What kind of extra damage do you do dead? Not to say I won't roll Stalkers or Scrapper or even prefer Tanks, but the more I play the more important being vertical is, ie I prefer Rad/bio versus Rad/fire or really Rad/any over Rad/fire outside of Rad/regen.

    I've covered Psionic here.

This is helpful. I know Psi insight is pretty wonky. I was just thinking Shield Charge + Mass Levitate would be a nice combo.

As mentioned, Scrapper will be more damage, but Brutes will get more out of a Res based armor. Pick which you like. There isn't really anything Scrapper specific for why Kat would be better on a Scrapper versus a Brute. Kat has the best overall cast times which is going to fuel Fury nicely. I can argue Claws is better on a Scrapper. MA is better on a Brute. Kat? Eh. My only qualm with Kat is that it is lethal damage, but my favorite melee set is (Scrapper) Claws, so...

These are all good points. MA on a Brute or Tanker is pretty sweet.

Rad Armor seems like it can be argued for either Brute or Scrapper. Elec Armor feels like it’s just flat out better on a Brute. Between Kat/Rad and Kat/Elec, which do you like?

KM: Nascar Melee.  If you can get past the sound effects ...

PsiM:  Is very unlikely to perform the way you expect it to.

    BS/SD: Yes.

Kat/Rad: Yes.  Scrapper 1/3 more damage, Brute 2.5x more peak durability.  Pick your preference.

Haha so you’re saying BS/SD would have your vote?

I don’t mind the KM sound effects. For Psi, what do you mean? I’ll most likely find it underwhelming?

Good to know for the Kat/Rad. Out of the extra damage or extra surviability, which would you value more? I.e. which would scale better for harder content?

BS/shield. Make the Kat/rad a Brute. That thing will fly with its fast cast times, +recharge, and added damage.

I thought that at first, but than I noticed the extra damage buff Meltdown gets on Scrappers. Also, I hear Katana shines on Scrappers. How do you like Katana on Brutes?

I was thinking Katana/Elec Armor could be a great Brute.

Many are wrong.  I've done km/fa, km/sd, and currently have a km/bio. The set can be tricky to learn how to get the most out of it, that's a truth, but it definitely can do good damage.

/rad armor pairs well with most anything, and it has the best T9 in the game. And don't dismiss EA. That set is straight up GOOD. It's easily top tier. I honestly feel that EA is sturdier than SD (*feel* is the key word). You're Ice Armor idea(I have zero experience with it) sounds like a good one, really. Slap -rchg and -dmg on a thing.

KM is a cool set if you like the animations and sound.  The final AV in Aeon is KM for a reason.

This was nice to hear, thanks Someguy. How do you feel KM performs on a Scrapper compared to a Stalker or Tanker?

Apparently Stalkers get that 100% crit on Burst from hide, which is nice. My thoughts are the Scrapper ATO's might pull them ahead.

  6. I have a concept in mind that involves Kinetic Melee. I know, I know... Many don't care for it and say it is lower damage. I just know the animations.

Anyways, I'm hoping to take a secondary that can shore up some of it's weaknesses. These are the ones I have in mind:

Ice Armor: Chilling Embrace has -dmg, which stacks nicely with KM. Icy Bastion is an awesome T9 and I can rotate between that and Shadow Meld.

Shield: Just seems very sturdy. AAO can boost damage, and shield charge is cool.

Rad Armor: Brings two AOE's, and Meltdown is a good T9 with an extra damage boost on Scrappers.

Dark Armor: Dark seems to have a lot of tools, and is usually pretty strong when kitted out.

Would love to hear anyone's thoughts.

I'm biased but I love my Thermal/Ice.  Solid team support, strong late-game debuffs, and ice is an offensive powerhouse that can also aid in damage mitigation with the slows it provides.  Whenever I end up on a smaller team that's struggling, I often suggest swapping to this defender as a means of getting things back on track.  Once i'm back on the scene we stop dying and everything else starts melting, or freezing in my case.

Sold!!! 😂 I did like how much that power pair seemed to bring to the table.  I’m sure there is some build here on the forums I can use as a base.

  8. Hey all,

Going to start leveling a Defender with some friends. 3-4 of us in the group. Want to invest in a Defender that is good for a smaller group like this, but will also be great for endgame content like iTrials/Aeon/ stuff like that.

I've narrowed it down to either Thermal/Ice or Elec/Elec. Between those 2, are there any suggestions?

I have an EM/EL/MU brute that im loving. keeps fury up, solid resists, self heal and aoe +end. It takes active managing but works well.

    Good advice!

I also think Kinetic Melee looks AWESOME, but I hear it is a low performing set (apparently on Scrappers at least). It might be decent on a Brute with ramping fury, or a Tanker who is using it more for Aggro.

I run TW/Electric myself, which is pretty nice.

TW is a bit on the end intensive side, and Elec feeds that very well. Elec does involve a little clickiness with its heal, causing some redraw. Nothing too bad though, especially if you manage your momentum cycles well.

Other than that I think /Elec is just generically a solid resist based set with no super synergy to speak of. Its extra end tools can fuel hungrier primaries like Stone and TW.

The +def sets @StriderIV mentioned are worth considering so you can more easily build a defense layer - TW actually falls into this category as well, though Defensive Sweep is not quite as nice to put in your attack chain as some others.

Thank you. Katana/Elec seem like they could be a cool match. I just read that Katana is way better on scrappers and Elec is way better on Brutes… so I’m torn.

