  1. Here's my Serpent Society inspired Illusion/Poison Controller Hognose!

Edward Evans, was a respected Corporal in the US Marines and had been on numerous deployments around the world over the course of his career.

On a top secret operation to the Amazon rainforest, Edward was bitten in his sleep by a snake. Over the course of the next few days he began to develop strange sensations in his body. Miles away from any real medical help, Edward powered through, not wanting his own health to jeopardise the mission.

Jeopardise the mission he did though, as Edward collapsed on a hike through the thick rainforest. Awaking from his sleep with numerous members of his team surrounding him, they watched in disbelief as areas of his skin turned into thick scales. Poison radiating from his body, he now also had the power to create illusions to stun and confuse his foes. What actually bit Edward is still a topic of debate, but the spirit of the serpent now flows through the body of the man now only known as Hognose.

  2. Here's my characters:

    Hrothgan

    OLFGr0T.png

Once a respected Chief of an ancient barbaric clan, Hrothgan was thought by his people to be the son of gods, due to his superhuman abilities. After proving difficult to defeat on the battlefield due to his superhuman strength and invulnerability, his ship was raided by a rival clan during a sea battle upon icy waters and he was knocked overboard into the freezing depths below. After being frozen under the ice for thousands of years, Hrothgan was pulled to the surface by an arctic research expedition where he was thawed out. Hrothgan escaped the research vessel, mistakenly thinking  he'd been captured by his enemies. He now roams the strange new world of the future, protecting his newly adopted people of Paragon City.

    North East Beast

There had always been something strange about the woods that backed onto Troy Richardson's house, but that night he thought he'd heard it. He opened his back gate to see if he could get a glimpse of what everyone had been talking about. But as the gate creaked open, he caught that glimpse he so craved, as it leapt with menace over his wall, jaws open, ready for a chunk of it's prey's flesh... Troy awoke, with pain searing through his arm he knew he'd been attacked by the rabid beast, as he inspected his injuries, he noticed the gleaming paws he'd once called a hand.  Rumour now spreads the criminal underworld that there's a new crime fighter in town. The North East Beast is alive, and it strikes from the shadows.

    Mechasonic Angel

Henry Tudor-Smith III owns of the largest Tech firms in Paragon City. Having been frustrated with rising crime rates and with crime agencies struggling to keep criminals off the streets, Henry decided to take matters into his own hands and tasked his company with creating an innovative crime fighting tool. Combining the latest flight and sonic technology into a wearable suit, Henry now takes to the streets of Paragon City as Mechasonic Angel.

  3. We have something like this on the Reunion server. We have an all Archery based mission team that run on Wednesday's. I only found out about it as I managed to catch them looking for members on the LFG tab. All have Archery based names too, it's pretty cool. I created an alt so I could join in, was so much fun!

Can we roll up toons at the level cap now?

I’m confused as to how OP has a lvl 50 he doesn’t know how to use.

I don't believe there's a definitive guide anywhere telling you how to play a powerset? Certainly not in game anyway. I don't recall saying I don't know how to use a character either, I said I struggled with the Invul power set a little. Did you have anything meaningful to add to this topic other than deviating from my OP?

Temporary Invulnerability, Unyielding, and Invincibility are your toggles.  Temporary Invuln adds smashing/lethal resistance.  Unyielding is your mez protection.  Invincibility is your taunt aura, and it also gives you scaling defense depending on how many mobs are in range of it.  These toggles and Dull Pain, your trouble button, are the heart of the set.  Before level 22 or so endurance reduction is your only priority in the toggles.

Dull Pain gets six slots seeking to maximize heal and recharge.   These four are your core powers.

The rest should be taken eventually, except for Unstoppable, which is a free pick of something else at 32 or 38.  Tough Hide gets two or three slots of defense.  The other passives are fine with their default slot.  This is a great blessing for your attacks.  They should be taken eventually but they aren't priorities.

Get endurance under control.  Give slots to Health and frankenslot the recovery uniques.

Once endurance is a solved problem, you will eventually want Tough and Weave.  This means wasting a selection on Boxing or Kick first.  At least you don't have to do the Stamina grind any more.

Thanks for the info, that simplifies it a bit for me so I've got a few things I can work on!

