  1. I've come up with an initial build, but it sucks down endurance and I need more slots. But Psi/Fire does look promising. Once I get something more useable in Pine's I'll start a thread.

Just tested Tenebrous Tentacles on my Rad/Fire Scrapper -

It missed 6 out of the 8 mobs, but for some reason, none of them ran out of my Burn. UMMMMMMMMMM

  2. Now if there was a way to have Scrappers Burn not makes mobs run away....from what I'm looking at, Psi/Fire would be more damage than SS/Fire.

That sounds delicious and amazing and something I want. Now, how can we make that happen or at least close to happening?

Trust me, I would do some...unpleasant things for someone to magically inform me of a way to make Burn not suck on a scrapper.

What do you think of using Tenebrous Tentacles from Darkness Mastery to help keep them in place for Burn?

Yea I considered that as an option. I'm not sure how reliable it will be,may need to test it.

  3. Now if there was a way to have Scrappers Burn not makes mobs run away....from what I'm looking at, Psi/Fire would be more damage than SS/Fire.

  4. I have a level 50+ DM/Shield scrapper, thanks to Murcielago's suggestion  :).  I love this combination. However, I would not recommend it for farming.

I do a bit of farming with my DM/Shield, but only because it is my only level 50. With Shield Charge and Fireball you have enough AoE to clear mobs, but it is far from optimal. I would not build a DM/Shield -- or any DM/ toon really -- with the intention of farming. Other sets do it better. Fire or Bio would clear mobs faster.  Maybe even Katana too.

If you want to stick with DM/Sheild, I second Murcielago's suggestion for Spring Attack. I used it before I got Shield Charge.  It is a nice attack, but on a very long timer. I would frankenslot it to get as much recharge as possible.

Agreed DM is pretty lame sauce when it comes to farming.

Can confirm - I originally recreated my DM/Shield from live and dropped PLENTY of inf and time into him only to find that after you nuke a pack with Soul Drained Shield Charge and then Judgement, you slow WAY down. And then feel somewhat clunky when trying to align all cooldowns to do it again. Which was super disappointing given how awesome your burst is. I love the character, but farming isn't in his vocab anymore.

  5. Pines says on both Tankers and Brutes that Mass Levitate is higher damage than Foot Stomp, so yeah I think that'd be a worthy farming AoE

But does that factor in Rage or double stacked Rage?

Pines shows Mass Levitate at roughly the same damage with a single stack of Rage with both sets on a Brute. When switching Psi Melee to scrapper the mass levitate damage jumps to almost 100 more average damage than footstomp with a single stack of rage.

The benefit of SS/Fire vs Psi/Fire is going to be the easier mobbing of Brute due to taunt. So, while the scrapper alternative Psi may be higher damage, the added benefit of clumped mobs to Burn as a Brute may prove to be a more consistent damage producer even with the crash. Now if there was a way to have Scrappers Burn not makes mobs run away....from what I'm looking at, Psi/Fire would be more damage than SS/Fire.

  6. What would you think would pair best with dark secondary as a scrapper? Im highly interested in leveling a hero in it to get a feel for its end game

I probably wouldn't make any dmg aura scrappers, when i could make them as brutes instead. That said Staff, Kat & BS will add stack-able melee defense to your considerable Resistences, & staff has a low endurance mode that should help to alleviate any of the endurance issues associated with Dark.

Just to be clear - there is no primary to alleviate the endurance issues associated with dark armor. Staff included. Theft of Essence is the literal only sure fire way to properly mitigate the heavy endurance consumption.

  7. Respectfully, the true "all-around damage king" at this time is Titan Weapon/Bio Armor for scrapper. IMO, I think it's more fun (and still very effective) to play the characters Murcielago recommended, but both numerically and in performance, TW is in a league of its own (especially with bio armor, arguably one of the best offensive sets for scrapper).

I would NOT recommend TW/Bio for a newcomer to melee, or a new player in general. It's not a leveling-friendly, and/or new player-friendly, set (especially combined). But it is undeniably powerful at high end.

That sounds about right, heck, I played coh back when it first came out and even I just floundered trying to play titan weapons. It's so damn slowwwww, and you really feel that as you're leveling up, especially if you miss. As for bio armor, it must be one of those sets that shines only at end game, I tried various archetypes with the set and couldn't stand them, only managing to get them into their upper 20s.

TW only shines with set IOs, event at 50 TW sucks without significant end recovery.

TW is solid in specific scenarios and with Bio. In practice it's clunky, awkward and generally annoying. I'm not convinced that it's "in a league of it's own". With some personal testing - I came to the conclusion that it was high(er) in damage than most, but not far and away the best. I'll take slightly less damage for sets that don't feel like im actually not super at all, and can't swing the weapon I have chosen as my way to be super.

