  1. Wbemprox.dll is a part of Wine, it is used for WMI calls in Windows apps. WBEM and WMI is the same thing: a hardware surveying feature used in corporate networks. I doubt it's going to stop the game from working if it is deleted.  Wbemprox regularly appears in Wine's patch notes, so updating Wine will likely replace it.

I can't rule out that the file is/isn't infected.  But if the file keeps coming up, you can send the file to https://www.virustotal.com/en/ to verify if it is the Windows or Wine version, or actually infected.

  2. I apologize, I assumed you had alt logins you don't have.  (Assumptions and online tech help often are unavoidable.)

Regardless, is "Remember User Name" checked when you login?  If it is, then, "C:\Games\Homecoming\Accounts\YOURNAMEHERE\playerslot.txt" may need to be deleted.  Next time you open the client, the file will be remade and you should be able to move your characters how you like them from there on. (I'm also assuming your installation is in C:\Games\Homecoming, and the file is being written in the first place.)

I know someone mentioned they got it working in Linux, which should in theory be similar... The only "Mac" I have is a Hackintosh that I hate messing with, so not going to be a lot of help.

Sorry to necro a post in a living thread, but I can offer some baseline suggestions for running this on Mac.

I can get it to run in Wine Stable version 8 and newer, with some considerations.

    I'm assuming the following:

    • You have not installed Wine or any other apps using Wine other than City of Heroes (which uses a portable installation: if this doesn't work, wiping out Wine in Homebrew and removing the helper apps with it won't phase it.) CoH Modding Tool is only going to change physical files in the client, so it doesn't need to be in the same "prefix" as City of Heroes, as you'll see below, it doesn't even have to use the same copy of Wine.

If you do use Wine on Mac for other games, more than this will be needed concerning managing your Wine Prefixes correctly.  (Best practice of Wine is not to use the same Wine Prefix for running multiple apps.  That way a software failure doesn't impact other apps that you run.)

    • I'm also using MacOS Sonoma, older MacOS installs may vary.

Tips below.  Only offering tips, and not a step-by-step guide, because I'm not equipped or have enough time on my hands to be on-call Tech Support for Mac users.  No guarantees or promises.

    Spoiler
    1. I would NOT use the Wine that comes with Island Rum/LaunchCat.  Nothing wrong with it, but it's going to be optimized to run City of Heroes, so there's no .NET support in it.  Either you'd modify the copy which would be replaced when LaunchCat has an update for Wine, or do what I did... and leave it be.  Instead use Homebrew (brew.sh) and install Wine that way (brew install wine-stable).  Wasteful to have two copies of Wine?  Which would you rather have: the app working right now, or waiting for someone to do it for you?

    2. A little game of leapfrog: Once Wine is installed, use Homebrew to install Winetricks (brew install winetricks).  Then Winetricks can install .NET 6 (winetricks dlls dotnet6), which will be able to run CoH Modding Tool.  All of this on the default Wineprefix of .wine in your user directory: that way, it's click to start. (See assumptions above.)

    3. Install the CoH Modding Tool in any folder you like on your User account.  (/Users/YOURUSERNAME/CMT for example.) Run the app.  MacOS will throw permission prompts when you run this for the first time, so be prepared to head to Settings and manually approve the app to run.

    4. When CoH Modding Tool runs for the first time and asks for a location, use the same one as the Homecoming Launcher: Z:/Applications/coh.

(This is a feature in Wine:  The C Drive points to the Wine Prefix install locations, where the Z Drive points to the entire MacOS hard disk, so the path /Applications/coh is valid once LaunchCat is installed.)

You're not going to be able to add the app to Launchpad or the Dock without Apple magic involved, so navigating to where you unpacked the app and running it manually in Finder is likely the best bet you'll have.  The Dock will keep "wine preloader" as an Icon that does nothing.  Launchpad will straight out deny it.

