I don't have any input on AT or powersets... but I just want to say that I think it's very cool that you are taking your epic choice seriously and making it fit with the character thematically. Sometimes I wonder if I'm alone with all my little just-for-me choices, which I guess you could call headcannon.

My beam rifle/willpower sentinel is a regular guy, and also somewhat bitter and prejudiced toward super powered heroes... when he took dark mastery and void judgment, it was a big deal. I don't RP, but I play my characters "lore accurate" so he only uses these powers when he's alone or a team is in serious trouble. It's a mark of shame for him... which makes the game more interesting for me.

Thanks for your post. I always assume other people just pick whatever looks cool or hits hard... so it feels good to know other people approach the game this way.

Hey thanks, glad to meet someone with a similar approach! Your character sounds super cool!

It sounds to me (without having read every single post/reply in this thread) that OP is looking for Soul Mastery to be their "primary" power - the thing that sets them apart from the plebs.

That would then indicate that primary and secondary need to be powers that anyone with enough time, energy and practice can excel at... so martial arts, guns, etc

What I think we're looking at here is powers that fit a tech or natural origin, rather than something more mystical. So maybe a primary of a bow and arrow or gun and a melee based secondary and then SM to come in at a later stage to add value to the whole concept.

I'd have to look at Mids for the possible combos and I don't have access to it as I write but if I've understood the OP that's the kind of direction they want to go. A Sentinel might work, but if they want real resilience something like a War Mace/Super Reflexes brute would possibly work - somebody with natural origin who just trained to peak performance and then the soul powers come out later. That would give pretty good solo capability and change.

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

Hey, thanks for this. You're close - I don't mind having an initial "super" power, but I definitely want SM to be a progression that feels substantial, if that makes sense. I think it gives a lot of weight when switching over to the villain side for the story arcs (either temporarily or permanently) and gaining something unique and "forbidden" out of it. My current plan is to make a Shield/Ice Melee Tanker, as I would be able to (I think) use 3 SM powers to really flesh out the damage later on. Seems like Tankers really benefit from SM, based on all the things I've seen.

I'm inexpert on Tanks but SM seems to offer some good options.

One of my favourite superheroes is Daredevil because his powers are relatively low key but he's trained himself to become something of a Ninja. He is effectively his most powerful self.

Regarding your tanker: Would Street Justice not be a better fit conceptually instead of ice melee?

I meant Street Justice definitely COULD fit, but I don't know if it would work better for my personal idea.  I'm not a big fan of playing characters with zero/minimal powers to begin with. it's just kind of boring to me and I have a hard time justifying how a guy with a shield and some fighting skills can beat opponents with all kinds of crazy powers (there's a reason Daredevil's enemies are usually more grounded than, say, the X-Men's rogues gallery). So I think Ice kinda fits the middle ground for what I want, a power that lets me be relevant story-wise against the early and mid game enemies, but gives room for Soul to upgrade my character. Plus, Ice doesn't "fall off" conceptually against endgame content, if that makes sense.
