Mainly out of curiosity, what ping do you get to the server? I know as someone who lives on the US west coast I get 180 ping (which is worse than my friends on Excelsior playing from England) and that already annoys the hell out of me, so I can't imagine how bad it must be for you.

At the absolute best, 290. This is rare.

At worst, 400+ Anything above ~350 basically freezes the game.

A VPN is virtually (no pun intended) mandatory if you're in China and want to be connected to the outside world without China censoring what you see. So, there's a good chance that the OP is already using a VPN.

Yes that's correct, I'm using a VPN and rely on it every day. Nearly all of the world's most popular websites are blocked by the Great Firewall.

I'm terms of using a VPN to better access CoH, I've tried lots of different server connections and they don't make a difference. The distance is just too great.

You mention latency and struggles with lag. A change in the location of the server would do what exactly? Why would anything change? I would imagine a "new" server would be the same size, speed, etc. Maybe even the same physical server, I've no idea.

My thinking regarding internet & computers has always been there's a bottleneck somewhere. Could be your hard drive, could be your memory, the size of your page file (if you use that to pretend you have more memory than you do). Could be you've got ISP service from a cable provider who love to put a throttle on your uploading packets. Maybe even a throttle on your downloading packets too.  Could be your ISP is burdened with other traffic that slows things down on your end. Or, it could be the server. I just find it unlikely because others play with no lag on the highest graphic settings. Some folks play with multiple instances on the highest graphic settings with no lag or latency.

Obviously, some folks have a better system than others - but mine is easily 10 years old and seems to carry 3 instances without issue, with no lag or latency - except during those events like the Map Server event when it was difficult to target foes that you could actually attack. Having well over 100 folks in a zone might have something to do with that, too. That's a lot of flowing cape graphic math, I guess.

In short - given that literally hundreds of players are playing this game without latency or lag most of the time  -  couldn't it be something to do with your system? Just asking.

It has nothing to do with my system, or the server capabilities. It has to do with me living 7,000 miles away from the servers. I'm in Shanghai, China.

All but one of the servers are located in eastern Canada. The other is in Germany. I'm asking about opening a server which would be physically located in the west coast of North America.

I've played several MMOs which have servers located in California and my latency averages between 130-200, which isn't ideal but is totally playable.

  4. Forgive me if this is already a thing, but is there any possibility that superbases could be linked to individuals and not supergroups? I know it's not hard to make your own supergroup + base, but I would love to be in a supergroup with others while not having to share the same base as them. From what I understand, this design choice was originally made due to storage limitations, but it seems that's not an issue anymore.

  5. Opening a west coast server while merging old servers is not that crazy when you think about it, and in fact there are a lot of potential benefits to it:

    - By opening a west coast server, you're now making the game available to a huge part of the world which otherwise can't easily play it. It would definitely bring an influx of players.

    - Torchbearer and Indominable have very low populations. The populations are so low that it's hard to even get into a DFB group. Think of how unenticing that is for new players. If they merged with Everlasting then they'd have solid population numbers.

    - Hardly anyone plays Torchbearer and Indominable so the naming thing shouldn't be that bad.

    - If people feel sensitive about the Torchbearer name disappearing, then just give the merged server the Torchbearer name.

    - Excelsior and Reunion (EU) would of course be left alone.

  6. I know there are many players who live in Asia or Oceania who would really love to play on a west coast server.

As an expat living in Asia, I often really struggle with lag. On a very good day, the latency is about 290, but it often has moments when it exceeds 400. 290 is surprisingly playable, but when it gets over 400, you're basically frozen. I've tried many servers including Reunion but had the same results.

Is there any chance this is in the cards?

The reasoning I read awhile ago was the concept that upscaled textures mean higher resolutions, which arent compatible with the game.

This isnt entirely how things are done with todays "upscaling", so this shouldnt be a roadblock to preventing it. Many methods keep the end result the same resolution after details, aliasing, etc have been improved upon.

I really would be neat to see something like this be an option for the game.

For the kind of upscaling that I posted in the example, there doesn't need to be a change in monitor resolution. What they did is simply take the original texture files and have the AI clean them up. In terms of performance, the only difference is that the texture loading times will slightly increase, but it shouldn't even be noticeable on modern PCs.

  8. What I'm saying is that these origin contacts can usually only be completed within a certain level range. If you click one who is beneath your level range, they are permanently stuck in your Inactive Contacts list. Also, many of them don't even have arcs, they just have random missions.

As a person who doesn't like having permanently incomplete relationships in my Inactive Contacts list, I'd love to be able to dismiss some of these origin contacts, especially the ones that don't even have arcs.

For those of you having a debate over what the origin contacts offer or how they connect to each other, just look at this link: https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Stature_Levels

  9. I only said they can't be completed beyond a certain level. For example, the level 1 origin contacts can't be completed at level 20. If you accidentally click an out-leveled origin contact, you'll have them stuck on your contact list forever.

