I honestly suspect most haven't. Hence why I thought quoting those could be helpful. I have personally learnt a lot from this topic already, and must say while I partially understood the people sending me tells, I have a much better idea of where they are coming from now. While my main point is sadly something far too common in the internet, I felt like it could be an interesting thing to bring up here. Maybe a few people can learn from some of the posts in this topic much like I have. 😊 I had seen those graphs but also did not think about bringing them up. I must say, the ratios are kind of scary to see... Maybe it comes down a little bit to the fact that it is very easy to make a farmer and speed up the process for a few things that many of us don't have time for anymore in our day-to-day lives. The irony here is that AE farming (although some may enjoy it) is potentially the most dull type of grinding in the game, same maps, same mobs, same build, over, and over, and over again. I suppose the popularity stems from time efficiency.

Well, since we are talking specifically about my mentality, I did in fact reflect on it. I dislike quoting myself, but seeing it has been lost amidst several pages of discussion, I will do it just to illustrate the point. I noted that I reflected on my interaction with the player here: And I noted that I reflected on my choices of how to play the game here: However, the more important point to why I decided to bring all of this up in the first place (although my point was mildly lost through frustration and bias): Although my mentality was also flawed, it did not initially impact anyone else playing the game other than myself. This player (and others), chose to actively seek someone who had been playing the game to voice their mentality. This is where my issue came in. You could say that by posting my (obviously biased) version of events in here I have done the same as they have. I would personally disagree, as this is a public forum, and not anyone's inbox. But that too is up for debate.

🤣 I believe it partly comes from having left my home country at a very young age. I went through my schooling and work alongside people from several different continents. Not to mention the plethora of different cultural backgrounds and opinions. Sooner or later, you learn that there are certain things about people that you might never fully understand, and you just have to accept them. That said, often times I am blinded by frustration, but I'll go on a limb and say that is not a flaw exclusive to me. 😛 I am extremely glad that you, and some others, have decided to voice an opposing opinion when it comes to this. Like I said earlier, I was incredibly frustrated, and the OP was a rant. The goal of the post was never to become a "you have my sympathies" or a social opinion discussion post in the first place. Although I appreciate all of those who are passionate and have taken it into those directions, the idea was to discuss a mentality about something that is part of the game. At no point did I mean to diminish or insult anyone, specially not the one player from that interaction. I meant to bring up something I saw as an issue in a mentality that is not unique to one person in this community. That mentality is what I wanted to address and, to a certain extent, pull apart. All of it makes a lot more sense with this. Since that interaction I have heard slightly different tellings of these events from the live servers, and little by little I can relate it a little more to my opinion about things in other games that I play/played. At the end of the day, the goal is to have more people think like you: Edit: Just to clarify, I don't mean this in anyone's everyday lives (although that would be great), but when it comes to things like dislikes of the AE or whatever other concept in a different game. Try and keep this related to the game.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you have not been through your own things, But going through one situation doesn't "thicken" your skin for all situations. Although I don't agree with everything PaxArcana has said, this one line speaks very truly against many of the points that have been made about people getting offended: Just because someone gets affected by something you do not (or the other way around), doesn't make them any "weaker" or "stronger." Much less mean that they cannot survive "the real world." In fact, all of those people do survive the real world. It just turns out the things that bother these people are not the same things that might bother you. In fact, the thing that bothers you might be people getting bothered! I don't know you, but it could very well be. Everyone has been through their own things, and in the internet we never know what those things were. While we can voice our opinions, that is all they are. Opinions. Specific to our situation, whereas we are talking with people from all sorts of different cultures and backgrounds. No one will be objectively right or wrong, specially given the fact we have no idea where their ideals come from in the first place. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you or I think, or anyone else for that matter; Arguing social constructs in the internet is a moot point, and we will never come to a universal agreement on this. Although this has spiraled into a large social opinion discussion, that was not the point of the post. The point was to talk about a mentality when it comes to certain aspects of the game. That is not to say we can't talk about opinions and social constructs, but expecting a mutual understanding and a good outcome from this on the internet is just silly.

