  1. This is a hard sell, but... wait for it... Controller. The early levels can be rough, but once you hit your stride, you'll be well nigh invincible. As a bonus, your secondary powers will be a support set.
  2. Avoid DFB. That, and AE before it, are vehicles by which veteran players can level up and bypass the 1-20 grind. Experiment with different ATs and power combinations. You'll learn so much more about how the game works than if you pick some "1337" build (do the kids still say "1337"?). Once you're relatively comfortable with the game, try teaming up. You'll learn even more about synergy and how to turn impossible situations into victories. Experiment with character concepts. Got an idea for a ghostly character who was created from the combined psychic despair of the people killed in the Hollowing? Or maybe Gilgamesh's kid brother actually won the secret of immortality but is kind of sorry that he did? The game's "lore" is flexible enough to accommodate almost any idea.
  3. That's an impressive list! The only games I recognize are Call of Cthulhu, GURPS, and Mutant City Blues. I played Cthulhu back in the 90s, but all I remember is being slightly drunk and being the first of the party to go insane. I also ran a GURPS campaign for 2-3 years in college, based on the "Manmarch" choose-your-own-adventure-books. I bought GURPS 4e out of nostalgia recently and was almost immediately disappointed. Their "fix" to the attribute system felt like they took a sledgehammer to a problem that required a scalpel. On the plus side, they at least tried to make "flexible" armor a bit more realistic. Some favorite TTRPGs of mine: James Bond 007 (Victory Games) - the first game to introduce me to a purely point-buy character generation system Star Trek Roleplaying Game (FASA) Paranoia (West End Games) The Burning Wheel (Luke Crane) - almost unplayable as written, but with a muck ton of interesting ideas.