On my SD/WM tanker, it wasn't too long before I was soloing Carnival missions on +1/+4, and pulling the first group into the second so there'd be more folks to fight.  Not sure how long but it wasn't level 50, might have been in the 20 to 30 range (I know I had Shield Bash by then though, and two AoEs from Mace, so it might have been a bit post 30).

Check your total bonuses in the Combat Stats window.  Monitor some of those like to-hit and last chance to hit and global accuracy as you fight.  You sound like you've got a bit to much Damage and Resists slotted, and not enough other effects like Recharge, Accuracy, To-Hit Debuff (I think that goes in Unyielding), etc.  Powers have to hit before they do damage, and that's important.

You haven't mentioned Dull Pain and that confuses me.  Dull Pain should be six slotted before anything else is.  Three Health and three Recharge.  You should have global recharge and concentrate on making Dull Pain permanent.  Hasten is your friend.  (Note I didn't say Dull Pain should be slotted to the exclusion of anything else.  My Inv/SS tanker hasn't even taken it yet, but she's low level and is still filling out her attack chain.  Once you get two or three slots in everything, taunt, a travel power, and a (mostly) full attack chain, then take Dull Pain and Hasten.  Then maybe work on Tough and Weave.  It's all in the long term planning.)

What you should be doing: 1. use insp 2. kill stuff.  3. use the insp drops you got from killing stuff.  4. kill stuff 5. go back to 1.

I was specifically talking about the toggles as those are pretty much always on - so thought that might be affecting my endurance a fair bit. I do use Dull Pain, but only ever when my Health's low and I need the heal. I do definitely need to use inspirations more as you say, I'll double check all my powers and enhancements and screenshot them for you.

I've mainly followed this build and just tweaked a few things here and there. https://web.archive.org/web/20120907034145/http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?p=252633#post252633

Inspirations are there to be used - they'll give you that little edge you may need, until you get your footing.

Are you slotting endurance reductions in your defensive toggles and attacks?  Without those, and only just relying on stamina, you'll be sucking wind in no time.  It's also a good idea to get into the habit of *not* firing off those AoE attacks if there's only 1 or 2 enemies.  As an /invuln, you also have a bit of a hole with regard to psychic enemies - so if you;re facing those, that could also explain why you're not fairing so well.  Additionally, without a good amount of defense, you're going to be hit a lot - even if you have high resists, enemy attacks that carry debuffs can really pile up and ruin your day.  Keep at it, or alternatively, give this character some time off, and try something different... maybe you just need a change of perspective for a little bit.

In the two toggles that I use all the time, in Unyielding and Temp Invulnerability, I have 1 Endurance Reduction and 3 Resist in each. Then an endurance reduction in each attack  +3 dmg +1 Acc.

Going out on a limb here a bit but if you're having trouble with survivability on a Brute I think your only hope is a Tanker.  People are suggesting Willpower, I'd recommend WP/Mace as pretty decent damage and ok to play.  (Though I like Shield Defense/Mace, that might be a bit like Invulnerability in its uses and slotting.)

Also no set or AT makes you invulnerable.  It's always possible to bite off more than you can chew.  Learn the mobs, learn your own capability, learn to count (and use) the Insp in your tray before doing something stupid, and also learn your teammates, their powers, and how those interact with your abilities.

I think it's more the fact I dont really know how to play the Invul power set. I'm not really sure what powers to use when. I always have Unyielding and Temp Invulnerability toggled on, then after that I'm unsure on what to do.

So, there are a few factors here that aren't known, and need clarification before we can properly address your predicament:

    1. What difficulty and team size is your notoriety set to?  If you're having trouble soloing on like +4/x8, then that's not too concerning.  If you, however, are having problems with -1/x1, then we'll need to dig into your build and playstyle.

    2. How are you slotted?  Do you have, for instance, yellow and red SOs?  Are your defensive toggles slotted with 3 DEF or RES enhancements and 1 endurance reduction?  How about stamina?  Do you have it 3-slotted with endurance modification enh's?

    3. Are you actively using your inspirations?  Even a little purple luck can save your butt, and a few blue "catch a breath" insp's can make or break a fight.