Finally, remember Brian Krebs' Three Rules for Internet Safety.  This means you'll be babysitting Wine, Winetricks, Homebrew and .NET for regular updates on your own.  If this doesn't sound like a good time, I'd suggest finding another answer.  With this answer, if you do screw it up (and don't use Wine for anything else), hitting eject is easy:  use Brew to remove Wine, Winetricks, and delete the folder you installed CoH Modding Tool.  Done.  (Want to start over?  Use Homebrew to wipe Wine and Winetricks out, not just remove it.  All in the user guide.)

And like Michiyo said, app support outside of Windows is on your own.

I'm pretty sure you'll need emulation software like Parallels. PC games won't run natively on M2 chips.

Rosetta 2 handles this for free.  Parallels sub not required.

To install it via Terminal (or find out if it is already installed):

    /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

  5. Is it the Matthew Habashy arc?

The first arc uses Solo Missions to isolate the player for part of the story.  Checking the Fire Cave and visiting the Hellion hideout in disguise only one player can enter.

There are other solo missions in the arcs for Part II (Costel and Fields).  Part III (Thierry) should be able to team up with friends for the whole ride.  Shining Stars and the other arcs in AP should be unaffected.

Let me know if that helps.

Not a huge amount of info on this one, other than:

    • Supposedly follows the path a Program that wants to become a real live boy. Pinocchi2.0, I guess.
    • The character of ARES is from an older version of the Legacy development that was canned.
    • Whether protagonist, antagonist or a mixture of both... no idea, though ARES suggests they're military software.
    • Daft Punk will not be reuniting for this gig. Which is a damn shame, frankly.

100% on the Daft Punk.  Makes Legacy that much more special to me.

There's no shortage of Retro Synth music out there, but it'll be an interesting choice of composer regardless.  (Or lack thereof if they go atmospheric/cinematic score only and shun more detailed music.)

  7. Does that system have any software that would interfere with mouse activity?  Like a helper app or something in the System Tray?

If you're not sure, Win 8 and later you can open Task Manager and in Startup disable anything not made by Microsoft and reboot.  Try the game.  If the mouse works, one at a time enable Startup apps until the behavior returns.

Otherwise if it still happens with Startup apps disabled, go ahead and reenable them all.

  8. I had no clue January 4th was going to be huge.

A month before, I was making a guide to Homecoming specific changes since Issue 24 for new players to brush up on.  I didn’t realize how big of a list that was going to turn out to be, so I sectioned it up and put collapsible headings.  Now I think it’s ready to be dissected by wiki editors to adjust, add and trim away.

But also for new players: here’s a field guide for coming back to Paragon City and environs.

I'm just gonna clarify for the record, I don't care about the Double XP. I just think it kind of sucks that Excelsior and Everlasting don't even get the invasions to celebrate. Like, can we at least do that without the XP? I'd quite enjoy being able to use all of my Everlasting native toons to rock some Rikti face in Atlas Plaza for the week, but instead we get nothing at all. That... kinda sucks to be blunt. You're leaving people out of the celebration.

Speaking for Everlasting, we have enough people to be able to run MSR and Hami at least twice a day.  I think we're doing fine.

  10. The fun part for any new player: Costume Creator.

Unlike WoW and other MMOs, costumes are completely decoupled from gear choices (Enhancements don't affect your look at all.)  You can make your character look however you like from the start.

You have six costume slots to start with (six different looks).  You don't have to do them all right away, but costume edits at a tailor (Icon or Facemaker) are FREE until Level 10 if you want to get your look just right.  At Level 10, you gain a free costume change token every 10 levels to cover the remaining four slots you can earn in-game for a total of ten costumes per character.  All other costume edits cost in INF (the more parts you edit, the higher the fee) with Level 10 being the cheapest and Level 50 being full price.

You can also save costumes as a .costume file on your computer. For example if you want to make a family of heroes who look similar, or want to share the costume with another player, or want a backup of a costume to return to in case you make a mistake you don't like.

