What I mean is that a subscription service would make it difficult, if not impossible, to keep them from turning a profit and, thus, jeopardising the situation; that situation being that NCSoft is allowing Homecoming to run its intellectual property as entertainment, rather than as a money-making venture. Clearly.

Sorry, I think I misinterpreted what you were suggesting. You also understood it would be difficult to keep any kind of automatic donation system from generating too much revenue to be considered nonprofit, even though you'd be happy to subscribe to such a thing if it were possible (as would I, having again missed the window to donate to server upkeep and other related costs). Now that I think about it, what WOULD be great, is if we could contribute sequentially, rotating through everyone who wishes to donate each month, so everyone gets a chance to "cycle through," capping the max donation at, say, $20/month. That way everyone who could afford to contribute could do so, and those with excess funds would be contributing the max amount every time they cycled through.

That's exactly what I mean. Cheers.

Then what you mean is that the folks running Homecoming should try and earn a profit running servers that utilize the  intellectual property that still belongs to NCSoft by allowing a subscription service? You do realize that if they went that far, NCSoft would almost certainly take legal action and shut Homecoming down altogether, right?

I'd definitely sign up for an automatic donate system, but wouldn't that be difficult to police; as I'm sure one of the conditions of NCSoft's allowing the game to run is that it doesn't turn a profit?

The only problem I foresee is currently they are simply covering costs. All money that goes in, goes directly to the server costs, nothing more, nothing less. A sub service would almost certainly generate excess funds. While that would be fine for future extension costs (new shards, for instance), it would almost certainly be excessive to keep them out of the nonprofit category.

Awesome. This sounds just like work for me. I am a data center facilities engineer with certs in Cisco, Microsoft, HVAC, Telecom, and a dozen other things with a EE (things have changed a lot in computers and communications when I started in 1976). My wife of 44 years has exactly the same qualifications so you can guess neither of us ever hear "hey honey, what did you do today?" lol. Dare I say she is working on City of Titans with her spare time for the last 5 or so years.

Thankfully, at age 65 I am about 13 months from retirement. Thank you for doing all you do to keep the greatest game ever online.

Wow, think of all that time you're going to have to play CoH. I am incredibly jealous. Enjoy your much deserved break from the work force. 🙂

Woohoo! I am so happy. I was just traveling through the timeline to get some doughnuts but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about here - found a glass of milk in a fridge that didn't belong to me for sure - tripped over some wires and spilled my drink all over some techy - science - beep boop - robot computer box stuff. Well...long story short it - EXPLODED. It will probably be fine though. Anyways, now i'm here. Anyone want a doughnut?

Why is my City of Heroes dow.... oooh! Doughnuts!

Every month towards the end of the month they open a donation link.
Once they have enough they shut it back down.

I've been trying to donate but they usually get all they need in about 20 mins.

One of these days, the donations are going to be so fast and furious, we're going to have the next month covered before they can close it down, you just wait and see!

  7. Thank you so much for sharing the details of what is going on. I, for one, am happy to donate what I can if you find a better, but more expensive, alternative. (Nothing crazy, but I'll weigh the total cost against the number of likely contributors).

Oh, and just to be clear, this won't be a one time donation, but a recurring one. 😉

We ahd literally JUST started Synapse TF and zoned in to Steel Canyon from Skyway when the servers went boom. We didn't even make it to the first mission, haha.

We were about halfway done with ours. Hurts so bad, especially on a clear all...