For the people that do get offended/triggered over something, this is often what it comes down to. Someone stumbles on you on accident once, they might say they are sorry and move on, you ignore it. A second person stumbles on you on accident, and say they are sorry, you ignore it. By the tenth time in a day, it might become too much to ignore. Even though each and every person apologized (assuming they did), that doesn't change the fact that it did in fact happen in the first place. This stumble vs kick analogy is a little bit hard to work on, but I think it still can make a point. To everyone who thinks they are thick skinned: Think back on situations on your life and wonder if there was never a situation where you wound up belittling someone due to frustration with something else. A salesman, a waiter, someone younger than you, someone on the internet... A family member? I guarantee at some point in your life you have. Many of the people that get offended/triggered by something do so due to repeated interactions, not a single one. That isn't to say this is always the case. No matter how thick/thin skinned you are, if something happens enough times, it will eventually get to you. While I agree someone should not have to go about their day constantly worrying about how "thin skinned/frail people" around them are feeling, people should take the time to understand that sometimes it isn't just a single action that gets to these people. Empathy is a strong and important word. Belittling a group of people will never get you anywhere. Try instead to understand why they are in the situation they are. It might turn out that it is indeed someone just blowing something completely out of proportion. But it might also turn out that they are just fed up, and you might have been too if you had been through what they were. As for the retaliation thing. I think that happens too often nowadays, and I hate it. (maybe it did in the past as well, but I think I never paid attention to it) Two wrongs will never make a right. But then again, maybe it was just the last straw for that one person, so it is always hard to gauge. This is exactly it. When it comes to the subject of the game, rather than some complex social interaction discussion, this is what it comes down to. If anything in the game brings you to argue/discuss/judge/belittle other players, you will drive players away. Sometimes from you, other times from the game itself. When there is a large enough part of the community that has this similar thought process (the case of the original chat interaction), the latter is more common than the former. Hey, I am glad to hear your experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and so has mine! 😊 Still, I don't think how much positivity there was excuses mindsets that affect the game or players negatively. Like you said in your fourth point, there are always rude people. That is fine, we can't do anything about it. It is one thing when you encounter a few of these people here and there, but another thing when a core part of the game brings out multiples of these. No subject that is part of a game should bring up a large group of rude people and be left unmentioned and unnoticed. At the end of the day, this was just one drop in a large bucket. It was not the first, and won't be the last.

While I think there's always a place for someone to be devil's advocate, I think the analogy picked was not that great for the situation at hand. This was more akin to someone sitting in the bench and asking for someone to play with, when a stranger sits beside them and starts telling them that before they find someone to play with in the court, they need to learn how to dribble. Keeping it within the topic of games; A better devil's advocate point could have been that there's hundreds of other methods of going about the issue rather than creating a farmer and asking to door sit. That I can definitely agree with. As for the in-game/out-of-game activity thing... I think there is a Help channel in most games for a reason. No one is ever forced to give advice. There will always be those looking for advice, and someone might be willing to give some of their time. This I believe is a big part of the issue/mistake I have committed when it comes to my personal enjoyment. Due to timezone restraints, I can't always get groups for the content I want, and I can't solo what I want either. My go-to solution was trying a method that I did not enjoy: playing the AH. I then switched to farming, which I have found a lot more enjoyable in comparison, but still not quite what I wanted. Finding your enjoyment in something is sometimes a process as well, and I am working towards that process for CoH. From here I will either make more characters to grind to 50 and only play CoH whenever I am able to play close to peak time (which I greatly enjoyed). Or I will attempt to get one of my characters to a spot I can do some content by myself (currently what I am attempting). I might just find out that I can only get enjoyment out of the game during certain times of the day/week. There isn't, and there shouldn't be one. But why is it that some people are willing to stop what they are doing to criticize someone's choices in the game rather than take the time to talk to them? Either ignore the cries for help, or be helpful.