  8. A bit late but I'll throw some sets in

I use an Elec Melee/Bio scrapper as my main farmer, can destroy freakshow/council all day long, it took until deep into incarnates for him to get really good single target though, he is a monster now that though

Fiery Melee/Shield Brute, he is my AE farmer on S/L maps, can rum them all day, i've gone afk and left him in the middle of mobs and he is fine, despite only having 75% res

War Mace/Shield scrapper, not done a lot with him so far, but he has the potential, war mace gets some great AOE and shield is just strong for a farming build due to easily capped def, a strong AOE and decent resistance potential

Yerp, I'm pretty sure my issue with Elec Melee is the ST. Kinda sucks to have to wait until so far into Incarnates to feel adequate ST. Meh

I also saw a Psi/Rad scrapper hitting a farm the other day - actually wasn't terrible. I imagine if you did like Psi/Shield or Psi/Fire you could get rolling. Psi's T9 actually does more damage than Foot Stomp and Greater Psi Blade hits like a large SUV.

An old favorite of mine was DB/Fire - bit squish, but for fire farming it did well.

  9. Rad/Dark. Not easy to build nor easy on the end bar but is a lot of fun and keeps you on your toes.

I just finished building my Rad/Shield - but prior to making a decision, I was heavily considering doing either Rad/Dark or Lightning/Dark. I think I am unreasonably partial to Dark Armor. It's not even better and it rarely fits my themes. Why am I like this

  10. I am attempting to increase SL's healing ability and keep my soft cap defenses. I want more ranged defense but need to work on that.

I believe one of your more reasonable options to get back to soft cap with your current SL healing increase would be to drop the Preventative Medicine chance to absorb, drop One with the Shield or Grant Cover, and pick up Super Jump for another Blessing of the Zephyr 2 slot bonus. At a glance this is the move I would make. I'll keep poking around and see if I get a feel for a less invasive alternative.

  11. It helps to talk about what kind of farming you mean when you say X is a great farmer.

My electric/shield scrapper can run the Council Earth farm all day at +4/8.  But that kind of farm is perfectly suited for a burst damage set like elec/shield... I jump into a group, double nuke it, clean up the bosses, and I'm on to the next group.  I can do that all day.  ^_^

That's very different from the type of farming you want to do on a fire brute, where you want to be constantly over aggro cap for stretches of several minutes at a time.  That kind of constant incoming damage does not suit a shield scrapper well -- IE an AE smashing/lethal farm, even if you're capped at 75% resistance and softcapped at 45% plus defense, you may still find that +4/8 with bosses is too much incoming damage to deal with.

I find  with a fire brute that 90% resistance and about 30% defense is the sweet spot for surviving long term.  More defense is better, but if you're at about 15% fire defense you can make up the difference by constantly converting inspirations to purples and eating them like candy.  I haven't tried that kind of farm on a fire scrapper, but I would imagine it's similar to a shield scrapper in an S/L AE farm -- even at 45% defense and 75% resistance you may want to run at only +3, or run without bosses at +4.

And yes, Bio can run farms quite well.  ^_^

    VERY good point -

I mean at this point, the type of farming doesn't matter as much to me. I prefer interesting builds and less used combinations more than the meta - even if that means I lose X amount of Inf an hour. Fun is more important to me.

Interestingly enough, I have been running my DM/SD Scrapper who is softcapped to Melee, AoE, and Ranged with modest resists - and I am finding Fire farms to be easier than S/L *shrug*

Unless convinced otherwise, I have been messing around in pines on a Rad/SD Scrapper - Does anyone have any experience with the taunt from AAO being enough to keep mobs in Irradiated Ground?

  12. So I think I have narrowed my search down a bit thanks to you fine folks

Rad/SD is now at the top of my list - I think the consistent AoE Damage from Rad will outperform the mini nukes of Soul Drained Shield Charges (I think!??!!)

Why do I feel like a Staff/Fire would be kickass?

I've been taking my time on a SS/Bio Brute who is sitting at lvl 41 and I must say - it is certainly increasing my level of respect for SS. Rage is annoying now that you can't avoid it, but even at level 41 and little investment, I have enough recharge for perma. SS feels (dated) but smooth and I can see a world where I make it my main farmer. Which puts me back to using Fire Armor or Dark? I saw a SS/Dark running around earlier who kicked ass.

Is there a world where we make Psionic Melee work? Or does the cone + mass levitate not do enough? Even when possibly paired with SD?