  10. Due to the amount of origin contacts that many players don't complete (and can't be completed beyond a certain level), it would be great if we could dismiss them from our contact lists. This would reduce a lot of clutter. Technically speaking, this could be done using the same mechanism as dismissing detectives.

If you aren't sure what I mean when I say origin contacts, click this link: https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Stature_Levels

  11. I've been playing some older games lately like Morrowind and Deus Ex and have noticed that there are a lot of AI upscaling mods. These mods just take the original textures and use AI to de-pixelate them. Some of the results are pretty amazing. Here is an example: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/46221

Do any mods like this exist for CoH? It seems like it would be pretty easy for the modding community to implement and could have some pretty amazing results.

  12. I've noticed that some of the other rogue servers have a huge amount of new costume pieces. Is there any chance that these pieces could be imported into Homecoming? I'm surprised that the devs haven't reached out to the community to design and import a lot more costume pieces, as I'm sure they aren't that hard for modders to develop.

  13. I'm playing from Shanghai and also use Astrill VPN.

I haven't noticed a improvement in latency while using the VPN, and in fact have more often noticed a decrease. If you still want to experiment, I recommend testing the Speed Test option on the Astrill VPN desktop app. USA China Direct, Taiwan Supercharged, and Japan 2 have all worked fine for me.

I am currently playing on Excelsior. My ping ranges from about 280 to 500, but is usually in the low 300s. As long as it stays below ~400, the game is surprisingly playable without any hiccups (though I haven't tried PVP). I've done large group content many times without any trouble.

The biggest concern I have is suggesting that Badges (or any kind of "scoring") is added to this idea.  If the "Likes" remain entirely private to the player, then I certainly wouldn't object.  But in tying any kind of public way to review it will only "gamify" it.  Once gamified, the original intent as you describe it @Phanto would be largely lost in the pursuit of players gathering Likes from friends or alt accounts expressly for increased points.

While it has potential merit for market research, that wouldn't need to be public to players.  But then we would run in to problems with that data being potentially misinterpreted or tailored to fit an agenda.

I had unreasonable hopes for the Reputation system here on the forums ( https://forums.homecomingservers.com/topic/15491-forum-reputation/ ).  While it's been somewhat fun to review them and theorize on the implications, they've been weaponized and subverted an inordinate number of times.  Their positive informative value has seriously been eroded due to that.

I expect that something of that nature added to the game itself would be treated very, very similarly.

So . . . I'm not necessarily against it, but I do recognize it as being a potential can of worms.

(Personal experiment time!  I'll decode https://forums.homecomingservers.com/profile/42940-graspingvileterror/?status=84&type=status if someone reminds me to do so after a couple of weeks have gone by.  Will be nice to be wrong.)

See, I read the thing about some players gamifying it and don't think its necessarily bad. Having a bunch of likes for your costume won't actually give you any material benefit, so if someone wants to collect likes for their own personal satisfaction, I think its ok. Its not like having the most liked costume won't get you ad revenue. That said, I don't think many players will be interested in collecting as many likes as possible.

In regard to badges, the amount that something like this should offer should be very few (1 to 3 I'd say). Maybe you get a badge for giving one LIKE, a badge for receiving one LIKE, and a badge for receiving 10 LIKES, and that's it. The badges would exist mostly just to introduce the mechanic.

I'm giving you a like and a thumbs up for this idea. Less friction in little acts of kindness always add huge value.

While keybinds are also a good solution, I think the OP's suggestion has an extra dimension in that people who like a costume but are reluctant to contact the person for whatever reason (don't want to disturb them, shy, or just doesn't feel like talking) could get a way to express their approval too.

Yeah you totally got what I was thinking!

  16. 1 hour ago, GraspingVileTerror said:

I'm generally supportive of additional options, but I think this might be best solved with a keybind:

    /bind KEY "tell $target, ((  Nice look! ))"

If the Devs feel up to adding that as a new default keybind for new characters, I wouldn't be opposed.  Just so long as it doesn't override any players' existing personal keybinds.

What I was imagining is that you could simply right-click on the player, and a LIKE option would be among the lists of options which it already shows.

  17. How often do you see a cool looking costume in game? All the time right?

How often do you stop just to tell a player that you like their costume? For most people, not that often.

What would be really cool is if we could right click on on a player and give them a LIKE or THUMBS UP for their costume. Each time it happens, you can get a notification, and somewhere in your ID badge or Personal Info, you could see how many likes you've received. You could even give out badges for receiving or giving a certain amount of likes.

    What do you think?

If you do the old school non-ouro stuff there is a lot more content

Is any of it worth doing? Are there any actual story arcs in the non-Ouro stuff? It seems to be a lot of filler and hunt missions.

Do you think there's a chance this stuff will be added to Ouro later?
