Places to Plug In for RP

Recommended Posts

1) Intro:

Hi all!

I've been playing on Everlasting for a few weeks and it's been incredible seeing people make use of all the little emotive features of CoH in ways I felt completely on my own enjoying before. I cannot possibly overstate the sheer joy of seeing even a single other human using Walk to move around immersively.

2) The Chase (Cut to It):

I'm looking for some intermediate advice on linking up for people with stories. I have extensive background doing rp, primarily in tabletop and forum styles, so getting used to really crunching down my writing to fit CoH and keep momentum has been a fun new challenge.

I've spent time lurking in Pocket D, reading profiles, chatting people up in Tells if something in their profiles spark my imagination. I'm curious if anyone could recommend some good additional steps for putting my ideas out there for collaboration. My first instinct is to create a Topic here in the forums advertising the character I'm focusing on, but I don't see much traction in those kinds of threads.

To be clear, this is not a frustration thread, I'm no stranger to patiently fishing. Just making sure I'm casting my line into all the ponds available! Looking to learn and get myself plugged into wherever I can!

3) Focus Areas:

Some areas I could use help on:

  • Any Super Groups I should Coalition my personal base to for networking making stories?
  • Notable Discords or Reddit groups that gets good chatter and are welcoming to new faces?
  • Is it worth the effort to make some AE maps to use for scenes? Anyone aware of some existing creations or tags to search on for rp-focused backdrop AEs?
  • For full on story conflict, do people generally move to a PVP zone or something? I'm not much of a min-maxer so that could brutalize my creative license if so hah!
  • What are some good entry level hooks people like for playing villains? I say entry level because while I'd love the chance to full on kidnap a mind control victim one day, that's a steep ask for a first scene. Some ideas I can pitch for people to have a low-risk brush with a new enemy would help a lot!
  • I see lots of clubs operating through Superbase codes, any useful hubs where people like to gather? Or codes for places that are useful for scenery people here know of?

4) Basic Character Details:

This is more of a "How Do CoH RP Gooder" thread, but in case it's relevant to anyone's advice, here's my current character's bio:

Spoiler

Name: Yastenna

Origin: Natural

Archetype: Widow

Alignment: Villain (80%), Rogue (20%)

Pronouns: She/Her

Height: 6'5"

Every candidate of the Widow program must undergo invasive psychological conditioning to prepare them for a life of spycraft among metahumans. Compartmentalization, telepathic countermeasures, empathic infiltration; the tools of a secret war. One of the more invasive techniques is persona grafting: directly shaping the identity of the candidate to optimize their affect and aptitude for the job at hand. Yastenna is a specialist in this field of strategic brainwashing, working to implant authentic personalities into Widows preparing for deep cover. A trail of half-crazed test subjects strewn in her wake speaks to her dedication to refining the art.

Hooks:

* Have a coded conversation in public as a client/spy

* Petition for Widow candidate training

* Opt for her to flag you as a "research subject"

  • Depending on what your play style preference is, there's lots of different super groups to coalition with. Many of the club super groups in particular have a thriving RP community in member base, and so many of them have chained their stories to work with pretty much any player that visits or becomes a "regular patron" to their spaces. There are lots of public bases available for settings and personal spaces as well. Most notable public spaces are actually on the Everlasting Base List popmenu, some change their base codes when they are closed (specifically some of the club bases) but there's a large number of them that are largely public for use.
  • At the moment the most popular Discord group for roleplay connections and concept discussions for Homecoming is City of Roleplay, I am one of the administration staff members and I also run the Welcome Wagon's project monthly for teaching newer roleplayers and old, about the features of the game as well as brushing up on basics for those that are not super familiar with roleplaying in collaborative spaces like MMO's provide.
  • YES, new AE arcs to play are ALWAYS a good thing for exploring character backgrounds, encounters, and more. At the moment none that I can think of off hand (I'm a bit irregular with AE arcs to be honest, but I do recall a number of creative players creating arcs to explore the backgrounds of their characters and the many groups blue, red and gold side to be introduced to, lots of player canon gets involved in many of the current dev choices on the AE list, so be sure to check them out!)
  • To my experience, PVP here is a bit wonky, there's some build choices that are a lot stronger than others and it's something that the devs of HC are working towards creating a balance for all AT's. There are some people that use PVP zones for immersive story telling as well as action scenes (Ahem, I jumped into a few simply because it fits for my characters story as well. Quite fun!)
  • Entry level depends entirely on you and the players you interact with honestly, some might be open to the idea of a "kidknapping" scene, but some might not be okay with it. Always talk to the players OOC wise first to make sure they are open to the concept, it's one of the basics I try to encourage and teach with the newer players here, informed consent roughly.
  • Many of the travel hub bases are great for meeting people in, or just for functional use, one of the newer ones, Metro Plaza GO-28888 is one I'd recommend for roleplayers new and old to use simply because it's beautifully made and has an atheistic that the tram locations of the game actually lacks. Another I can recommend exploring for RP opportunities is Karma-508. You can also find many many more that might be good settings for play here on the HCwiki. HC Wiki Everlasting Base List

Thanks for the reply @Crystal Dragon, that base list will help me a lot especially.

Another question occurs, I've joined the RP and OOC channels inworld but they appear to be more or less abandoned. Are there other chat channels in use in present day for seeking out across the game for people who want to collaborate? It would make things easier being able to just work on solo content but have feelers going somewhere in game.

At the moment there is no active global channel promoted, but this may change in the near future. For the most part folks organize outside of game in the discord groups for HC and CoRP both for events, as well as SG group discords. I do know that there's lots and lots of RP team and mission runs announced in LFG on Everlasting that anyone can join.

Thoughts from someone who dove into this fully, almost two years ago.
Played CoH from the start (live) and played a lot of Homecoming, but was a casual RPer. Then finally went in deep.

Crystal Dragon's list is great.

I'll add:

Look for RP mission groups. Sometimes just a little chat between and in missions will get you a connection.

TAXI-4000 is my fav transit base.

Pocket D is good, but sometimes hard to make longer term connections.

Clubs are good but can get very loud (lots of conversations overlapping). Consider changing your "/listenrange" to something below 50.

Bartenders at clubs can be a good source of information. Dance floor is often a "group dance" ("The dance shape" as it is sometimes called).

Have your ID/description filled out, including the fact that you are interested in RP. Some hooks in your backstory can sometimes lead to discussion points.

As I was told many years ago on the Live RP forums:
Don't be too pushy.

Start casual. Day-to-day type stuff that might go on in your character's life. Work school..."my super-suit still smells like the sewers".

Bring a story - you may have to drive conversation or prompt questions about yourself.

Most of all, good luck, have fun. Welcome to our crazy corner of the internet.

  • Thanks 1

RP on Everlast:

Primary: Tenaxa (Victoria (Tori) Hanes-Sykes); at least 5 versions and counting

And pretty much any other character I play.
