I didn't say never to attack.

I said to target through the tank or a melee character. This will tend to keep the agro on them when you do attack. It helps blasters keep agro on the damage absorbers as well. Melee characters have built in agro drawing components that can overpower the agro of agro caused by damage alone.

I will state it again. The purpose was to help a player that was having issues because they were falling frequently in combat, and I was providing them with ways to help decrease or eliminate these defeats during combat.

I have been on more the just RO teams in the past as well.

I'm not sure of your intent in stating this.

So maybe I should say, I've been in other super groups as well as gaming with the RO teams and PUG teams. In addition, I have been in set teams that aren't all from the same supergroup but band to together on one night or another. I also used to attend Tanker Tuesdays.

And again, I don't know what the point is of saying this or how it is related to a player that is having issues as a Defender being defeated more frequently than their team mates or giving them valid suggestion on how to mitigate them falling in combat.

    Okay....

    EDIT for clarification:

Quite literally the next sentence I wrote after:

    Quote

"I've been on more than just RO teams in my COH gaming life, plenty of PUGs now and in the past."

    was:

    Quote

"I am fully aware of the focus fire, follow the tank, heal/buff methods."

That was my intention..to support the statement following it.

Above this line in my previous post:

    Quote

"....Also, leave Defenders alone (there, I've brought it back to the original topic 🙂) "

    Was this...

Just want to state (not particularly directed at the OP), EVERY AT is a support AT, focused of defeating enemies.

The OP being the one I was responding too...if that wasn't clear.  Meaning the two final statements were not directed at you.

Hopefully this makes things clear....if not, that's okay too.

Yeah, well. Works for all support sets.

    Is this Monkey?

Yeah, I was a Repeat Offender as well.

If you have a good group going then all support teams are great.

You know PUGs can be a mixed bag.

Playing with those that are  you are used to gaming with is very different than teaming with people that you haven't gamed with before that are joining with whatever level and preconceptions that they may have. Some may not understand what is going on and decide that they know better for whatever reason and sometimes try to talk big to show how tough or knowledgable they are. We all react to this in different ways. We can accept it. Learn from it. Disregard it. Simply leave. Use ignore.

This thread is old, so I think at the time I was replying someone that was getting killed a lot as a defender and that tricks that I posted do help keep you alive as a defender if you are having issues falling in battle frequently.

I labeled these as tricks and not rules. There is a difference for sure. Using a melee character as a meat shield is no different than using a wall as a shield. If you can use something to take the agro then you are playing smart and not being a child.

if you are playing smart to avoid falling in battle, you are not behaving as a child.

Alty now, was Altoholic Monkey on the live forums, yes.

I've been on more than just RO teams in my COH gaming life, plenty of PUGs now and in the past.   I am fully aware of the focus fire, follow the tank, heal/buff methods. Those tips read like rules for kids to me which is why I stated as such.   I wrote that 'tricks are kids' which means newbies to me, not that one is 'behaving or being like a child' Never attacking and only buffing will also probably keep you on your feet, but I do not know how much fun that will be.

Just want to state (not particularly directed at the OP), EVERY AT is a support AT, focused of defeating enemies.

....Also, leave Defenders alone (there, I've brought it back to the original topic 🙂

I don't believe he ever said they were rules.

He said these were tricks... as in... techniques that can be used... and he said it in response to someone who said he felt like Defenders were typically the squishiest of all.

If you're not feeling squishy? Go to town. Blast away. You do you.

If you find yourself faceplanting a lot... might be worth taking a gander at that list.

That's all I got from it anyway.

I used the word rules, twice...Sub the word 'tricks' where I wrote 'rules'.  Everything else stands as is. Those 'tricks' are for kids. 😉

    So here's the ol'Defender tricks::

    1) Never attack first.

    2) Target through the melee (especially if they are a tank with taunt. If a tank doesn't taunt, then taunt them if you feel like by not healing them. "Why aren't you healing?" "Well, I figured if taunt wasn't important for a tank, then I didn't need to heal.") - the do more damage generally, so they will keep the agro even if they don't have taunt.

    3) Single target - if you use an AoE, you might do damage to an enemy that the melee hasn't done damage to. This may happen with single target attacks, but if you use an AoE, you have a risk of having more attack you. This means that you will also be making it easier for the character you are targeting through defeat their opponents faster.

    4) Always heal and buff the character that you are targeting through first. Always.

    5) AVs are alway going to try to target a Defender first if they can. Run away around a corner as able to break LoS (line-of-sight) and ALWAYS stay out of melee range. You are the biggest threat. Not because you can do the most damage, but because you can keep those that do the most damage alive.

These are Defender tricks?! 🤔This kinda reads like rules for children --Stay in the back and play nice, also don't touch anything Melee hasn't said was okay for you to touch. All buffs/heals belong to Melee, do not use them without their permissions.

I don't think I've ever followed these rules and I've played a METRIC TON of 'support' ATs with and without Repeat Offenders.

EDIT: The confused reactions are highly amusing -  There's different ways to play and being the alpha sponge can go to any AT.  Also buffing the AT with the most HP and protection first seems needless...but ya know, those Holy Trinity rules are hard to break for some.

I clearly expressed an IO.. No one forces anyone to use an IO..
So it is sort of sad that you would contort my words to make your point.

I did not contort your words. I wrote that I was disappointed that someone who teamed with Torm would seem to not understand how to herd with hurricane. You have written how you want to keep mobs in a corner and have stated that they don't STAY in the corner but you want them to stay in the corner and thus want an IO to remove repel.

As to one IO to turn off repel. It seems unnecessary to create a single IO for one component of one power in a powerset.

Currently, there aren't any that turn OFF a power component. Set IOs modify power components, changing KB to KD. Set IOs can add additional components to powers (-def -res, +heal +regn).