We can start a new topic to discuss that. 😉 Nevermind, that does it. I am leaving CoH never to return, good bye! /s

Well, this kinda blew up... There have been a lot of posts, some very nice stories, and a bit of discussion on the side. Firstly, let me thank you guys who decided to send me inboxes or post here. Don't worry, I am not ripping my hair out because of this chat interaction, and I am not quitting CoH because of it. Your messages were well received. A couple of you mentioned how I basically fed into it, or how I was in the wrong much like the other player. I agree, 100%. I am not proud of it, and I didn't post it here to do that. I also did not post it here to shame this person, hence I censored the chat as much as I could. The thing is, this player was not the first person to say something. It wasn't just a couple either. I could have simply chosen to ignore this player, instead I decided to reply. I attempted to make a point, but like I said earlier, there are no winners in internet arguments. A situation like this can result in a few different outcomes, ranging from a pleasant interaction, all the way to an ignore or a discussion. The outcome depends on how you approach the topic. I would have loved advice if he/she had approached it in a different manner. For example, I would have jumped at the opportunity if that player had offered to walk me through something new in the game. Here's my issue: This player only told me how I was wrong. I was wrong to ask to door sit to level a secondary character after my first one. I was wrong for getting to 50 and not having enough infamy to do what I wanted. I was wrong for not finding groups. (this happened near peak time, try logging in at around 11am-1pm GMT to see how many people are online) and lastly, I was wrong to insist that a farmer was what I wanted to do after my first level 50. Was I wrong in the way I interacted with him/her? Yes, I was. At several points this could have turned into a conversation that was mutually beneficial. However, I was frustrated. This wasn't the first message like this, and I have already been struggling to pick up the game. When we have years and years worth of experience in a game it is hard to remember how it was when we first started: You have no idea how long I went without proper enhancements (either red or entirely missing) because I didn't understand them. You have no idea how much money I spent buying DOs instead of crafting IOs. You have no idea how many times I wound up on the floor because I stood on a -end patch while fighting freakshows. You have no idea how many times I face planted and had to open combat logs only to find out I strolled too close to another Pylon. New players are like little kids: They will make lots of mistakes. If you just reprimand them whenever they pick up a toy, they will drop that toy and go play with something else. My point is, don't approach someone who is new to the game and show them just their mistakes. You are welcome to point out problems, but bring solutions with them. And if someone says that solution has not worked for them, either find out why, or suggest another one. None of this is CoH exclusive, this happens in too many games. However, CoH is a lot more complex than it seems on the surface, and the advice available is either too much, too little, too simple, or too advanced (I haven't figured out which yet).

This point is actually far too accurate. While this specific encounter was a small annoyance for me, I have friends who would have straight up uninstalled the game after something like this. As someone who tries to get my group of friends into literally every single game I play, having something like this happen saddens me a little. Unfortunately I was not able to get many of them to play a game that came out in 2004 which they never had an interest in to begin with 🤣 I always remember that one internet argument vs special olympics meme (just google it if you don't know what I am talking about). It is extremely offensive, but there's such an amazing degree of truth to what it actually wants to get across. Yeah, sometimes it is nice to take a step back and look at what you are saying. It is very easy to become a hypocrite if you just spout things without thinking. We all do it at times.
-
I honestly understand this standing as I have similar opinions when it comes to other games. But like you said, those opinions are for you and me. It is absolutely fine to voice them, as long as you do it the right way. Let us not turn this into a discussion, please. 😉 To each their own, and lets leave it at that. We can't change everyone's minds to think like ours.

