Hey all, nice to meet you!
City of Heroes was probably the game that has the most impact on making me want to get into game development, and since I've had a bit of a career on that front, I wanted to celebrate the game using my current hyperfixation.
In order to scratch my unceasing game design itch, I've been putting together a rough initial draft for a fully draftable Magic set set in the City of Heroes world. As a warning, I am not thinking too hard about balance at this point, and since it's not official in any way, I'm designing things in a way that Wizards of the Coast likely wouldn't do. I keep the borders bright pink as a way to show they're not official too!
Here's some of the notable design decisions I've made!
Each colour gets a signature player counter! White uses Experience, Blue uses Rads from the Fallout set, Red uses Energy and Green uses Poison. For Black, I've created a new counter called Souls, that vanish on your upkeep, but can pay for Energy costs only on opponent's turns.
Nemesis related cards tend to do things involving emblems.
There are a LOT of enchantments. Enhancements, characters that are all particle effects, and sagas for story arcs all use enchantment as a type.
For the most part, I'm trying to take screenshots for each card, but I managed to find the Art Book from the City of Villains collectors edition lying around my house, so there's a sprinkling of that too. Additionally, for my cycle of Classes to represent the archetypes, I did grab characters from the costume thread here. Hopefully thats okay!
There's a cycle of lands that use the World supertype. In a limited format, that could be interesting to de-ramp your opponent by playing a World over theirs, but I'd probably never want to put that into wider magic. Good thing this set should only be drafted like a cube!
I love that I get to use the Hellion creature type in the way that I am.
Overall, I'm just really excited about the project and wanted to show it off!
As an addition, I want to make a cycle of Avatar creatures that represent player character types. My two Badge Hunter cards I have so far represent this. While I don't necessarily want to just open the doors to asking who wants to be taken, if you see me on Everlasting, there's a chance you could end up on a card!
(Also please ignore the set codes in the names of the cards. During development, these help keep my cards in order! They'll be removed before I make the set playable somehow.)
