No, it's not.  This isn't (strictly speaking) a pirate server.

If NCSoft wanted these servers shut down, they would have been.  Months ago.  Their decision not to do so, represents a state of tacit permission for them to operate.

While this is a great way for you to justify picking and choosing which illegal activities it is moral for you to be an active participant in, it also invalidates your entire position, both on the morality of copying characters and on trying overly hard to generate fear over server shutdown on this issue.

"If Disney wanted these servers sued, they would have been.  Months ago.  Their decision not to do so, represents a state of tacit permission for players to copy characters."

That would be just as valid as your own statement. So do stop trying to pretend you're on some kind of moral high ground. Bottom line is very simple, you don't like something and believe everyone else should fall in line with what you want. Sorry, but my world does not revolve around you so I have to say...no.

    On to something else...

One thing people need to remember about when the Marvel suit against CoH happened. Back in the late 90's and early 00's, companies didn't really know what to do about the internet. CoH wasn't the only thing Marvel was going after, nor was Marvel the only company that was targeting anything online that used its IP in any way, whether it was for-profit or not. For example, there was a time when even putting a home-made D&D module online would get a C&D from the game's makers. Marvel's suit was at the tail end of that period, which is when those IP holders finally began to realize that fansites using their IP generated interest in their product rather than took away from it. So, if we could make a Mickey Mouse clone that beat up bad guys with his male genitalia, THAT would likely get Disney's interest, as it denigrates the image of their IP. Someone playing "Iron Dude" in a copy of Iron Mans costume? One should be more worried about the Zombie Apocalypse, as that has better odds judging by the last almost decade.

  2. FYI, as far as merits of the King's Row and Laura Lockhart arcs you mentioned earlier, I've been tracking the new merit rewards of all arcs as I do them, and they're not much.

Shauna Stockwell's Superadine Ring gives 6 merits

Eagle Eye's Lords of Death gives 6 merits

Laura Lockhart's Collateral Damage gives 4 merits.

Can't tell you how long they take as I tend to take my time and read everything, but I think SSA 1.1 still grants far more merits per minute than any of those.

  3. ...there is not fun in having a base that you don't have to work for...

There is no fun in not having to worry about prestige for those who enjoy the art of base-building, because earning prestige is NOT part of the fun of designing and building bases. If I want to level quickly to 50 there are numerous avenues open to me to earn XP quickly. If I want to IO out my builds from level 10 to 50 with the sets that I want, regardless of cost, there are ways that I can actively earn influence quickly. If I want to build a kick-ass base with tons of space and have anything I want in it, if you got your way, I can......have no choices whatsoever to actively gain prestige, aside from inviting players to join and treating them like prestige-monkeys. Not something I'd be ok with.

So, working for prestige might be fun to you, however, it would be a step backward for what the actual fun of base-building is about.

Not to mention that back when the game was live you could buy prestige for influence, and it was dirt simple to become a billionaire. That was done, no doubt, so that base builders could actually apply their creativity.

  4. This would be rightly condemned as an absurd arrangement. It remains absurd here; and right at this moment when we have a lot of new players coming in who haven't internalised the market being horrible to use - who may in fact have played MMOs with non-horrible market interfaces (where of course it is perfectly possible to make money by being patient and clever) - is the time to get rid of this absurdity.

Your dislike of the way they chose to do marketing here does not make it absurd, horrible to use, or any of the other pejoratives you use to try to bolster your arguments against it, because you have no arguments to make your view right (least of all trying to make it about new players). You only have opinion, just as the rest of us also only have opinion of what we prefer. So, you might be better off not assuming your opinion = indisputable facts of the universe.

Having played games with both styles, IMO this one is far better to BOTH buyers and sellers than what you are advocating. The reasons for this have already been stated by others in this thread, so I am also in the like it as it is now camp.

  5. You now have the power to run your own server! You're no longer beholden to the whims of others! Expend that effort making your own perfect CoH world! Why try to tear down someone else's sandbox when you can build up your own?

"You now have the power to run your own server!" ignores the massive necessity of the "massively multiplayer" bit of "MMORPG" which at the moment homecoming is monopolizing. So yes, we're allowed to criticize them for running their servers poorly.

Yes you are, if they wish to allow you do so on their own forums, and IF they are indeed doing as you claim. However, doing a poor job is not equal to not doing what you want. That's just being a self-entitled *****.

  6. You act like this would be different if they PI door piked to 50. It wouldn't. But that's somehow okay, I guess, because reasons? Where's the calls to nerf that?

The person who does this already knows the game. I very much doubt there will be "LFG to PL" from level 50's all over the server to make brand new people believe that is how the game is played in the manner that the DFB spam does.