Oh, I am fully aware this is far from a good representation of the CoH community (or nearly any game for that matter). I just took the day off, but I will be playing once again today. Like I mentioned earlier, I have already met plenty of people that are the polar opposite of this one player. While I completely agree with you, and I am someone who generally does not care much and gets over things rather quickly; Getting messages like this in the first place will always have some sort of impact. For me it just makes me feel like I rather be spending my time playing another game in which I won't be getting tells of what I should be doing. Which is what I decided to do yesterday. But yes, for those who can follow your advice, that is sound advice. I am sorry to hear. I hope you have found some people that can help you through it. I know I am just a random person on the internet, but if you ever want to type a bunch to a stranger you do not know, my inbox is open. 😊 This is sadly too close to the truth. But maybe, just maybe, someone will see this and realize they have done this to someone else in the past. Whether reportable or not, I have no intention of doing so. I understand his point and yours far too well, as I have similar views in other games I have played in the past. There's just a fine line between friendly suggesting something, voicing your opinion, and pushing your opinion down someone's throat. As you yourself pointed, I think he/she had good intentions. The problem here isn't the intent, it is the approach to it. Hey, I greatly appreciate the offer! My farmer is already in the 40s, so it won't be long before I ding that 50. Still, I won't turn down a chance to talk to some people about games and nostalgia (lots of us seem to have that in common, I wonder why). 😃 Which server do you usually play in? You are right, as I said in the disclaimer it was a rant, and it was essentially about humans being humans. The main thing I am struggling with is doing some of the TFs. I have a Kin/Ice Defender with simple crafted IOs slotted through most of his powers (several of which are still level 25). If I get into the content solo, there are enemies (usually AVs) which I just can't get through. When I get into it with other people, either they blow through everything or... Well, they still blow through everything, but at higher difficulties I spend most of the time licking the floor.

This is getting attention quicker than I expected tbh. I thank you guys for the support, and I am fully aware that this is but one player in hundreds. I just wish people like this would consider the impact they have on others' enjoyment of the game. Regardless, I have met many more people that are the complete opposite of this one example. I have no intent on reporting him. Had I really wanted to avoid talking to him, I could have muted him past the first tell. The simple fact that this is done by not one, but several people, is just rather disheartening. Like I said, nothing I say or do is going to change this. There will always be a few "bad apples." I just hope that maybe this reaches a single bad apple. I think many of us have in one occasion or another in the past. I know I have done so myself, and I have lots of friends who are also the elitist kind of player. It just takes a little bit of consideration to know that you can be elitist amongst your elitist friends, but you should spare others that might not share the same thought. My experience has been rather good to be honest, and this one event has not changed what I think of the game or its community. I just needed to rant about something far too common in games nowadays. I am not entirely sure about the different versions of the game, but the whole AE topic specifically does seem to be a rather polarizing one with most players in Homecoming. I have seen perhaps a couple people actually inviting others to door sit, most of the messages are people looking to door sit rather than the other way around. That said, I talked for hours with some very nice people that allowed me to join their AE farms for a while. In fact, some of the nicest people I met were AE farmers. Most I met seem very content to give up some efficiency in their farming to tell stories about the old days of CoH and what things have changed since then. Surely me being in their team and talking to them isn't helping them make money any faster, but I guess talking to a new player takes away some of the monotony of farming. And in turn, I get to hear great stories of nostalgia and remember my own old days in other MMOs.