You guys kick ass, and I love coming here to discuss thoughts and ideas. Thank you <3

  13. Fm/SD

It has solid single target damage, Fire Sword Circle is a great AoE, you'd have shield charge, and could even pick up another AoE in your epic/patron pool if you choose, and of course, there's also your Judgement Incarnate. I can solo AV's and farm with my FM brute.

And think about it, how many other scraps or brutes have you seen running around with FM?

    Definitely not FotM.

I have a lvl 6 FM/SD just in case I ever decided to act on my thoughts of making it better than the more common Elec/SD.

Part of my dilemma is that in general - I just see so much Fire anything. While the logical side of my brain tells me, "duh", the more creative side is telling me to use something as bad as Ice Melee and make it badass.

Thank you for the response - I always consider that combo just because I know it will wreck.

  14. And a slew of single digit level scrappers. I literally haven't even created another AT outside of my scrappers and the lone SS Brute. (Are Widows decent? Basically Claws with some control?)

Night Widows are Claws/SR scrappers except with -regen, ranged attacks, and also they're really FF defenders because the whole team is softcapped now.  "Decent" is underselling it to the point of absurdity.  And yeah, your rad/fire should be just fine.

For anything else... you end up having to take a set with capped Fire Resist and a chunk of Ranged/Fire Defense (or vice-versa), or "a bit" of fire mitigation and enough damage to just gottagofast it.  Which is... not too hard, really?  For melee, Fire gets there fastest, but /Invuln can do it well enough, Shield and SR obviously just... dodge... and Dark Armor, Willpower, and Stone Armor (on a Brute) can get there without any special trickery. Going further afield, Masterminds and Dominators have a fair bit to recommend them and you can always learn to appreciate your melee even more by trying out a Blaster, Sentinel, or Corr (they're gonna be an uncomfortable ride for quite a while, but can work just fine at max level).  The MFing Warshade build might also work on a similar principle.  Post-Lightform PBs are fine, but before that you might feel pretty squishy (Crab tops out at 60% fire resist before IOs, and non-IO'd PB crabs are a little more awkward to use than WS ones).

My suggestion?  Water/Fire Sentinel.  Great AoE availability, solid general damage, caps Fire resist (at 75%) with a couple of IOs and gets you out of your comfort zone.

See, this is kind of where I'm missing something - my Rad/Fire has capped Fire resist and a few million in IOs as a baseline, and farming just doesn't really work. I die while spamming healing flames. I know with more investment and bonuses that Rad/Fire works. I've seen it work. So the idea that any number of these alternatives, with capped fire resist, will perform better just doesn't do it for me. Admittedly, out of the several thousand of hours in CoH over the years - I probably have a collective 5-10 in Fire as a armor set. So I may just be overthinking it.

I have been eyeing the MFing WS. Mainly because a close friend of mine back on live mained one. And I could not believe the potential of that build.

The Sentinel recommendation is interesting - I was already eyeing the AT since I left CoH prior to it's release and making a DP/Nin kind of scratches a concept itch I have had since 2006. If you are familiar enough with the AT, are there any major differences to the secondaries that I should be aware of? Everyone I have talked to about it seem to come from Blasters and have little experience in the armor department.

Thank you for your input - very very helpful

  15. Rad/Fire is a fine farm build. I've got one of those and a spines/fire. Spines might be faster overall, but rad isn't bad.

I'm probably just unreasonably picky - but Rad feels....off. I know that it's numerically effective, but something isn't clicking with me.

That being said, if I can't find something else in the same neighborhood of performance, I may just have to suck it up.

  16. Hey all,

So I'm about done with sets on my DM/SD, and while he absolutely NUKES - The ST focus of DM is incredibly apparent and feels kinda clunky roughly every other pack when I'm not lucky with crits. So I will be sliding him into my "all content" character slot and now need a true farming build. But I have a very real issue that makes this slightly more difficult -

I loath FoTM or common builds. So Spine/Fire? Nope. And that's before the fact that Spines looks ABSOLUTELY silly visually.

What are some less common farm builds that I can build towards?

Current characters that I have below 50 -

SM/Dark - 45 (I am tempted to say F*ck it and dump some inf into this one just to see if Savage is like most things in life - Money cures it)

    Rad/Fire - 44

    SS/Bio - 41

    StJ/Bio - 27

And a slew of single digit level scrappers. I literally haven't even created another AT outside of my scrappers and the lone SS Brute. (Are Widows decent? Basically Claws with some control?)

Any and all info and suggestions would be greatly appreciated <3

  17. Hey all,

I threw this build together for a bud. Looking for some feedback and help to make it the best little elec/fire brute it can be  :)

  18. I was extolling the merits of Radiation Armor yesterday in another thread and got to thinking about the pre-shutdown DM/Elec Brute I'm currently remaking and wondering Rad might be a better pairing with DM than Elec.