That being said, I'm going to go against the trend here a bit, but please hear me out:  Try this combo - claws/bio armor.  I know it sounds weird, but I've found it quite effective.  For claws, your key powers will be follow up and eventually focus/shockwave.  Follow up grants you a nice tohit and damage buff, which can be made to be permanent with minimal effort.  For bio armor, you'll want your basic toggles, (Hardened CarapaceEnvironmental Modification, and Evolving Armor), plus Inexhaustible and Adaptation.  Now, the key thing with bio armor is that inexhaustible will keep your endurance full and health topped off.  while adaptation will give you 3 mutually exclusive toggles.  These toggles, (in simple terms), boost your damage, increase your survivability, or help with end issues.  Claws, besides the nice self-buff and some ranged attacks, is also fast-recharging and light on end use itself.  All I can say is to give this combo a try!

    1. I usually play with team size 1 then +1 notoriety when I'm soloing. I've re-done a few of my enhancements and I'm starting to get better survivability now, although as I've stated above, I'm not too sure on how to play the Invul power set which is a big part of the problem.

    2.  I've tried to follow this build https://web.archive.org/web/20120907034145/http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?p=252633#post252633 - most of my defensive powers are slotted with Level 50 Resistance SO's. I'll provide a screenshot later tonight with all my enhancements as I did deviate a little from the build.

    3. No I've not really been using inspirations, wasn't sure whether it was a good thing to be relying on inspirations.

My Inv/SS Tanker has virtually no end problems, and all it took was two 50+5 End Mods and a Perf Shifter Proc in Stamina, Miracle, Numina, and Panacea uniques in Health, Physical Perfection with a Perf Shifter proc, and expensive IOs in all my attacks and toggles for 40-60% end reduction. Nothing major! 😁

What did you choose for your Alpha?

  10. Currently rolling a Level 50 SS/Inv Brute, have quite a bit of difficulty with survivability and endurance during solo play - probably mostly to do with the fact I find it quite difficult to play and find it fairly unforgiving. Does anyone know of an archetype and powerset that's fairly simple to play?

  11. Don't know if this would even be possible, but some sort of group finder. Would be nice to just be able to find a group at the click of a button rather than having to rely on the LFG chat. It can be quite difficult at the moment to find a group when not playing on peak hours.

  12. Hello. I am just starting CoH again after playing it a long time ago. I have a few questions if you have time.

I'm looking for a build that has a good mixture of single target attacks, multi target attacks, and survivability. While the Spines/Fire thing seems very appealing from an AOE farming perspective, I would rather build a more well-rounded character. So my questions are:

What is a primary that has a nice balance between single target damage and multi target damage?

Why do I never see any builds that use Regeneration?

Are other secondaries better for survivability?

I like the idea of Regeneration because the concept reminds me of a classic Paladin and its ridiculous survivability. I was thinking if it was combined with a good primary, it could actually have decent damage, unlike a classic Paladin. Am I way off base on this?

Any advice is most welcome and thank you for reading.

I'm having some issues as a SS brute with Regen. I'm only Level 11 at the moment, does it get better over time as you unlock new powers? I currently only have Fast Healing and Reconstruction unlocked.

  13. Is anyone using Regen as their secondary power? I'm massively struggling with survivability  at the moment. I'm only Level 11, and only using Fast Healing and Reconstruction as that's the only things I have unlocked so far. Is it just a case of the powerset gets better as you unlock new powers? Is it a viable secondary powerset?

It does get better later on, but it'd also be useful to know your primary. Regen shines better on a primary that has some level of mitigation (the +def from Parry/Divine avalanche for example, things like Dark and the -tohit, etc) to reduce the number of hits coming in to give your regen chance to work. Also, Dull Pain is your friend as it helps with Alphas.

As noted by Jack, you're probably better asking on the specific AT forum as it does vary depending on which one you use.

Primary is Super Strength and I'm a Brute. I'll ask the AT forum - thanks for the advice!

  14. Is anyone using Regen as their secondary power? I'm massively struggling with survivability  at the moment. I'm only Level 11, and only using Fast Healing and Reconstruction as that's the only things I have unlocked so far. Is it just a case of the powerset gets better as you unlock new powers?