It appears that the devs and GMs are not looking to have a server that freezes a moment in time for nostalgic people to just come and play on until their nostalgia is sated and they go away. They appear to want to continue to develop and expand the game as best they can. This means, even if they don't have to worry about the game having an income, they do have to try to attract new players. As we already saw when AE was first introduced, if a newbie's first exposure to the game is leveling to 50 in a few hours, they'll be gone in even less time after that. That's why its bad for the game for DFB to be taking up 90% of LFG chat. Making it still viable for getting through the first 20 levels (which it is, even nerfed), but not as attractive to exclusively do, is a good compromise between what's good for the game as a whole and what the players want.

That's the problem. Players always want what they want without concern over the consequences. People running a game have to think about those consequences, and that means making decisions that people won't like, without having to give reasons those same people will like or accept.

  7. If they simply want to stop people from leveling in DFB to 50 why not simply make it so once your Lv 23, the xp goes to 1 xp per mob or whatever?

They have that little graph but how did they get said graph? Cause if they had even run the actual thing in testing, they would notice it is not what is happening. I remember getting Lv 8 or more on first run in a full group, i barely got lv 6 this time in a full group. So they either mixed up some code somewhere or horribly broke something.

Given the wildly different experiences of people on full teams, this is likely more observational bias than fact. You got to 8 in 1 run, another got to 10 in 1 run, another got to 10 in 2 runs, another got to 20 in 3 runs....and soon. Maybe they did break something....maybe...but it makes no sense that everyone who thinks that reports different results in the levels they made before the change.

  8. I agree 99% that there is no legal risk to end users for playing this game.  Lack of precedent is just a temporary thing.  100% of new legal precedents had 1 thing in common - there was no legal precedent before.  So just because something hasn't happened before doesn't mean it can't.  As for actual precedent look at music sharing sites and their end users who were sued for downloading MP3's illegally.  Both the end user and the hosting platform were sued, and many of those cases were won.  No one playing this game has any legal leg to stand on - not Homecoming, not end users.

Again, I highly doubt that NCSoft is going to go the way of the music industry of the 2000's, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking this is 100% risk free

And as for the game disappearing, there is a large portion of the community who is coming to play this specifically because it is out in the open.  Despite being murky legally, it's public, it's supported, and it's huge (relatively speaking).  Knock out those 3 things and it's going to cease to be an option for many (not all) people.

So the code won't disappear, but having a large population on fully supported and relatively cost free servers, with updates, could.  Additionally hosting your own illegal private server does have legal precedent against, and lots of it...

I agree there is a lot of FUD - not trying to add to it, but no one should play the game with blinders on...

TL;DR - There is extremely little legal risk to end users playing on Homecoming, but it not 100% risk free

Those people that were sued by record labels were participating in file sharing. So the uploading of the content is what got them sued for copyright infringement, not the downloading. It's just that in file sharing they happen to be one in the same.

Not to mention that they quit going after people 10 years ago. They lost as many of the suits as they won, and most of the "wins" were actually people who settled rather than going to trial. Not likely that any entity is going to go that route because the expense far outweighs the gain.

  9. *get's popcorn*

LOL just wait until they nerf brutes as they slowly remove every tool for farming or the economy on this server. Don't think brutes aren't on the list of 'farming issues'.

They're moving so slowly, in fact, that they've yet to actually remove even one farming tool.

It is a slow burn your right, I'm going to need more popcorn.

This is going kinda like gas prices, slowly rising (or in this case removing effectiveness), while letting everyone get adjusted to the new status quo until suddenly, look everyone $20/gallon it's our lucky day!

You remind me of those people who, after every patch, would loudly proclaim that the game would end because of (fill in the blank) change. And then went on about how they were right when the game finally shuttered, years later. So, when your prediction fails to come true, are you going to fess up to being wrong, or just continue to stress that its "just around the corner"?

  10. Tru dat!  This from a fellow ancient gamer who also knows what a dangerous place the web (and associated games) can be for a kid.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive, or not very realistic.  As for how the devs here handle it, how about letting the people (the aforementioned devs) whose asses are the ones actually on the line if it all goes south, decide what legal maneuvers they have to jump through in order to keep doing the volunteer work that, in turn, keeps us playing this FREE game?

See, now you're just really showing your age. Don't you know these days everything is "its all about me!"

  11. *get's popcorn*

  12. Also, how is your difficulty set up? If you're fighting as too many heroes or too much higher level opponents your fights are going to last longer than your end recovery can sustain at level 22.

I slot all my toggle users with sets that give me 1 or 2% recovery. Get about 5 of those (which is the maximum) and those small bonuses on paper make a surprising QOL difference. Usually, for level 22, it only takes 2 of each set for the recovery bonus.

  13. You don't need all this extra enforced garbage, or even to try and apply shitty age restrictions on video games THAT NEVER WORK. How disconnected from the internet are you people?

Duh!  And you're calling them disconnected from the internet?

They have stated an age restriction and you have to click to agree.  If someone underage gets on, that means they lied to do so and that's beyond their control.  I mean, oh my god, there are literally thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of games and apps out there with this kind of stuff.  Have you been under a rock the past 20 years?