    There is no "overkill".
There is only "kill" with successively greater confidence levels!

Funnily enough, my friend used your CEBR build for his brute. Since he did claws, I want to switch it up. What other primaries would your pair with an Elec Armor Brute?

  12. 9 minutes ago, Onlyasandwich said:

Damage aura is certainly a point in its favor.

On tanks, a lot of the resistance is over capped and therefore wasted.

Scrappers have lower resist caps, so also end up wasting value.

Brutes however can make better use of these values, hitting resist caps for SLE with little waste.

Didn’t even think about the overcapping on a Tanker. Great point

  13. So a friend of mine and I were talking. He knows I’m really interested in Electric Armor and suggested, if I do run it, that I should on a Brute. However, he couldn’t really give me any details as to why it pairs best with Brute 😂 so I thought I’d ask:

    - What makes Electric Armor so good on Brutes? Ability to hit resistance softcaps? Damage aura for Fury? I do like that it provides protection against endurance drain. I read on here somewhere that Elec Armor is great for iTrials.

    - What primaries pair well with it? My buddy has a Claws/Electric Brute, which seems great, but I’d want to do something different. Street Justice, Katana and Psi Melee both stood out to me, but I’d love to hear what works nicely with Electric Armor.

Funny, I’ve been thinking of this exact same combo myself. Very thematic. I feel like it can work well with either archetype. A lot of it might have to do with how much the value changes on Thermal’s powers from Defender to Corruptor. That being said…

Thermal strikes me as a true “Team” powerset that is meant to really shine in group play. In that case, I would think a Defender would be the way to go. Get the bigger value on shields/buffs/debuffs/heals.

Just my 2 cents though! I’ll leave it to the pros.

I was thinking this. I just know Ice works great with Scourge, so that might mush Corruptor's ahead. But Ice is also proc friendly, which could be great on a Defender.

As for the values, does anyone know the value changes for Thermal from Defender to Corruptor, or where I can find them? For example, I know the value for Sleet in Cold is the same for both of them, making it fit nicely on a Corruptor since you don't lose much.

  15. Howdy all!

After playing with creator, I decided I love the aesthetics of this combo. I’m just torn on whether to do it on a Corruptor or Defender!

    Defender:

Pros - Higher debuff and buff modifiers. Higher defensive modifiers, so easier to hit soft caps. Opens up the option to proc out more of Ice Blast’s attacks. Can close the damage gap a bit. Defender ATO adds an additional heal to an Ice Blast Attack.

    Corruptor:

Pros - Moarrrrr damage. Scourge works well with ice’s rains. Corruptor ATO can be split up into sets of 3 for some extra recharge. The only negative I can really think of is that Thermal doesn’t really have any CC tools to keep baddies on Ice’s rains. I’m not sure if Ice’s rains are good enough at slowing enemies for that.

The only other secondaries I’ve thought of that MIGHT replace Ice Blast are Sonic and Dark.

Please let me know your thought/suggestions!

I think all of these characters are going to be very good, so better is subjective. For a newish player determined not to repeat sets I'd probably recommend:

    • Water/Cold
    • Ice/Dark

Not that the opposite pairings are weak in any way. I do think Ice/Cold is a particular type of amazing end game character in the hands of a very experienced player. Like, that's a combo you see a lot on hand-picked, heavily IOed teams built for speed running the ITF. It's excellent, just very specific and probably needs more kitting out than certain other combos to break out of its initial okay-ness.

That is fair. I’ll probably only have the resources for one hero, so I want to go all in. Ice/Cold seems wonderful as well, the lack of a heal makes me think it won’t solo as well for tough content. BUT I could see it being the superior choice with a full team backing it up.

I'm not an expert on AV solo times by any means. One thing about Water though is that a big part of its power comes from having a heal built into the set, which for me tends to mean two things:

    • On sets that dont get their own heal (like Cold) it's obviously a big help to get one
    • On sets that do get their own heal (like Dark) it's a power you can probably skip, earning you a power "back" in some sense

I do have a Dark/Water Defender and he's very good. Never really focused on his ST damage though. Water is more of an AoE set.

One thing Ice has that Water does not is a very, very, very good Hold power that is easily worked into attack chains.

I do happen to think Water's nuke is among the best in the game, for its combo of range and burst damage, so there's that. Ice doesn't really have any burst AoE other than its cone. That another thing that leans me toward Dark/Ice, Dark has more to keep you standing upright while you wait for AoE damage to accumulate. Rightly or wrongly, I think of Ice/Cold as more of an AV slayer, albiet one that needs to find a way to stay alive in the fight.

    Very helpful, thank you.

On the Ice/Dark vs Water/Dark, would you say the Ice/Dark would be a bit more optimal since the 2 heals would be redundant? Water seems to have nice knockdown, but the slows from ice and hold (now that you mention it) could work nicely with Tar Pit.

Dark is much friendlier set for the newer player in my opinion. It's a great kit of abilities, and mostly easy to understand. Whenever I have a friend who is new to the game and they want to play support, its a set I push them toward.

In comparison Cold is a fantastic, but very specialized set. To me it's one of the most complex kits in the game. It's complicated enough that it's hard to even explain the reasons it is good. Most players on a standard playthrough probably wouldn't pick up on it being an S-Tier set valued by players at the top end of play.

Also, would you agree on the statement that Water Blast would be lacking in the single target damage for tough targets (AV’s), and that Ice will just be flat out better there?
