thoughts?

 

Really awesome work on those defenses though, I want to give this build a go!

Update.  Got all the IOs now and working on Incarnate stuff and as long as there is no negative/psi or as long as I don't get hit with defense debuffs I can handle +4x8 without issues.  Just got Clarion up to 120 seconds so no need to worry about mez for the most part anymore.  I still face plant in a hurry if a debuff hits but otherwise I can just play like a brute/scrapper and run in and blow stuff up and don't have to worry if I go one way and the team goes another.  I did decide on Hover/Fly instead of Combat Jumping because well she is a demon with wings so it just fits better.

My biggest issue there was not the recharge, it was that it would bring me below 45% defense to S/L/F/C.  Not much lower but even 2.5% means I am getting hit 50% more often (roughly).  On a Brute I would not mind but with lower resists and under 1700 HP I would rather stay above the soft cap for those without inspirations.  So I decided to see if I could squeeze any more defense so I could swap out the Alpha slot.  Since I found my end bar hardly even moves, I found an extra slot from Stamina and put more defense in Combat Jumping and swapped out Mako's for Touch of death and poof, 45% or better to S/L/F/C/E.  Still of course the Psi and Negative holes but that is what lucks are for.  Now to figure out which interface helps kill AVs faster.  I know -Regen and -HP both help but not sure which will have the greatest effect on those targets if I decide to do something crazy and try to solo TFs.  My (maybe) final build.

So someone gave me a thumbs up and I looked at this thread again and wow that is an old build.  I hated the scatter effect on Rain of Fire and swapped it out for the snipe once I no longer needed 22% to hit.  I moved some other things around as well and procced out Positron Cell which turns it into some great damage for a low level attack.  Now this one is a bit more endurance hungry but not terrible.  I just have to remember to turn off sprint on AV fights and every once in a while pop a blue to keep it in check.  With this one I was able to do a solo MITF.  Granted at only +1 so they were even level but still.

WRT the build above:  I don't run tough (it's a mule) and my defenses are 50.7% S/L, 45% E - which is the majority of endgame stuff.  He is nowhere near as survivable as my /Devices or /TacArrow (the -percep/-tohit powers are incredible), but he's a decent AoE beast.  Aim+BU+Inferno, then Atom Smasher any stragglers.

 

Like the Rad Melee set, Positronic Fist is annoying as all hell (unless soloing).  WAY TOO LONG of an activation.  I'm usually kill-stolen when in groups, and you're left sitting there for about 3 seconds not doing any damage.  That's a lot of time wasted with a Fire Blast primary.

Similar as all fire blasters:  for single-target:  Blazing Bolt, Blaze, Fireball, Flares as filler.  Recharge is such that I only use Fireball when more than 1 mob, and I'll go flares/electron shackles if mezzed.

 

If I am still in the middle of a group from Inferno, I'll toss in an Atom Smasher or Positronic Fist just for fun.  More damage is realized from blasting, I feel.  At least when not "blapping"

 

If you like to blap, then I'd go Blaze, Blazing Bolt, Negatron, Atom Smasher/Fireball.  Positronic Fist as finisher due to long animation/activation.  Problem with blapping is the excessively long activations.  I almost never do it unless bored of blasting and want a change-up.  Otherwise, I'm nearly 100% BB, Blaze, FB, Flares.

Hi Helen,

 

really great build. I love playing it, currently have my incarnates at T3, but T4 is not far!

 

I tweaked it a tiny bit to squeze a bit more Def and Res out of it (only 2-3% but evry bit counts sometimes). Also switches to Superspeed for being invis. I happyily switch between Desitny powers, so i can Incad ppl arround on 50 TFs 🙂

 

The build is nopt  cheap but you got a lot bang for the bucks  😄

 

On long fights i might need a blue or just use the End power from P2W but End is really fine otherwise.

I'm back after a bit of a break.  Covid tried to kill me but failed and have been playing other stuff but decided to come back home.  This is where she is at now.  Positron Cell I found works great as a proc monster and is now in my regular rotation instead of just as something to hold bosses when needed.  Run into spawn (which debuffs to hit and increases recharge), nuke if available, if not then Fireball, Atom Smasher then pick off stragglers with ranged attacks.  Hard targets I just have my attacks in order of DPA and use whatever the highest DPA attack that I have available.  Although I have actually been playing my sent more since she has better single target damage.

First of all, welcome back!

 

Next, if you are only 1-slotting Aim (or Buildup), I like to throw in the Gaussian proc.  It fires off almost every time due to the lack of recharge (it's a 1 ppm proc), so I usually put it in Aim.  This way, I can alternate Aim and BU (Ionize, in Atomic's case) for consistent +dam; with the rare Aim+BU for a nuke or something.  I like options.

 

Since this thread and my original build post (which had more melee), I've since learned the "real power" behind /atomic for blasters:  abusing the AoE Hold, Radioactive Cloud.

 

Atomic is the best secondary for mez, IMO.  As such, I've re-tooled the toon and made it fairly cheap (as I don't really play it as much).  Positron Cell (single target hold) hits for more damage than other secondary sets' hold power, and is fast casting (which is not so good for proc'ing, but great for stacking holds).

 

I was thinking to make an ice/atomic hold machine, but that just seemed boring, outside of maybe a hami raid.
