Dark is much friendlier set for the newer player in my opinion. It's a great kit of abilities, and mostly easy to understand. Whenever I have a friend who is new to the game and they want to play support, its a set I push them toward.

In comparison Cold is a fantastic, but very specialized set. To me it's one of the most complex kits in the game. It's complicated enough that it's hard to even explain the reasons it is good. Most players on a standard playthrough probably wouldn't pick up on it being an S-Tier set valued by players at the top end of play.

So it seems like Cold may be better in specific scenarios, but Dark just has options for pretty much anything? Haha as a new player, the idea of having a heal is nice

Two big questions I'd have is 1) How patient are you for key power unlocks and 2) Do you plan to IO?

IMO if the answer to the questions above are "Not very patient" and "No plans to IO" Dark is the clear winner. Dark Miasma gets a very strong heal as its T1, and has most of its bread and butter powers by level 20. It has its -Resist power by level 2, compared to 35/38 for Cold. Most of the powers function reasonably well with an SO or basic enhancement build.

Cold is the dead opposite of that. It gets its shields early, but its two most key power unlocks have to wait til levels 35 and 38 respectively. You get a strong AV debuff at level 28, probably before you really need it. On top of that, powers like Benumb and Heat Loss aren't that great out of the box. Only with excellent Recharge do they reach their potential and do some of the things you hear are great about Cold. Cold also has no self heal, so you probably need some Defense on top of that. I don't want to make Cold sound terrible, just paint a realistic picture. It's not a great set at low levels, and is only so-so at high levels until you kit it out.

All of that said, with commitment either of these characters once kitted out is an A Tier or even S Tier performer, depending on the content you bring them to. You won't go wrong with either selection, so I'd pick the one that appeals to your style most.

This was very helpful advice, thank you. It’s been a while for me, so probably playing something with an easier leveling experience (dark) will be good.

I absolutely do plan to fully slot them out… once I figure out builds and sets 😂

  3. Hi all,

First off, thanks for all the suggestions in my other post. I’ve settled on trying a Corruptor, since I never played one on live!

I really liked the look of Water Blast, but a few people pointed out that it might not have the damage for tough single targets (AV/GM’s). Ice, however, was mentioned a lot. I’m torn between 2 combos:

Ice/Dark: Seems like it could have good synergy. Dark brings a heal, which is nice for Ice.

Ice/Cold: Seems like an obvious synergy. No heal, but a lot of control.

Any opinions/suggestions on pairings or which combo to go? Kind of thinking about playing at range/hover, but not married to the idea.

Both of these combos are likely to be pretty great. Given the choice at hand, on a Corruptor, I'd probably go Water/Cold, just because Water patches up the self heal Cold otherwise lacks.

As with all things, you'll want to think about whether you might be happier with a Defender. The Defender gets:

    • +30% solo damage on Defender, versus Chance to Scourge on Corruptor. I'll need someone else to math out how this translates to real world output.
    • The same -Regen, since it doesn't flex based on AT
    • Better -Recharge (probably doesn't matter)
    • Stronger team shields (probably doesn't matter)
    • Better self heal (may not matter)
    • Better endurance/recovery from Heat Loss (doesn't matter since there is so much of it you'll cap with either)
    • Better modifiers for personal defense and resistance (may matter, best reason to consider a Defender)
    • Better -Resistance in Heat Loss, but not in Sleet (probably doesn't matter much, but someone could prove me wrong)
    • Better ATOs (IMO)--especially for Cold, because it has a heal. But, Cold/Water specifically can heal itself, and its less critical

Note that Cold Defenders actually get slightly shortchanged on Sleet. When Cold got ported to Defenders, the debuff should have risen from -30% to -35% Resistance, but stayed -30%. It's especially strange because Freezing Rain, which is the same power with a different name in the Storm Summoning set, does flex. There's a possibility this could be fixed in some future patch. I imagine if that happens the Defender value would go up and Corruptor stay the same, though that isn't guaranteed.

I found this thread and I’m interested. Are there any Defender combos you’d recommend that you feel are just optimal on a Defender? Something that could solo hard content and take on AV’s?

It is, my buddy @Boomie ran and had alot of videos on it. But, its not quick in any way.

I prefer Defenders for debuffs thats personal preference, the key is going to lie in how much -regen you can put on your enemy.

There have been alot of great recommendations already made on various combinations on different ATs. Patience is going to be your weapon when fighting anything, a solid build, and tactics vs that specific enemy type.

