    Usually MMOs.

Yes sir. A year ago today I told my boss, "Ok, I'm going. I'll see you in a couple of weeks when this blows over."

We haven't been back since, other than a skeletal crew to keep stuff maintained.

I can understand 100% just personally not clicking with the bar/nightclub setting for casual RP. Especially when it would just make no sense for a particular character to hang out there.

Yeah. None of my cryptids would have any reason to even go to a bar, much less have an idea of how to act when they got there.

  3. There are places that might work, but you'd have to work up enough people going to create it's own gravity, in a sense.

Which University is most used? Maybe get a few people to go there and do some RP-ing. you might suck people in.

Same thing for the Market, magical-type places, etc.

  4. I would have a hard time coming up with a reason for casually stopping by most of those. That's the biggest thing the bar scene provides. I would think alternatives would have to provide the same thing.

Yes . . . but to the point of it:  Can't we do that networking at a place that -isn't- a bar/nightclub?   Please?

Possibly. What are the location-agnostic requirements for a successful "networking" zone?

    1. A reason to casually stop by (examples include parks, stores, banks, etc)

    2. Safety. The first time you have your pickup line interrupted by a demon attack is funny. The 10th time is infuriating.

    3. Neutral ground. This isn't as important as the first two if it's in addition to Pocket D, instead of replacing Pocket D.

    4. Props. So much easier to have things around to play off of, such as chairs, lights, trash cans, etc.

    What else?

Once that's sorted, you can start looking for places that might work.

That's my number 1 objection. Number 2 is exposing them to crime/fighting violence, Number 3 is the often terrible effect on ongoing-roleplay.  Number 4 is how badly many (not all, to be fair) are portrayed.

After some of the vile stuff I saw people talking about in Sims 4 forums...and mod requests I saw...

Let's just say, not much could surprise me now.

If it's people goofing around in an actual busy RP area like the bars everyone typically gathers at, that's another story entirely. Nobody likes the guy that spams powers and disruptive emotes in the middle of the bar full of people trying to RP.

Even when I'm not in "RP Mode", I turn off my spammy powers like Shadow Fall, because I can see how annoying that would be. Imagine you're just having a conversation with someone. Then they disappear from view. Then you notice everyone, including yourself...yep. Invis. That'd be distracting.

Listen, I'm going to be honest here. Take a bit from this thread if you want, try to accommodate others if you'd like. But don't overexert yourself. As Hajynx showed a few posts ago you will never please everyone all the time. If you are going to take a step back each time disapproves you will more quickly run out of room than you will run out of people disapproving.

Play your homages, play your lifted character, play your original concepts. Just have fun. Despite what this thread says there is far less RP police out there than there are people refusing to RP because concept.

I hear you. I'm not "worried" about it. It's always good to know what the reaction of the crowd will be, if you can manage it. I've got characters that are fun to play but might irritate other people.

I still have those characters and love to play them. But if the reaction had been "Oh. God. Ew. Yuck", I'd know not to stroll in Pocket D and expect a warm welcome.

SG idea: A super team where every member is some form of Superman expy and the leadership changes daily from all the petty internal squabbles over which one gets to be the Superman of the group.

Hardly a pet peeve but something I've noticed before that always elicits a chuckle: When players at the Pocket D upstairs bar just suddenly "nope out" over the rails and jump to the floor below.

Like they're walking around, looking for a conversation or maybe they just finished one, or something, and then with walk on and everything just fling themselves 5 meters to the floor below. I mean we're all supers and probably everyone could shrug off that fall, so IC I suppose there is nothing wrong with that. But  something about how the player will spend 45 seconds to strut up the stairs, but the exit has to be quick and in a hurry.

    I'm guilty.

When I'm zipping around accomplishing stuff, I don't really "have" (or take) the time. I've got my mission and I've got no time for distractions.

Much like I ma in real life, much to my wife's amusement and consternation.

I'll put it another way:  Show me something you think is an original idea, and I'll show you how it (or something like it) has already been done in the comics.

