Does anyone have an Illusion/Storm build?

Recommended Posts

I had gotten to 43 as my 1st character and then stopped playing it. I would like to revisit her but I really need a good build to repec into and work towards. I was not enjoying the /storm aspect of it but I am sure I am just not built right as many ppl say if you use a KB to KD io here and there it really changes things and the set itself is a good damage set. If anyone has a mids/pines build they can share I would appreciate it.

Like I've said in a similar thread over Reddit, illusion and storm are a bad pairing. Your Tornado and Lightning Storm will make enemies run away to the other end of the map (with Tornado following and aggroing everything) and Illusion lacks tools to hold them in place. Anything else has mass immobilizes that would do the trick.

I have a L50 Ill/Storm/Psy and the only advice I can give is to avoid the KB>KD IOs.  Embrace the chaos.  Below is my build.  I only have basic IOs in most slots, though with 5x Dampened Spirits in Hurricane and 6x Kinetic Crash in Tornado (Kinetic Crash is the cheapest set to get you the 7.5% Recharge bonuses)

*EDIT*

Keeping in mind that the above was my leveling build.  I need to re-adjust it so I can get rid of the AOE hold and SS/CJ in favor of Hover/Fly/Afterburner

Here is my build, without Incarnates/Accolades planned.

I think that Illusion/Storm works great, because Illusion is the Control set that embraces "damage without Containment" since it lacks Immobilizes... and Storm adds in a lot of damage that also doesn't use Containment. It also works well with throwing powers around a corner: PA, Freezing Rain, Tornado, and Spectral Terror, then once the mobs are falling down and aggroed on PA you can come around and add in Lightning Storm.

An AoE Immob would be great, but it works well without one. It also has a great build synergy, in that you're trying to build for max Recharge for PA, and this also helps put out Tornado, FR, and Lightning Storm more often.

The build is almost perma-PA, but with the Force Feedback procs firing (at a 90% rate when Tornado and LS are put out, and you can put out about 5 casts in total during a minute), you should run with perma-PA in every fight. That's before using Gale on mobs that are on Freezing Rain's patch to knock down everyone... and get a practically guaranteed activation on FF if you're hitting enough of them.

it can work without an aoe immob. I mean few corrs, defs, or mm's make use of that tool and storm ranges from good to amazing for them.

two places i'd slot the KD IO are gale and tornado. it turns nado into a legit damage dealing option in almost all scenarios. In gale it gives you a rapid cycle aoe knockdown. Not on par with earthquake, but in the same ball park with enough recharge.

I leave it out of hurricane and LS. I skirt the edges of the spawns and continuously circle the group, so when hurricane tosses someone it throws them into the center of destruction. LS is usually set up away from the group so when it knocks them it pushes them back toward the kill zone. However, a KD IO in LS might let you summon it right in the middle of the spawn to maximize it's small aoe damage.

The flee mechanic is generally overruled by the taunt of PA. However, PA won't grab everyone, so that's why you continually bounce around the edges pushing those that try to flee back in. You can generally pack a mob pretty tight which maximizes everyone's aoe better.

Expensive but what isn't?

Perma Hasten, Perma PA, Perma Patron pool pet (its free damage why not?).

208% recharge

56% S/L resist

Capped cold resist

You need to run Cardiac and Ageless Incarnate because end use is pretty high.

I like Leviathan Mastery because it gets its AoE at tier 1 which lets you heavy slot two powers. Water Spout is amazing damage per activation time and works well with your Tornados.

The Summon is because we have tanks to tank for use (Perma PA) so why not have another perma range attacker for free DPS (once Phantasm gets its AI fixed)?

Your almost a MM with 3 invicible tanking pets and 2 range support pets.

I don't use Hurricane. Never needed it. But if you have a real hardon for it you can replace Arcane Bolt with it.

For single target DPS I don't think this Controller can be beat. Even has a decent single target rotation in Spectral Wounds and Arcane bolt alternated.

I don't use Hurricane. Never needed it. But if you have a real hardon for it you can replace Arcane Bolt with it.

For single target DPS I don't think this Controller can be beat. Even has a decent single target rotation in Spectral Wounds and Arcane bolt alternated.

Hey as a precursor to this which will be expensive and take me some time to achieve, which sets would you suggest for deceive, arcane bolt, spectral terror, thunder clap, water spout, lightning storm? I dont know too man fresh 50 who can get anywhere near those for a while.

Thank you

I hit 50 like 3 days ago and have only a few purple sets to go till I am done.

Basically I made level 25 common IOs at level 22. Used them all the way to 50 (still have some of them now) and directly transitioned to the build shown.

I bought key procs first: +3% Def from Glad and Steadfast, end recovery from Panacea, Shifter and Miracle. Then 5 x Luck of the Gambler recharge, 2x Force Feedback + recharge and finally damage procs.

A cheap way to do this is make cheaper set and enhancement convert into a set you want.

After that I made all the non purple sets (Red Fortune, Stupefy, Gaze of the Brazilian, etc).

Don't believe in transition sets they cost to much for something you just replace. With just common lvl 25 IOS at 50 your biggest issue will be defence and end recovery. For end recovery you will need Cardiac and Ageless. After 2 days I had t3 everything and got my t4 Ageless after 3.

I might go with something like:

I really like Leviathan for both thematic reasons (Water Spout) and the fact that Hibernate doubles as a self-heal and endurance management mechanism.

I skipped Spectral Wounds because it's not as good as Arcane Bolt. I skipped Deceive because I've never found single target Confuse all that worthwhile except as a CP mule - it simply takes too long to do anything useful. I skipped Flash because it's just unnecessary.

Over on the Storm Summoning side, skipping Snow Storm means that fliers will potentially give you trouble. Skipping the mediocre Thunder Clap loses you nothing - a Mag 2 PBAoE Disorient just isn't going to help you.

The single target damage rotation (Blind/Arcane Bolt) can be shorted on slots if there's a need for slots elsewhere - it's not terrible important anyway.

One thing you might want to try on an Ill/Storm is the Spectral interface. It gives a proc (10-25%) of a 4 second Mage 2 Immo on hit. Stacks up to 4 times (8 mag).

Now I know Interface is bugged with regards to proccing but that seems mainly to do with the damage DoTs.

Was messing around in the Comic Con farm and I noticed far fewer runners and much better DPS uptime on my Tornados and Waterspouts.

If they can stack onto Immoing an AV that would be great.

More testing required.

*edit*

Okay after some testing with just the 15% chance to Immo there are some quirks. Freezing Rain does not tend to proc it well (possibly a side effect from PPM changes?) but Phantasm (plus Decoy) and Phantom Army seem to proc it well.

Now as to wether the DoT changes are a bug or a nerf (someone was claiming that it was like this on one of the BETA servers on live) it seems the Immo part works well. Now this Immo may not mean much for a regular Controller who has AoE and ST Immo but for a Ill/Storm is great for setting up Containment or more importantly keeping enemies from running away and stationary.

Now as to how well they will work against AVs (especially +4 ones) I am not too sure. You maybe need the T4 with the 25% Immo chance to know for sure. AVs only have mag 3 protection against Immo so you only need 2 procs to pin them. I could see it working.