I am not aware of any set IOs that subtract components from a power.

Since repel isn't a QOL issue, it probably can't assigned to Null the Gull, as off switch like the +run speed in buffs applied to players.

📢 I'm also gonna take a moment to plug RETRO RO as we will have Perfect Storms (All Storm Summoning) teaming in February on Everlasting. Details in RO Club Event Calendar

But this power does not herd it scatters.
I have played hurricane a lot I also ran with one player tormento from repeat offenders and we did a lot of storm teaching on how to use hurricane in holding  mobs into a corner.  We would run around the map pull mobs into a corner.. Then one would stand back turn on Hurricane  while both took hits.. Trading O2 heals..  mobs would be pushed into a corner and the one player would move out of the corner through the others hurricane.  Then take up a position behind and O2 and hurricane a bit off the others center, thus having a double spaced hurricane.

Hang on... If you ran with Tormentoso he was the founder of Perfect Storms - All Storm Summoning SG, I was also in the SG from Day 1.   Hurricane was different back in 2005 then it is now.   Hurricane received a nerf to how many it could push and how it pushes (slower than before) but the skills provided running with Perfect Storms should have honestly prepared you for the nerf.  It should have also taught you exactly how to herd with hurricane.

Hurricane most certainly DOES herd but I think you may want hurricane to GATHER AND LOCK them into place.  It's not going to do that as you well know. It will push them into a corner and repel will continue to move the mob along with knockback.  If you remove the repel portion you STILL won't be able to hold the mob in the corner like you imagine.   Hurricane keeps moving and pushing so the player has to keep moving to keep the mob gathered up and in place.  It's not a set it and forget it power.

I'm kinda disappointed to learn that someone who ran with Tormentoso, who loved Storm Summoning, seems to be lacking understanding of how to herd with hurricane.   Because herding with hurricane was something players came up with, I highly doubt it is what the OG devs intended.  In fact most of the standard players do not attempt to herd with hurricane.

And I'm going to say it again - *Hell No.*

    Seconded.

KB is useful on powers and those who do not like it can use an IO to change it to KD.  There's no need to change ALL KB to KD just for giggles.

Not to get to far into the KB debate because this is STILL about repel.

I didn't say that. You somehow quoted the OP that I quoted in my post.

Yes I know you didn't say that. I wrote that I was referring to the fact that you had quoted the OP in your post and disregarded the repel part. 😊

I think you're missing some of the comments and context when you're reading too fast.

But back to Sudden Acceleration :: Knockback to Knockdown proc as that has pretty much been the go-to for most players these days.

Except the OP is referring to the repel portion of hurricane and not the KB

You even quoted the OP (see below) where they mention its about the repel

    35 minutes ago, UltraAlt said:

Hurricane has knockback, which can be slotted into KD, but the Repel effect still makes the power a situational at best power.

Why not remove the Repel effect on hurricane and let stormers do their job of debuffing mobs?

Additionally, the KB of hurricane works well with the repel as KB moves them faster toward the direction you want the mob to be pushed.

To be clear the OP suggestion is about the repel portion.

  10. So I love HERDICANE and I would be hate to see repel removed. Also considering it's mimicking the high winds of a hurricane, the repel portion makes sense.

I think use of hurricane requires practice and it's player skill to use it well on teams. It really does not require any more modification to make easy mode. In fact, using hurricane currently is easier because the mobs are repelled much slower than pre-nerf.

I also benefited from teaming with other stormies to get the snow storm + hurricane + freezing rain combo down. Also firing off Lighting Storm above the mob so the KB doesn't  knock them off the rain.

Practice hurricane on grey mobs in Perez Park. Test out what it can do because it is a great mob collection tool and debuff.

Snow Storm is the best friend of hurricane for mobs running away or squeezing past the 'cane.

  11. Invision has updates to their software often and those changes are sometimes minor and sometimes major.  Depending on how the HC team applies the updates you may or may not see the changes.  You may review the general software updates on the Invision Community product update blog. https://invisioncommunity.com/news/product-updates/

Keep in mind some of the features listed on the product update blog may not be provided/enabled on this forum.  You also won't know which version of Invision Community the HC team is using, as they may custom features/code/changes.

I may or may not have helped but hopefully, I did. 🙂

  12. Everything about this game pays such homage to the original. I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm particularly happy that a Black woman was added to the character list. Also it's a nice touch that you can change the food to all veggie options. (I don't recall if it was also the same in the previous 3 games)  I'm just at Chapter 4 and that dang blonde cop lady is annoying me no end.  Still having fun though.

Not sure where you have got your information, but IPS Forum has the ability to change the amount of posts and topics per page.

It is under the Forums Setting as Topic Settings, Posts per page and Topics per page.

That setting would apply to the entire forum. In older versions of IPS/IPB members could select how many topics to view. Which is what the OP wanted.

  14. 8 of any mix or identical defenders will rock. Repeat Offenders literally made an entire network of SGs based on this theory! 😁 Buff/debuff stacking is amazing!

The trick is figuring out the best tactics and powers selection for the team.

Just wanted to clarify cause, folks forget... Increase Density's resistance portion is a targeted AoE, the status protection portion is still Single Target as it always has been to match the other single target status protection buffs.

  16. Having used/admin an IPB (Invision Power Board) forum for over a decade, it was possible to choose the number of posts per page and posts had numbers.

But that was before various improvements. Some things are eliminated to keep a software updated, consistent and modern.

    • Confused 1
  17. Unfortunately, this may be a software limitation issue that isn't easily solved by the Dev/Admins.  At some point very soon IPB will have its own mobile app which may address the the font size issue.  The small screen version of the forum seems to stick to a specific font size.