Biggest catch of the system: Costumes are gender-typed (Male, Female and yes, Humongous) so parts on a Male toon won't load on a Female or Humongous and thrice-versa. (Is that even a phrase?)  You can mix genders on the same character if you prefer: want a Bruce Banner Hulk, or got an Iron Man in a large Exo-Frame suit?  Male and Humongous costume slots can be done. Or you can be a shapeshifter who can be anything. (Got to visit a tailor for the "Plastic Surgeon" contact to do that.)

I like to play stealthily characters, stealth archers, melee stuff and I generally actually like to tank stuff. I did try to look at archetypes and quickly got lost.

If it helps: Archetype, Powerset, Powers.  Always in that order.  Archetypes are sweeping groups of heroes, with powers being specific abilities.  Powersets are the glue in between.

Stealthily characters: Look at Illusion powersets (For Controller & Dominator archetypes) and Stalker Archetype (Stealth + Melee, single target attacks).  If those don't work, Concealment is a power pool choice.  (Deciphering game-speak: you can add Stealth to any character you like!)

Archers: available on three Archetypes, so you can choose between --

Blasters: High damage attacks with Melee backup powers (just in case someone closes in).  Got a Cliff Barton or Kate Bishop type rambling in your brain?  This might be them.  Can't take a beating, though.

Corruptors: Ranged attacks with debuff and support abilities.  Good for someone who leans on the bow, but has abilities to help others.  (Red Mage? Post Apocalyptic Warrior?  Up to you.)

Sentinels: Single Target Ranged attacks with Self-Defensive abilities.  More of a Ranger/Hunter Type.

Tanks are melee in this game.  (Closest 'ranged tank' is a Sentinel, but they can't take as much aggro.)  As well as their counterparts Brutes who aggro less enemies but have a rage mechanic that boosts their damage the more they attack.  The other melee choices are Stalker (already mentioned; best for single target fighting, they cannot tank at all) and Scrappers (less aggro but more damaging attacks than a tank or brute.)

  12. You can put in a ticket with Support for this kind of problem.  Click on Support above.  (Support tickets are confidential between you and HC Staff.)

Include as much as you can about your lost account: character names, biographies, costumes you remember, what level your main toons are.  Anything you remember to help prove you own the account.  While the email address may not be likely revealed, the email provider, or your forum name might be a hint they can share to help you.

We need more information on this as well.

Similar to the end of the Safe Mode client, I imagine they may tell Tequila users to install HC launcher and report any technical issues they have left to fix.  They can't fix preferential ones. ("I've used Tequila for years, so 😝" isn't fixable.)

After that period, they'll just take the manifests offline on a given date and that's the end.  Tequila would only work at that point with other servers or Titan Network's utilities. (Or anyone else who offers a manifest for something else.)

I doubt there will be a "you've got two weeks, stop using Tequila" kind of deal, and they have plenty of work to do in other areas first (Last MassivelyOp article gave "very very soon" as a ETA of the Beta cycle for the next Page release) but Tequila and Island Rum support (along with any other manifest patcher... is Penguin on the Rocks still a thing?) my guess is they are very likely all going to stop being able to patch Homecoming this year at the latest.

  14. Accounts are linked to your email address.  Do you remember which email address you used when you signed up?  If you do, you can try a password reset.

If you have a hard time remembering and you didn't delete the welcome email, try searching "Homecoming" in your Inbox, Spam folder, or any other folder you'd use to sort mail.

    Then it's a simple process:

    1. Reset your forum password.  Type the email address, then open the message and click the recovery link.  Set a new forum password.

    2. Login to the forums with that account, visit the Game Account Center and set a new client password. (Don't need to remember the old one.  Changes take effect immediately.)

The game client would then be the only piece left.  Files saved locally will be gone (costumes, power customizations saved, any AE work not published, mods, etc.) but you will have your characters back.

  15. Hell, even the forum footer is making me smile!
