Oooooooooo ok that is as clear as mud. I get what you are saying but nothing in the game explains that and the tool tip for the thing affecting my character does not say anything like that. I can totally see how that is what is going on, but that is not what is being shown to the player at all. I am sure this is not exactly important to anyone but man that is not conveying the right information since it makes it look like I am getting debuffed by my own power not that I am getting a free pet from my power.

Any time I hit an enemy with either Gloom or Dark Blast an Icon shows on my hud as if I was getting the debuf from the power. It does not appear to be changing my hit chance but something is clearly wrong here.