Hey now, maybe he's just old and doesn't understand this newfangled interwhatsis thingy. In his day they didn't need to restrict nothing. In fact, you were too busy working 36 hours a day down at the mine, after hiking naked in 6 feet of snow uphill both ways, to play some videe-o game. (as opposed to me who's old and remembers the pre-interwhatsis thingy, and trying to untangle your phone cord enough to stick it in the phone-shaped modem holder and THEN go work in the mine since it would finally be connected by the time you got home, if you were lucky...)

  14. I didn't know about the Merit Buffs for the TFs SFs of the like but I wonder if it was truly a big enough buff to make it worthwhile still?  Some of those Arcs and and other runs would take hours on end to finish with little gain which made a lot of old players avoid them like the plague.  The rewards need to be inticing enough to the point where a lot of us Old Players will even bother doing them again.  *Thinks back to the lengthy Positron and Silver Mantis Task forces and weeps deeply*

From the story arcs I've played so far, you get 60% more than you used to (plus or minus a couple of percentage points). I haven't come close to playing them all, or even most, and I haven't done a TF yet, so I don't know if they just did a +60% buff or if they're using a different formula for determining merits and its just coincidence everything I've run has been about 60%.

  15. Trust would be less of an issue if the community was more involved in the development cycle.

Given that the issue is currently about the size of a subatomic particle, becoming less of an issue is really not relevant.

The rest of this is not addressed to the person I quoted, its just a general confusion. I think what gets to me most is how people can go on about trust AFTER they have downloaded and installed software from this team. If you don't trust them then why on Earth would you do something so monumentally stupid??!! And to the OP, yes, you are here to stir up drama and trouble. I'm always amazed that people think they are so sneaky that no one could possibly figure out what they're really up to when they are so damn obvious about it.

  16. I think a "Hey, if you get it working, we'll think about it" would set a lot of minds at ease.

The problem with making even vague statements like that is, in the minds of gamers, everything you mention is a promise. Say the HC team make just such a statement and 6 months down the line someone comes up with something that purports to do what you're talking about. If HC doesn't immediately jump on the bandwagon you'll have another big hue and cry how they "broke their promise" and how this "proves they're out to get the other servers" and so on and so forth. If you've spent anytime on game forums you see that, one of the main reasons devs don't talk about future content until its nearly ready, doing so always bites them on the ass if they have to change or abandon the concept. I can guarantee you, after a statement like that, a year from now people will be angrily asking why the backup client isn't done and why hasn't the HC team gotten it out to us. Their minds can't most of that sentence, they will just read "We'll make one for you" instead.

Further, this kind of inter-server software is a fantasy. You have I24-based servers that seem to want to freeze that moment in time. I24 servers that want to expand in their own direction from that starting point. And this I25 server which intends to further expand and develop the game from there. As time goes on, the characters will become more and more difficult to integrate. You already have the problem of what happens to a character that is a Sentinel AT here, not to mention that I25 has more power proliferation than I24. Its really not in their best interests to agree to even consider this. All questions, no answers, except from people who would have no clue how to build it, but just think they do.

I know how you feel, I'd hate to lose my characters again. However, there's no point worrying about what I can't fix. You can set up your own private server and, effectively, export your characters to it through costume saves and just setting the characters levels/gear with the admin tools.

  17. Regardless of how effective he is (tankers and scrappers are always effective), I have a joke character. He has no memory from before waking up beneath rubble in Galaxy City during the shivan attack. But he knows exactly who he is. He is the universe's answer to the eternal question*. He is... The One Who Cares!

*The eternal question is "Who cares?"

So does he fit in with the lost drunken men who don't know where they are, but do care or the men who know where they are and care, but don't drink.

  18. Since Respecs are handed out rather freely now, maybe they could do something like this for the Terra Volta trial to bring back the value of actually doing the mission again.

    Just a suggestion.

While they're at it, they should just give you a level 50, and let you pop in any powerset or AT you want. For that matter, just give you all the Incarnate stuff you want, too. Oh, hey...they should send someone over to give you a massage while they're at it, after all, you've no reason to actually play, so they may as well do something for you for logging on.

  19. Reformed Skull Girl (dark blast/kinetics) - sadly, I've forgotten the 50's exploitation movie-like bio I had for her. I'll have to make a new one.

Sidesplitter, who is, of course, claws/regeneration

The holiday terror...Santa's Claw (Kris Krinkle and his elfish mob)

Dr Maxwell Edison, a war mace/super reflexes brute

Max Velocity, who sadly used the very slow looking Kinetic Melee.

  20. So you're mad they took the "I win" aspect out of the game. You're upset because they made it still WAY more rewarding than Live ever was. You don't like playing with people who have strategies for playing together and want to do what you want to do when you want to do it regardless of how it affects others... got it. Well have fun on your private server. I have no desire to play in your sandbox seems like it's just an "I win" server which would get old real fast.

Your the Man!!...errr...I mean the Bread!