Some of them you won't be able to solo, never seen Hami nor the Seed, or the Arachnos flyer soloed.

A safe bet for a starting killer would be a Ill/Rad, Ill/TA, or Ill/Dark. The /Rad probably the safest easiest one, plus Accelerate Metabolism will help with basically everything +dmg, +recovery, +rech, etc, and the debuffs are top notch.

PLUS, there are a ton of builds already out there to get you started.

Yeah, Ill/Dark or Rad has piqued my interest. Trying to see if there is a Defender combo that could sway me haha

Degenerative Interface has a -HP side, and is a fairly standard recommendation for melee ATs looking to hit hard targets.  I am not as familiar with Corrs or Controllers, so I am not sure if that is similar for those or if there is a better choice.

Truck on down to the Pylon and Trapdoor threads in the Scrapper section for tons of info on Rad/SS or EM/Rad.  Folks post from all ATs in those threads, so you'll see tank and brute builds that are purpose made for hard targets and +4x8 soloing.

    Great suggestion, thanks!

Yeah, if I were to do it on melee, it'd be an Energy Melee/Radiation Armor Brute.

On the contrary, Corruptor does great on giant bags of HPs.  Once you get them down to about 40% HP, they just positively melt thanks to Scourge.

I know I said I only had time for one toon, but maybe I can slow level one ranged and one melee. Was thinking Rad/SS tanker for melee, but EM/Rad Brute seems like a great synergy.

Good to know about Scourge though.  Now to settle on either a Corruptor or Controller combo for ranged 😂

  8. 5 minutes ago, Troo said:

@ArcadianIV maybe stick with Controller and Defender if you wanna solo AVs & GMs.

I love my Corruptors and I'm sure they do what others do but giant bags of HP may be counter to the Corruptor magic that is Scourge.

That could make sense. Still newer, so I was curious how Scourge would take effect. Probably better for clearing solo TF’s, but tougher against hard targets.

I wasn’t sure if there was a Corruptor secondary that provided -HP, or any incarnate ability’s/whatever they’re called that does that that could give it a synergy. Since you’re a Corruptor player, you probably know some good Defender combos… Any you’d recommend?

I soloed GMs on my Rad/Rad Brute, (before I deleted it as I decided that I didn't like Radiation Melee nor Radiation Armor).

Taking a look at the melee archetypes, it seems like Rad Armor or Bio Armor would be the ones you’d try to solo tough targets with since they have the -regen component

  10. 2 minutes ago, The_Warpact said:

It depends, I've soloed Scrapyard on my Rad/Ice tank before, I've seen a Mind/Psi Dom defeat the Freedom Phalanx, and Elec/Cold troller solo damn near every GM/AV.

It just depends on the build and AT, although I've never seen a brute or Sent do anything solo, but, that's just my experience.

Elec/Cold sounds like a cool concept! Was just digging through the forums and see you have a lot of experience War! Any suggestions for pairings with a Corruptor or Defender that could do TF’s or fight AV’s?

I have an Illusion/Dark Affinity Controller.  It's a monster.  I know I've mentioned it in thread before, but Trick Arrow also has a massive amount of -regen and -resist as well.

I keep overlooking TA, thanks for pointing it out.

Yeah, it keeps seeming like Ill/Dark is a true God Mode Do It All combo.

  12. 4 minutes ago, InvaderStych said:

As others have said, with Giant Monsters on the table for soloing, you'll need debuffs. Basically a GM has a little more than double the HP of an average AV so their Regen can be very difficult (probably impossible) to beat without debuffs.  -Res, -Regen, and -HP are your allies here.

Tons of great suggestions thus far.

For soloing Task/Strike forces and AV class targets you're basically spoiled for choice.  Most melee, perma-doms, masterminds, some blasters, etc.  Setting to +4 narrows the field slightly, but not really all that much. All of the previous suggestions made up-thread will also excel in these encounters.

If anyone's got a melee toon that eats Giant Monsters on the regular, I'd love to see it though.  There's got to be an outlier out there someplace! 😉

Nice! So Corruptors, Defenders and Controllers are probably where I’m looking. On the Controller end, I’m thinking Illusion Dark. For Corruptors/Defenders, do you have any suggestions on pairings? I keep coming back to /Dark, /Cold and /Rad. Those seem to be the 3 that offer both -regen and -resist. Not sure about -HP.

