Big change when grouped

I've been farming for a few weeks now, mainly Bloody Rainbow. Pretty easy now that my build is solid. Play at 4/8. So today I invited a friend so I could PL him. I died fast and I typically don't come close to dying.

 

Just wondering what happened. My friend was level 15. I tried a city farm and same thing, I can't last even through one group even using a couple purples. How did adding 1 player to the team do this? Is this normal? I can understand maybe a little higher difficulty but this was significant, almost like I had no fire defense at all. Even double-checked my toggles and everything.

Sometimes when you think you have AE set to spawn bosses it doesn't and you get Lieutenants instead. However this setting of no bosses only works solo. When you add another player the boss spawns come back. So if you are used to fighting Lieutenants and minions the addition of bosses may have overwhelmed you. 

 

I'm not sure if that is what's happening but it sounds like it might be the case.

Thank you, that might be what it is. I never checked what the mobs were, just saw they were purple and giving me lots of xp/inf. I do think I set it to no AVs/bosses at first.