It's been a long time, but I think what drew me to Electric Armor was it had psionic resistance and a Recharge bonus via Lightning Reflexes. Radiation Armor has less Psionic resistance but also an equal amount of Toxic resistance too. It provides variable Recharge bonus, but caps out at a higher amount when you are where a Brute likes to be--in the middle of a crowd of enemies. Like Electric Armor, Radiation Armor has a heal, but it also has an damage absorption power, so you could slot Siphon Life more for damage and recharge. Both have a damage aura, but whereas Electric train's endurance, Radiation's lowers their regeneration while upping yours. Instead of having an foe endurance drain/self endurance rcovery power (which overlaps Dark Consumption) Radiation gets a passive which like Stamina ups endurance recovery. Moreover Radiation gets a toggle which lowers enemy defenses and to-hit (which works in conjunction with the accuracy debuff from DM melee attacks).

Attacking faster, hitting more often, getting hit less, having damage absorption...it really looks like Rad pairs better with DM than Elec (which from experience is a really good pairing). Am I missing something?

I think what you will find is that /Rad is just good. So when compared to a mediocre set like /Elec - the amount of positives are going to outweigh the negatives. I have read quite a few posts that /Rad and /Bio are kind of overtuned right now. I really dont think it's even a discussion at this point - Regardless of primary, /Rad will likely outperform /Elec at virtually every portion of the game.

  19. Wow Thank you for all the info.

Would /SD be something I should wait on to level until I can afford to max it out? I have around 14mil I know that is not much anymore. Are we talking 100s of millions to get SD good? if that is the case I will do fire/bio or something that might be easier? or SR like you mentioned. I was burning through levels im starting to have a hard time with sm/sd at 25 still using DO's.

I will try fire soon and also maybe try staff I don't know why but the set just seems like it has so many tools. The info on character screen shows at 50 the extreme staff attack is at 320ish seems insane!

Shield Defense feels good even while leveling and with minimal investment. This is obviously relevant to the content you want to do - but generally I find it one of the more enjoyable sets due to shield charge and aao - they are just additive bonuses to every primary, icing if you will. With minimal investment and some planning - you can actually slot it up to a respectable level and enjoy the set. The reason my set bonus seeking illness goes nuts with shield defense is the diversity in options due to the set having a bit of everything. Which is exactly why for general content - it's great.

  20. New build, going to give confront and moonbeam a shot. I'm interested in the snipe changes. I also lowered the cost of the build by at least 40m INF by getting rid of some HOs as they're 20-25m INF a pop.

Forgive my ignorance - but what are the sniper changes? And how do they benefit Scrappers outside of access to a different group of set bonuses?

  21.

And just when I thought I favored more recharge - This build is a beast and may just push me to back off my perma SD kick. Do you feel starved for attacks at all? Or does Smite // SL // MG feel decent enough?

That is the ideal attack chain. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure it goes Smite > SL > Smite > MG, or some variation on that.

Yea, my brain has been a bit slow this morning while I multi-task work and forum browsing - you are correct and taking some old posts from live into account, you do in fact only take Smite/SL/MG.

  22. anyone know how a Psi/regen scrap would fair in the PvP world? and if anyone has any builds they can share so i can get an idea of i should be slotting that would be great.

It is my understanding that Psi Melee is bugged in PvP? I could be wrong, but I was reading how it's quite possible for the set to be utilizing PvE numbers in PvP. If anyone has any hard facts, feel free to chime in here. My knowledge of the set is limited and I have done some moderate building in Pine's, but mainly for PvE.

  23. Have you tried Moonbeam and running Soul Drain+Tactics+Kismet 6%? That would add up to enough +tohit to turn MB into an instant-snipe. I think it would have the highest dps out of DM's attacks, though I don't think ancillary/epic attacks get a Scrapper's boosted chance to crit.

Nope but that does sound interesting!

New build, got rid of shadow maul and 5 slotted dark blast to get another purple set in.

And just when I thought I favored more recharge - This build is a beast and may just push me to back off my perma SD kick. Do you feel starved for attacks at all? Or does Smite // SL // MG feel decent enough?

  24. I haven't figured out a way to get to perma SD yet but I'm sure it's possible. Your build looks like it's not at the soft cap for ranged or aoe def so you might want to plug those holes before shooting for perma SD. This is the build I'm currently working toward.

Mate, you were the one that inspired me to go for DM/SD on live way back when - I have been keeping an eye on your build thread, trust me <3 It was actually a template I used to make mine.

As for the defense holes - I'm still trying to work out what the sweet spot would be. But I have since found the empowerment buff and can now work my way down adding a bit more defense. So cheers jack_nomind for the heads up on that buff