Disclaimer: This is a rant, and English is not my mother tongue. I mean no offense to any one person or group of people, so I apologize if it comes across as such. Please take everything within this post with a grain of salt and an open mind. Alright, let me give you a little bit of a background on my CoH experience so far, then you can interpret the uploaded chat log as you wish, and after the fact I will give you my opinion on the "issue" that I wanted to bring up. Several years back (circa 2007-8 if I were to guess) I was hoping between MMOs after a bit of a burnout in the MMO I had been playing since 2004. During that MMO hoping, I found out about CoH. Sadly, back then, it was both a buy to play and a monthly subscription (from what I recall, although premium may have been optional from what I gather nowadays). Sadly, affording a game plus membership in USD was not something I could do back then given my financial situation at the time, so I studied the game, I watched videos, but I never played it. A few months ago, I open twitch and find Strippin is playing CoH. A little surprised I decide to check it out, and thus discover Homecoming. Since then, I have created and played probably over 50 characters, some of which have made it into the 20s and 30s, others who were just fun concepts that I stored and never took into their teens. Roughly two weeks ago, I decided to give time to CoH once again after I took a 3 month break to focus on some IRL things. I logged in only to be reminded of the struggles I had previously (CoH is an incredibly complex game despite seeming very simple), and so I made a forum post. After some great help, I started a new character, and learnt a handful of new things, amongst which were some of my preferences towards certain style of power pools. So I created another character, and decided I would level that character up to 50. Throughout that journey, I met a lot of incredibly helpful friendly people and some who were essentially NPCs (keeping to themselves), but I can't recall anyone who I met throughout my leveling process that wasn't nice to play with. Recently, I hit level 50 on that character, and I started checking out how much all those nice IO sets cost so that I could start putting together a build. I wanted to be able to transition from those radio missions and such into doing some of the TF content, but all the people that I found doing that content are so geared up it is blatantly obvious I am just getting my butt carried. So, I talked a bit to a guy in my supergroup, and he mentioned he had this farmer he used to get infamy. I had read some stuff about it previously, including some of the guides in the forums, but I had not given thought to making one until then. Instead of being carried through content by people with years more experience than me, or taking handouts from people in my supergroup, I decided I would make some money for myself. I started playing the AH. It took me a while to understand some of the systems, and I am still figuring out what things are actually worth infamy and what aren't. Throughout the last couple days I have made a little over 60mil (plus some pending sales) from the 10mil or so I started with. Granted I was learning, I "wasted" some infamy before I even started making profit. And then it struck me... I was logging on to play the AH, spending hours searching for things, listing them back, waiting for them to sell. What I was not doing, was playing the game. I was playing the market within the game, not the game itself. With that epiphany, I decided I would be better off making my own farmer, same as the guys in my supergroup. So I open up some of the guides in the forum again, give them a read, watch some videos, and give it a go. I leveled up my farmer until the mid 30s, and I realized, I was making less money than playing the AH. From what I had read, there's plenty of money to be made with farmers, so what must have been delaying me was my low level (most of the infamy I made was selling rare salvage, and like I mentioned, I made more in the AH). Upon remembering some people were asking to "door sit" their characters, I thought to myself that perhaps I could door sit the farmer and thus speed up the process of getting back to the actual game (as opposed to dropping the farmer and returning to the AH). I went ahead and asked in chat if anyone would be willing to let a newbie door sit. For some reason, the fact that I included that I was a "newbie" in the message triggered some people. This was not the only person who replied to my group requests, but I thought it was a good example of a seemingly rather common reaction. Please see the chatlog now. I feel at an impasse, where I can't do the content I want to do with my character, and some people seem to judge specific methods of creating progress for a character. While I do play the game only to enjoy myself, having someone tell me I am doing it wrong just makes me want to play another game where I won't be told as such, regardless of whether I care about what they think or not. While I have no intentions of leaving CoH yet, the conversation with this player did leave me rather frustrated. So if you want new players to enjoy your game, don't tell them how to do it. Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood newbie. /rantover

Alright, I thought I would give you guys a little update on my ventures thus far. With a little more attention to my enhancements and what I was slotting, I was able to have a lot more success with my Inv/Katana tanker than any others I have had before. I am currently level 29 on him, but won't have much time to play today. During the leveling I let my enhancements go red for a while, which led me to repeatedly dying once again, only reminding me how important having those up is... Currently I'm keeping it simple and going for 2-3 resist/defense DOs and 3 acc DOs on their respective slots. This method has already been eating up a good chunk of the inf I got throughout the leveling process. The "goal" build I got on Mids' was based off of one of the 3.5k+ build database available in the forum. I dropped Build Up and Char (Pyre epic) in favor of Conserve Power and Physical Perfection (Energy epic). I just wanted to have a little bit of a regen feel on the side, specially because leveling with just Dull Pain as a heal has been a little rough thus far. While I have no idea how realistic/optimized any of this is, or how expensive it would be; here's what I had: Hero Plan by Mids' Reborn : Hero Designer 2.6.0.1 https://github.com/ImaginaryDevelopment/imaginary-hero-designer Click this DataLink to open the build! Yesterday I had someone offer to take lead as a Warshade (no idea what they even do) since they had all resists near capped, and I was constantly dropping to Succubi in one of the missions we went into (no resist elements yet, my F/C were somewhere in the teens... 13-15 maybe?). Also, the Inv/Katana combo feels rather bland both on the character animation and skill effect spectrum. I am missing a little bit of punch with my attacks, or at least some AoE... While I have no plans of shelving the character yet, I will probably run something else alongside him to satisfy that craving. Progress will most likely slow down, but perhaps I will come back to it with more experience/inf to invest into it. Thank you very much for all the replies!