  13. 4 minutes ago, LynxNordique said:

In my opiniion, I like all of them and I cannot say one is better than the other. Earth does less damage but is offers better raw controls, very easy to setup. Illusion is probably the king, since it can be paired with almost every secondary and still be a GM and AV killer, the moment Phantom Army can be made perma. Darkness control in somewhere between Illusion and Earth with good controls and good damages if the Haunts are perma. But it works probaly best with a secondary that can help stacks some additional -tohit.

The stacking of -tohit seems like it would almost make a Dark/Dark controller untouchable. I guess Phantom Army really makes Illusion king though, as you said.

I've soloed damn near every GM on my Ill/Traps, high rech is the key. Perma PA, multiple mortars, etc. Killed Eochai and Jack at the same time.

There are quite a few combinations that can do it.

That is cool to hear. Would you say controllers are the premiere archetype for this kind of thing (soloing GM’s, TF’s, etc)?

  15. 6 minutes ago, LynxNordique said:

/Rad and /Dark Controllers, especially /Darkness affinity Controllers They are not the fastest, but they deliver and provide safety. Some of them can solo Jack of Iron and Eochai at the same time. For the Primaries, Illusion, Darkness or Earth Control will work (because of their pets).

/Rad is faster for controller, but less safe.

I totally agree that debuffs are King against monters and AV.

/Dark Affinity seems like a real cool set. What would you rank as best primary for it between Illusion, Dark and Earth?

  16. 25 minutes ago, SeraphimKensai said:

Illusion/rad is the classic I'm going to go solo lusca so hold my beer toon.

Debuffs are King for hard targets like monsters and AV's.

I remember Ill/Rad being the classic on live! /Dark and /Cold seem like they could pair decently as well. Never played a controller, how is their playstyle compared to a Corruptor? More drop your pets and than start debuffing?

  17. 8 minutes ago, SeraphimKensai said:

Probably a good idea to make a farmer on a 2nd account to grind your influence to spend as a tricking out a corruptor to solo GM/AV content.

Ice/dark is amazing. So is Ice/storm, ice/trick arrow, and ice/cold (but that's more for teaming).

Nice! I guess it seems like Corruptors are the way to go when it comes to soloing tough content or AV/GM’s. Ice/Dark seems like it could be pretty spicy.  Any other archetypes/powersets you’d recommend as well?

  18. 5 minutes ago, Apparition said:

You mentioned soloing in your original post, so I would not suggest Cold nor Thermal.  They are both great support sets, but neither are really solo friendly.  I would go with Dark, Rad, or Trick Arrow instead.  Preferably Rad or Trick Arrow.

Yes, Rad has a small heal.

Nice. Dark and Rad both seem nice to me. I know you said Ice would pair well with Rad. Any other primaries you’d suggest pairing with either of those? Water Blast seems interesting to me, probably because I think I stopped playing before it was added.

  19. 36 minutes ago, Apparition said:

Ice Blast/Radiation Emission Corruptor would be pretty great for that.  You'd hit like a truck and have a ton of debuffs, and some self-buffs and a minor heal for yourself.  Plus Scourge.  Scourge is love.

Ice Blast/Trick Arrow Corruptor would be pretty great for that as well.  Trick Arrow is pretty much the best debuff set in the game, (fight me, Cold lovers :classic_tongue: ).  Plus, again, Scourge.

If you don't want Ice Blast, try Fire Blast or Beam Rifle.  Both would be great with Radiation Emission and Trick Arrow as well.

There's also Demons/Dark Miasma Mastermind and Demons/Thermal Mastermind.  Thugs/Dark Miasma Mastermind would work as well.

FWIW, I've been soloing GMs lately on a Thugs/Time Manipulation Mastermind.  It doesn't pack as much debuff oomph as Dark Miasma or Thermal, but it gets the job done.

Thanks for this. Corruptors do seem pretty appealing. I was looking at /Dark, /Cold and /Thermal.  Rad I remember being strong from Live. Ice could be a front runner. Less resisted damage type I assume?

Also, there is a heal in /Rad?

  20. Hey all,

Finally got setting this game up, so happy to see it up and running. I played on Live since issue 1, so the nostalgia hits me hard.

A little background on my current status: I’m a father of 4, age 6 and under. So pretty busy! Gaming time can be limited, so I’ll probably only have the time to commit to ONE hero, at least at the start.