Not original, but what about folklore and cryptids? Stuff inspired by tales of things like the Mothman or Bigfoot?

  12. What do you guys think about character mashups?

I have a Superman/Captain America mashup. He's not named Steve or Clark. The words "Kryptonian" and "Super Soldier Serum" have nothing to do with him. He's not even Causasian.

That said, he's very strongly influenced by Superman and Captain America (or Statesman and Blue Steel) in terms of costume and powers.

Does that pass the smell test, or too copy-cat?

    Pretty much.

It'd be different if playing on the DC universe MMO, if there is a RP community there at all.

In that one my character was sort of attached to the Bat family/Birds of prey at least in my Single Player RP head cannon

But its City of Heroes you already have Expies of all that stuff.   Why play a JLA SG?  Why not the Freedom Phalanx Reserve?  There's even an accolade.

I have never seen an incident of RP in DCUO.

So, would that make him Science origin then?

I don't know; it seems his powers are still a product of his species' natural characteristics, even if triggered by being in a different environment.  I naturally have the ability to leap high into the air and cover great distances - if I'm on the moon.  What makes it natural is that every other human (who has grown up on Earth and developed muscles under Earth's gravity) has the same ability.

The moon isn't your natural environment.

This. While I’m no hardcore RPer, even seeing these makes me sad. A whole game of creativity, and then you literal have clones passed as «Homages» like these. For those who do this, do you, but still, doing this and claiming to be creative is well...contradictory. My other issue thats made me a bit reluctant is the abundance of JLA/Avengers SGs. Mostly because A.) there is not enough vill RPSGs that would even act as the antithesis to these (there are not enough vill SGs period but thats another matter), and B.) I tend to assume that these SG’s will cross the line into direct ripoff territory during their arcs. Never been in one but it’s always a thought in the back of mind.

People interested in doing something like that could look at the Amalgam series of comics Marvel & DC put out after the Marvel vs DC series. Clever mashups are an art form in and of themselves.

Why is it everyone else's responsibility to mollify the person who decided to roleplay an asshole?

Essentially the point I was making as well.

Whether it's morally correct or not, if a character is an asshole, it's not unreasonable to be reacted to as one.

    thats not the point,

my point is that putting someone on /gignore, like some people in the forum stated they do, without telling them OOC "hey i dont want to play with your character leave me alone" is just not the way to go in my opinion and i think i m not only asking for my self if i ask you to do this befor putting someone on /gignore i bet most people who play such a character would be understanding and will leave you alone.

Which are you more interested in? Being "right" or having people want to play with you?

It would seem pretty obvious that specific character is proving to be a problem getting others to want to associate with it. Are you going to expect everyone else to change their behavior to match what you want? Or are you going to change yours to fit in better with the people around you?

everyone else started to ignore me after a short while.

That should have been your clue.

Nobody has to role-play with you. If you want someone to RP with you, you're gonna have to meet them at least half way.

You also talked about people taking the time to see through your character's bullshit.

Even in real life, if someone's an asshole to me, I'm not gonna ponder it over. I'm not going to poke and prod and cajole and convince them to tell me what's wrong or show me who they really are.

I'm going to ignore them, at minimum.

This isn't my job. If someone (or their character) is so unpleasant that I don't think RPing with them is going to be fun, I won't do it.

Maybe I'm just hurting myself. Maybe I'm missing out on an awesome experience. That could be. It could also be that I end up wasting time and energy and end up frustrated with a RP session that just wasn't fun. I'd rather potentially miss out on something than waste my time.

Perhaps a suggested handicap you can opt in to for RPers then as part of your difficulty ratings. No base or hospital rez (unless the map has a prison I suppose).  You need Awaken, a self rez or one of the team to do it.

That makes a lot of sense.

    faceclaims.

faceclaims are really, really gross and people should stop using them.

stop claiming people's faces. stop trawling people's social media for pics and then posting them as something your character did.

    🤮

it's one thing, by the way, to use a face reference for commissioned art. it's another (disgusting) thing entirely to rp someone's actual life.

    Wait...that's a thing?

    That's so creepy weird.