With that being said… I’d love to challenge myself with tough content. +4 AV’s, GM’s, solo TF’s, the works.  I’m very open on archetype as well. Be a tanker and tank the Universe? Works for me. Should I scrapper lock? Let’s go. Corruptors/defenders seem pretty appealing since they have a lot of tools.

All that being said: what do you recommend for an archetype and powerset combo they will let me go God Mode? I’d like to throw everything I have into this toon!

    Appreciate it all.

Holy crap I found my new baby and it's Fire/Ma. But lets start from the beginning.

    I first tested a Shield/EM...

      Reveal hidden contents

...and it was so boring... so slow... But, with amplifiers bought at level one per usual, it boasted of 37% defense so it was plenty sturdy.

...and yet it did not boast of less deaths than other characters since it took so long to go through a pack of mobs that they had more time to whittle me down. Not having a heal or endurance recovery was not a big problem. I just used Recovery Serum when my bar got low and then used that time to collect blue insps. When Recovery Serum entered cooldown I would live off those blue insps.

The damage was a problem though. I found myself in the bad old days of waiting for things to finish recharging and using EM's mediocre AoE to whittle things down. I had high hopes for Against All Odds to act as a mini Fury but though its effects were kinda there and I'm sure it made each pack go down a few seconds faster it just never felt like a big boost.

This is partly because I didn't have Energy Punch to fill the gaps though but I had no room for it in the low levels.

Seriously though, slow and boring. It felt bad to return to the old ways of carefully look over a pack to see if a hostage was hiding there and then avoid it at seeing it was not. Tab target, pick something that had more HP, use Total Focus (the build's champ), slowly get there. How slowly? Well, my amplifiers ran out just before Synapse was finished. That means it took me about 7 hours to run Posi 1, Posi 2 and Synapse o_O

The breaking point was forcing myself to finish Synapse just so I could test Shield Charge. I remember not being impressed by it back when I had a Stalker, but it was those early days with lazy slotting. Slotted as I had it Shield Charge had three damage procs that would go off with 90% chance plus good numbers (for  a leveling build).

... and it didn't even kill +1 minions, even with three damage procs at 90% and backed with BU + Gaussian + Against all Odds.

Note, this is the view point of someone soloing. Someone engaged in a team would care less about damage when their team mates are helping, and more about being nearly softcapped at level 22 making them pretty sturdy and tanky even in the low levels which is not something the common Tanker can boast of.

I was spent after that slog, but today I made the Fire/MA since it tested so well at max level. But what about leveling? Well, it takes the crown as Brunker. Claws, step aside, you're past history.

      Reveal hidden contents

I went into Posi 1 as usual at +0x6 and immediately noticed that the enemies were simply not hurting me. 25% defense to Melee/ Ranged/AoE (with amplifiers bought at level 1) explained that partly, but the real reason was how fantastic the pairing is.

Run into the pack of enemies, Storm Kick to get the defense and resistance from the Tanker proc, drop Burn, drop Dragon's Tail. Burn starts killing mobs and Dragon Tail activates the recharge proc quite reliable and puts everyone on their butts. I was surveying my recharge and it was being constantly boosted even as low as Posi 1!

The KD from Dragon's Tail was -very- felt with the time spent falling and getting up buying precious seconds. Crane Kick helped bumping the recharge and added more soft CC with more KDs.

By mission 2 I had cranked the difficulty to x8 and was mowing through enemies. No more cherry picking anything. just see bundles of XP grouped and jump in to be a dervish of destruction as it should be.

Best part? I wasn't even using inspirations. The added recharge sped up all my important CDs so I barely needed Recovery Serum and could see just a few slots more in it would have been enough to have it back up before my endurance ran out.

The damage? Stupendous. Burn cranks it up, but MA by itself is no slouch and even barely slotted the recharge gaps were minimum.

I ended up having to use some inspirations at the usual places (too many ghosts debuffing accuracy making me run and eat greens. Some Luminous debuffing acc into the negatives) but considering I had bumped it to x8? Superb handling. Also, a very rare no deaths Posi 1.

MA not having Build-up early made me a bit eeh and how will slow things down, but no, not really. To give an idea this is what I was slotted with as I brag about the damage:

    unknown.png

In summary Claws is dethroned and I'll change the OP to reflect this as well as adding a leveling build.

Haha hey man just curious, what do you mean by “bunker”? Do you feel Fire/MA is the strongest Fire tank build?
